A Federal High Court in Abuja has declared the Labour Party’s national convention held on March 27, 2024, in Nnewi as valid, constitutional, and compliant with Nigerian laws. This ruling was announced by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, in a statement released on Tuesday.
Justice Emeka Nwite, in his judgment, mandated the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize and grant all privileges to the Labour Party’s National Working Committee, which is led by Barrister Julius Abure.
This court decision comes in the wake of a meeting held by party stakeholders, including the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi and the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti. During this meeting in Umuahia, they appointed an interim leadership for the party.
Senator Nanedi Usman, who leads the newly formed 29-member committee, has been given a 90-day mandate to convene congresses at the ward level, extending to the state level, which will culminate in a national convention to elect a substantive national executive leadership.
