Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has announced his administration’s readiness to collaborate with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund to revitalize the Police College in Oji River and the Police Detective College in Enugu city. This initiative aims to restore these institutions to centers of excellence and enhance the fight against crime and insecurity in the state.
During a working visit to the Government House in Enugu by the Nigeria Police Trust Fund management, led by Executive Secretary Mohammed Sheidu, along with senior police officials, Governor Mbah emphasized the importance of security as the state’s top priority. He stated, “We see security as our number one priority in the state. The reason is because we have a great ambition as to how our economy can grow, and we do not see that happening without the private sector; and naturally, the private sector is not designed to absorb security risk.”
Mbah expressed appreciation for the partnership and highlighted the alignment of objectives between his administration and the Trust Fund, particularly in enhancing police personnel’s capacity and welfare. He noted that modern crime-fighting extends beyond traditional methods, incorporating technology to improve crime prevention and response. The governor revealed that his administration has invested in state-of-the-art security infrastructure, including an AI-embedded CCTV surveillance system, to aid in tracking criminals.
In his address, Mohammed Sheidu stated that the purpose of their visit was part of a nationwide assessment of police training institutions. He emphasized the critical role that the Police College and Police Detective College have played in producing skilled police officers and the need for their restoration to former glories. Sheidu proposed a collaboration with the state government to modernize the infrastructure, enhance the curriculum, and equip these training institutions with necessary technology and tools.
Furthermore, Sheidu mentioned that the Trust Fund is collaborating with the Family Homes Fund and the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) to provide housing for police personnel and their families, as well as to engage them in agricultural activities. He stated, “These farms will not only sustain their households but also contribute to food security for both Enugu State and the country as a whole.”
Governor Mbah expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating that it aligns with his administration’s goals and commitment to enhancing security in Enugu State.
