The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) has raised concerns that the recent flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State, may exacerbate food insecurity in Nigeria. During a media briefing on Thursday in Abuja, Federal Commissioner Alhaji Tijani Ahmed warned that the flood, which has submerged about 40 percent of the farmlands in Maiduguri just before harvest season, could worsen the food insecurity already affecting over a million people.

Ahmed expressed the Commission’s deep sadness over the catastrophic flooding, caused by the overflowing of the Alau Dam. He highlighted that the flood has displaced many individuals, resulted in missing children, and claimed lives. Additionally, vital infrastructure, including bridges, roads, and houses, has been damaged, hindering access to hospitals, schools, markets, and other essential services.

To mitigate the impact, the Commission plans to provide food, non-food items, educational materials, WASH facilities, shelter, drugs, and medical supplies to meet the emergency needs of those affected. The Commission will also offer mental health and psychosocial support to traumatized populations and assist the Borno government in utilizing the recovery shelter at Amarwa Resettlement City.

Ahmed extended his heartfelt sympathy to the Borno Government, the people, and the families of the flood victims. He also conveyed his condolences to the governments and people of Adamawa, Yobe, Gombe, Jigawa, and other neighboring states affected by this unfortunate event.
