The Governing Council of Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun State, has established an ad hoc committee to review the circumstances surrounding the expulsion of 27 students and the suspension of eight others. This decision was disclosed by Prof. Taiwo Olaiya, Chairman of the Governing Council, during the council’s inaugural meeting in Ede.

On July 27, the institution announced the expulsion and suspension due to the students’ involvement in a violent protest on May 9. The protest was sparked by the arrest of some students by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the nearby community of Owode. During the demonstration, the polytechnic’s staff club was attacked, and several vehicles were damaged.

Prof. Olaiya condemned the protest and stated that the affected students would be given another opportunity to defend themselves before the committee. He emphasized that while the right to protest is recognized, vandalism during such protests is unacceptable. The committee has been given 48 hours to complete its review and report back to the council.

Additionally, the council plans to fill all vacant principal positions, confirm pending staff promotions, complete ongoing projects, and initiate new ones for the development of the institution. The council aims to ensure a peaceful and orderly environment at the polytechnic and to uphold laws and regulations strictly. Prof. Olaiya expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for the council’s appointment and commended Dr. Sani Man Yahaya, the Rector, for maintaining peace at the institution.
