The Federal Government has raised the feeding allowance for inmates in the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) by 50%. The increase, effective from August 2024, aims to alleviate the impact of rising food costs on the correctional system.

Umar Abubakar, the NCoS spokesperson, announced the adjustment during a monthly news conference hosted by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Abuja. He noted that this adjustment is just the first phase, with plans for further increases under consideration.

Abubakar dismissed a viral video that depicted poor inmate nutrition as inaccurate, asserting that it does not reflect the NCoS’s commitment to reform and rehabilitation. The Minister of Interior has ordered a thorough investigation into the video’s claims.

He highlighted significant progress in the NCoS’s reform efforts since the organization’s name change, noting that over 1,000 inmates are currently pursuing various degree programs, with 1,282 enrolled in diploma and master’s programs, and six pursuing PhDs.

Abubakar emphasized that these advancements are supported by a conducive environment provided by the NCoS, aimed at improving inmates’ education and life skills. The increase in feeding allowance is part of broader efforts to positively alter inmates’ attitudes and facilitate their reintegration into society.

Additionally, the NCoS has collaborated with the Chief Judges of Ondo and Gombe states to facilitate the release of 72 and 185 inmates, respectively
