Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has identified a key defensive issue that he attributes to the team’s previous regime under Mauricio Pochettino. Maresca revealed that Chelsea players have developed a defensive “habit” from last season, which involves positioning the defensive line too high. This strategic approach has led to vulnerabilities and a significant number of goals conceded.
Speaking after a 2-1 pre-season defeat to Real Madrid, Maresca explained that he is working to correct this habit by adjusting the defensive line. Specifically, he is instructing the team to drop the line by about four to five meters to gain a defensive advantage and better manage opposing attacks.
Maresca’s comments come as Chelsea has struggled defensively in pre-season, conceding 12 goals in five matches. This defensive frailty echoes the problems of the previous season, where Chelsea scored 77 goals but conceded 63, ultimately finishing sixth in the Premier League. The poor defensive record contributed to the team missing out on a European competition spot, as Manchester United claimed the final Europa League position.
Maresca’s focus on rectifying these defensive issues is a critical part of his strategy to improve Chelsea’s performance and ensure they are more competitive in the upcoming season.
