The Federal Government has expressed its awareness of the severe economic challenges confronting Nigerians and is committed to mitigating these effects.

During a World Press Conference in Abuja on Thursday, Sen. George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), addressed the nation while highlighting activities to commemorate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary. The anniversary theme is “Reflecting on the Past, Inspiring the Future.”

Akume attributed the current hardships to necessary policy decisions, including the removal of fuel subsidies, which the administration deemed essential. He assured Nigerians that the government is actively working to alleviate immediate impacts and generate new opportunities through the implementation of the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’

“This government under President Bola Tinubu is fully aware of and empathetic to the economic conditions we are experiencing,” Akume stated. He emphasized that despite the challenges, continuous efforts are being made to improve the socio-economic landscape in the short, medium, and long term.

He highlighted rising food prices as a significant concern and noted that the government is learning from the situation to enhance planning and preventive measures. To address food security, the government has lifted tariffs on certain food imports and is distributing fertilizers and essential farm inputs to increase food production.

In announcing the anniversary programs, Akume mentioned events including a Special Juma’at prayer on September 27 at the National Mosque and an Inter-denominational Church Service on September 29 at the National Christian Centre.
