Nigerian filmmaker Jade Osiberu is facing public scrutiny after she criticized President Bola Tinubu, despite having previously supported him over Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential campaign.

On September 28, 2024, Osiberu shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) expressing frustration about spending her day on social media rather than being productive. This light-hearted comment led to a backlash from social media users, particularly supporters of Peter Obi, who dug up an old post from her during the election season. In that post, she had stated that while she appreciated Obi’s frugality and integrity, she did not believe he could multiply wealth, which Nigeria desperately needed.

One user, Orji, confronted her about this contradiction, labeling her a “tribal bigot” for her earlier comments. Osiberu responded, defending her stance and criticizing the online backlash as a failure of critical thinking. She emphasized that differing political opinions do not equate to bigotry and reiterated her right to critique any candidate.

Despite her attempts to clarify her views, the situation escalated, leading to further heated exchanges between her and Obi supporters. Osiberu insisted that she has previously critiqued the APC’s political ideology through her work and emphasized the importance of engaging in constructive dialogue rather than resorting to insults.
