The Federal Government has announced plans to invest $2 billion in a 90,000-kilometre fibre optic project aimed at expanding Nigeria’s fibre optic cable infrastructure from 35,000km to 125,000km. This initiative seeks to enhance the country’s terrestrial fibre optic backbone and provide improved connectivity for communities across Nigeria.
Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, made this announcement on Monday during a visit to the vandalized Digital Innovation Park in Kano. He emphasized that the investment will ensure that key sectors like education, health, and agriculture benefit from meaningful connectivity, enabling institutions such as schools, hospitals, and businesses to thrive in a digitally connected environment.
The minister also highlighted the importance of collaboration with the Kano State Government through the National Broadband Alliance, aimed at simplifying processes for private companies to invest in Kano’s digital economy. This partnership will accelerate Kano’s development as a digital hub, promoting technological growth and economic diversification across Nigeria.
