After over twenty years of participating in numerous group exhibitions both locally and internationally, Emeka Mwagbara is set to showcase his solo exhibition titled “Priceless Odyssey.” This exhibition will feature 21 paintings and 13 drawings selected from his works created between 2012 and the present.
The exhibition will open to the public on September 25, 2024, following a private viewing, and will run until October 12, 2024.
Curated by Idowu Bankole, “Priceless Odyssey” reflects Mwagbara’s artistic journey and life experiences. According to Mwagbara, the exhibition’s central theme is that the lessons learned throughout a journey are more valuable than the destination itself. “This exhibition embodies my journey into the art world. From my early days, the journey has been about growth and learning, rather than just formal education in art,” Mwagbara explained.
Despite having a background in accounting and banking, Mwagbara has always nurtured his passion for art. He rejects the term “self-taught,” citing influential mentors such as Edosa Ogiugu, Olu Ajayi, and Abiodun Olaku, who have greatly impacted his artistic development.
The exhibition at Mydrim Gallery showcases the evolution of Mwagbara’s work over the years. His art, known for its captivating brush strokes and use of color, includes pieces addressing a variety of themes including family, socio-political issues, and feminism. For instance, “A Nation and Its People 1” uses figurative representation of animals to critique the behavior of African leaders, highlighting their detachment from the issues faced by the populace.
Mwagbara’s work continues to be a favorite among galleries and collectors, celebrated for its depth and emotional resonance.
