The Edo State House of Assembly has expressed strong disapproval of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun’s decision to suspend the Edo State Security Network (ESSN). This security network was established to enhance the safety of residents, particularly in rural areas, and played a significant role during the ENDSARS protests in the state.
Majority Leader Charity Aiguobarueghian emphasized that the ESSN was created in line with the Nigerian Constitution and that only a court of law has the authority to suspend or void its operations. Despite the IGP’s directive, Aiguobarueghian insisted that the ESSN would continue to protect the people of Edo State.
The IGP had ordered the suspension of the ESSN’s activities, particularly warning them to stay away from the upcoming governorship election, asserting that the responsibility for securing the election lies solely with the police. However, Aiguobarueghian reiterated that the ESSN members would only participate in the election as regular voters, not as security personnel.
The Assembly maintains that the powers to legislate on the maintenance of peace and order in the state are enshrined in the Constitution, and the ESSN’s functions are lawful and necessary for the state’s security.
