The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has announced an increase in the fees for processing and acquiring Nigerian passports. This adjustment is part of ongoing efforts to maintain the quality and integrity of the Nigerian Standard Passport.
According to a statement released by NIS spokesman DCI Kenneth Udo on August 21, 2024, the new pricing structure will take effect from September 1, 2024. Under this revised regime, applicants will now pay ₦100,000 for the 64-page passport booklet with a 10-year validity, up from the previous ₦70,000. Additionally, the cost for the 32-page passport booklet with a 5-year validity will rise from ₦35,000 to ₦50,000.
The NIS acknowledged the potential inconvenience this increase might cause applicants but reassured the public of its commitment to transparency and quality service delivery. The fees for passport services in the Diaspora, however, remain unchanged.
This development follows recent actions by the NIS to enforce passport regulations, including an investigation into a traveler who was caught destroying a Nigerian passport at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
