The federal government will commence the sale of subsidized rice to the general public today (Monday), according to an official from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. This initiative is aimed at alleviating the high cost of rice, which has surged to as much as N90,000 per 50kg bag in some states.
The subsidized rice was previously distributed to civil and public servants. The official, who wished to remain anonymous, explained that the initial distribution was limited to these groups due to their credentials.
To purchase the rice, individuals must present their identity card and National Identification Number. Sales points have been established at the Head of Service office, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission.
With many civil servants having already benefited, the government is now extending the sale to the broader public.
