Nigeria’s search for a permanent head coach continues as Augustine Eguavoen, the current caretaker boss, has outlined his demands for taking the reins long-term. Following the departure of Jose Peseiro, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been actively seeking a suitable replacement.
Eguavoen, who also serves as the NFF’s technical director, stepped in to guide the team in recent weeks and is set to lead the Super Eagles against Libya in the upcoming qualifiers.
EGUAVOEN’S INTERIM STINT
The 58-year-old’s interim tenure has produced promising results, highlighted by impressive outings in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda. However, despite his relative success, Eguavoen remains cautious about committing to the permanent role.
In an interview with Brila FM, he emphasized the importance of a stable environment for his potential long-term commitment, stating,
“It will be a tough one. You have to give me a long-term contract with patience and clauses in that contract because winning is not guaranteed every week or day.”
He further added,
“You will give me time to tweak the team till I find what I want.”
As the Super Eagles look to solidify their coaching situation, Eguavoen’s candid approach to leadership highlights the complexities of managing a national team while navigating the expectations of fans and stakeholders alike.
