The Federal Government of Nigeria and Plan International have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing girl child education and empowerment across the country. This collaboration is set to promote access to quality education, protect the rights of girls, and improve their health and economic empowerment.
The MoU focuses on crucial areas such as youth empowerment and leadership development, education and skill acquisition, health and well-being, protection from violence and exploitation, and promoting gender equality and inclusion.
The signing ceremony, which took place at the Federal Ministry of Youth Development in Abuja, marks a critical step towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 (quality education) and 5 (gender equality). The partnership seeks to tackle the various challenges Nigerian girls face, including limited access to education, poverty, and vulnerability to exploitation.
The event was led by the Minister of State for Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, and Plan International’s Country Director, Mr. Charles Usie. Speaking at the ceremony, Olawande emphasized the government’s commitment to empowering Nigerian youth, particularly young girls, to become self-reliant and active contributors to the country’s development.
He stated, “As we sign the agreement to work together more collaboratively starting today, our primary mission remains the same, to empower the Nigerian youth to become self-reliant, socially responsible, and active contributors to the development of our country.”
The partnership is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing girl child leadership capacity and creating opportunities for girls to participate in decision-making processes.
