A fire broke out early on August 30, 2024, at the Lagos State Government Staff Quarters on Odunsanmi Street, Ogba, causing extensive damage to property. The fire, which started around 2:20 am, severely affected one of the two-bedroom flats in Block 21 of the three-story building housing 16 flats.
Extent of Damage and Cause
The blaze, which originated from an electrical surge in the children’s room of Flat 5, resulted in the destruction of the bedroom and significant loss of personal belongings. Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries reported.
Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed that the fire destroyed property worth millions of naira. He commended the quick response from emergency services, including LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Nigerian Police Force, which helped contain and extinguish the fire swiftly.
Aftermath and Precautions
In response to the incident, occupants of the affected quarters have been educated on the safe use of electrical appliances to prevent future occurrences. As of 5 am, emergency responders continued to work on securing the area and minimizing further damage.
