The Ministry of Health in Edo State has declared a cholera outbreak, confirming six cases as of Thursday. During a news conference in Benin, Dr. Stephenson Ojeifo, Director of Public Health, disclosed that the confirmed cases were among 40 suspected cases recorded in the state.
Ojeifo explained that 23 samples, which initially tested positive in a Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT), were sent to the National Reference Laboratory in Abuja for further confirmation. Out of the 26 samples sent for testing, 15 results have been received, with six confirmed positive for cholera.
The confirmed cases were reported in three local government areas: Egor (three cases), Uhunmwonde (two cases), and Ikpoba Okha (one case). All affected patients have been treated according to cholera management protocols and have been discharged. No new cases have emerged in the communities.
In response to the outbreak, the state has activated multiple measures to address the situation. Primary Health Centres (PHCs) have been selected to manage suspected cholera cases, while severe cases are referred to teaching hospitals and the Central Hospital in Benin City.
Ojeifo advised the public to avoid self-medication and urged those experiencing symptoms such as watery stool and diarrhea to seek medical treatment immediately. He also encouraged the public to maintain good hygiene and promptly report suspected cholera cases to authorities.
