The Enugu State Police Command has completed the orderly room trial of Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph, who was implicated in the murder of Ogene musician Chikezie Nwamba.
In a statement by command spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe, it was announced that Inspector Ozonwanji was found culpable and has received the maximum penalty of dismissal, followed by prosecution in accordance with the Police Act and Regulations 2020.
Ndukwe stated, “Accordingly, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 13, which covers the Anambra and Enugu State Commands, approved the recommendations for the orderly trial, leading to the dismissal and subsequent court prosecution of the Inspector.”
As a result, Ozonwanji has been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force and was arraigned on October 28, 2024, at the Enugu East Magistrate Court on charges of murder.
The Chief Magistrate ordered the remand of the former officer in Enugu prison and directed that the case file be sent to the Attorney General of Enugu State for further judicial action. The trial has been adjourned to November 12, 2024.
