FAILURE TO PROSECUTE FAKE CABLE SELLERS THREATENS QUALITY MANUFACTURING IN NIGERIA

The Managing Director of Coleman Wires and Cables Industries Limited, Mr. George Onafowokan, has raised concerns about the failure of government agencies to prosecute individuals selling sub-standard cables, which is endangering quality cable manufacturing and leading to the proliferation of fake cables in Nigerian markets.

Onafowokan addressed these issues during a courtesy visit by the Licensed Electrical Contractor Association of Nigeria (LECAN) Lagos/South West zone to the Coleman Factory in Sagamu, Ogun State. He criticized the lack of action against the sale of adulterated cables, emphasizing that such activities occur in the markets, not in corporate offices.

He highlighted a case where a government agency seized over nine containers of sub-standard cables from a warehouse in Ajangbadi, but the cables were not destroyed and were eventually returned to the market after two years.

Onafowokan stressed the need for a collective effort to tackle the issue and urged electricians to use only standard cables, noting that the current situation is harming the industry. He also launched an anti-sub-standard electric materials campaign to address the dangers posed by fake wires to human life and property.
