Fernando Vega has been charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of his twin newborn daughters, Massail and Mirena, who were found dead in their Houston home on October 4, 2023. If convicted, Vega could face the death penalty, according to reports from Daily Mail UK.

Vega was initially arrested on April 19 and charged with causing serious bodily injury to a child alongside the twins’ mother, 21-year-old Angelina Belinda Calderon. However, following further investigation, his charges were upgraded to two counts of capital murder after authorities determined he was allegedly solely responsible for the infants’ deaths.

On the morning of October 4, police found the six-week-old twins unresponsive on a couch in their residence on Linden Creek Way. Upon arrival, officers observed that the infants exhibited discolored skin and bruises; one of the girls had visible fractures.

Court documents revealed that the twins had been discharged from the hospital without proper medical care and were both malnourished. Dr. Jesus Rico, a pathologist at the Harris County Institute of Forensic Science, conducted an examination and noted signs of dehydration, bruises, and fractures consistent with prior abuse. One twin also displayed evidence of acute brain bleeding and spinal cord injuries, suggesting recent trauma.

During a court hearing on Wednesday, prosecutor Edward Appelbaum stated that he intends to conduct a thorough investigation into the twins’ deaths before finalizing any murder charges. The case remains under investigation as Vega awaits trial.
