Enugu State has honored the iconic musician Gentleman Mike Ejeagha by naming a street after him. Known as the grandfather of Igbo folk music, Ejeagha’s influence spans over six decades.

The tribute comes after Ejeagha’s 1983 hit, “Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche,” gained renewed fame when it was featured in a viral video by comedian and skit maker Brain Jotter. The Enugu State government, led by Governor Peter Mbah, inaugurated newly constructed roads on September 2, 2024, and renamed Abakpa Road to honor the 90-year-old musician, who hails from Imezi Owa, Eziagu Local Government.

During the street naming ceremony, Governor Mbah visited Ejeagha at his residence, where he was warmly received by Ejeagha’s son, Emma Ejeagha, and daughter, Elizabeth Ugwu. The governor’s visit included a lively moment where he joined in the viral ‘Gwo gwo gwo ngwo’ dance, much to the delight of local residents.

The viral resurgence of Ejeagha’s folk song has reignited interest in his work, which is celebrated for its use of folklore, proverbs, and social commentary.
