Numerous electricity consumers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have voiced their frustrations over being transferred to Band A tariff rates, despite not receiving the promised 20 hours of power daily. Residents in Kubwa and Lugbe, among other areas, expressed their concerns, noting that they often experience less than 10 hours of electricity per day but are now being charged the higher Band A rate of ₦209.5 per kilowatt-hour.
Several consumers only became aware of the change when they recharged their meters and received fewer units than expected. Erica Ekama, a civil servant residing in Kubwa, was shocked to find that her ₦5,000 recharge yielded just 22.2 units, despite her area not receiving adequate power supply. She highlighted the injustice of the situation, particularly as some of her neighbors are still being charged the old tariff rate.
Similarly, Mathew Ojei, another Kubwa resident, questioned why he was being billed at Band A rates without receiving the corresponding level of service. He, along with other residents, urged the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to address these inconsistencies and ensure that consumers are only billed for the services they actually receive.
In Lugbe, Omolara Taiwo raised concerns about the inconsistent application of tariffs within the same compound, where some residents are on Band A while others remain on lower bands despite receiving similar levels of power supply. Consumers across these areas are calling on AEDC to rectify these issues and ensure fairness in tariff allocation.
