Nigerian singer Femi Kuti has addressed the mass emigration trend, commonly known as “japa,” urging young Nigerians to stay and fight for a better future in their homeland. Speaking at the 2024 Felebration festival, Kuti emphasized his commitment to Nigeria, stating he has no plans to relocate, as he believes every country has its struggles and fights for freedom.

In his remarks, Kuti recounted conversations with people asking if he plans to “japa,” responding, “Japa to where?” He pointed out that the nations many Nigerians aspire to relocate to, like those in Europe and America, were built on the backs of civil wars and struggles. “Do you think they ran away? No, they fought,” he said, highlighting the historical context behind their development.

Kuti stressed the importance of recognizing the responsibility to improve Nigeria, asserting, “We must understand that we have to stay here and fight for a better country that we love.” He underscored the significance of the Fela Shrine in Africa, reinforcing that their cultural contributions should remain in their homeland.

He concluded by pointing out that even successful individuals, like British-Nigerian artist Made, recognize the value of being in Nigeria. “Who would take over the shrine? I want to retire,” Kuti stated, encouraging the youth to embrace their role in shaping the country’s future.
