EGUAVOEN: NIGERIA’S PATH TO 2026 WORLD CUP RELIES ON DEFENSE AND MENTAL STRENGTH

< 1 mn read

Super Eagles interim coach Austin Eguavoen has emphasized that Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup could depend heavily on a robust defensive strategy and mental fortitude. Despite the team’s challenges in the qualifiers thus far, Eguavoen remains hopeful that Nigeria can turn their fortunes around by focusing on winning every remaining match.

Currently, the Super Eagles sit fifth in Group C, with just three points from four games, and they have yet to secure a victory in their World Cup qualifying campaign. With Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin Republic tied at the top with seven points each, Nigeria faces a significant challenge to improve their standing. However, Eguavoen believes that a disciplined mindset and a strong defense can still pave the way for Nigeria to secure a World Cup spot.

Eguavoen has reiterated that the Super Eagles must fight fiercely for every point if they wish to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. His strategy is straightforward: treat every game as a must-win, regardless of the opponent. “We have to approach every game like a cup final, and we have a big chance once we keep winning these remaining games, even if it were by 1-0,” Eguavoen told Brila FM.

The coach stressed that success is not solely about playing well but also about having the mental toughness to grind out results. “It has to be with positive thinking for Nigeria to qualify for the World Cup,” he added.

Following the conclusion of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, Nigeria will resume their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign against Rwanda in March 2025, a match that has now become crucial for their World Cup aspirations.
