Former Chelsea forward Joe Cole has recommended Matz Sels, the goalkeeper for Nottingham Forest, as the perfect replacement for Robert Sanchez at Stamford Bridge. Cole praised Sels’ performances this season, describing him as very “assured” between the sticks—a quality that Chelsea has been lacking in their goalkeeping department this year.
Sels, who joined Nottingham Forest from Strasbourg for £5 million in February 2024, has had an impressive run, keeping 11 clean sheets in 27 Premier League appearances so far, making him a strong contender for the Premier League Golden Glove. His solid performances have caught the eye of many, including Cole, who believes the Belgian goalkeeper could be a great addition to Chelsea’s squad.
Chelsea has had issues with their goalkeeping situation this season, rotating between Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen. Both have made errors that have frustrated fans and management alike. Despite Chelsea’s plans to add Mike Penders, a 19-year-old goalkeeper, to their squad in July, Cole feels that Sels’ experience would be a more immediate solution.
On the Dressing Room podcast, Cole expressed his admiration for Sels, saying:
“Do you know who I think is one of the best goalkeepers in the league at the moment? Sels from Forest. Mate, I’m telling you. Watch him play. Assured, makes saves… I don’t know whether he’s having a golden period in his time but they are out there. You’ve just got to pick the right one.”
Given Chelsea’s current goalkeeping issues, Cole’s suggestion of Sels offers an experienced and reliable option for the Blues.
