Ahead of the Edo State gubernatorial election scheduled for September 21, new allegations have emerged about the possible diversion of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) funds to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign. These claims have heightened scrutiny and debate as the election approaches.
ALLEGATIONS AND REACTIONS:
- Movement for Democracy’s Statement: Osaze Samuel, the coordinator, has condemned the alleged diversion of NDDC funds, highlighting the provision of trailer loads of rice supposedly used for campaign purposes. Samuel voiced concern that funds meant for vital development projects in the Niger Delta were being redirected to support APC’s election efforts.
- Call for Accountability: Samuel urged Edo State residents to oppose the misuse of public resources and demand accountability from their leaders. The Movement for Democracy has criticized the alleged actions as a grave misuse of funds intended for regional development.
NDDC’S REBUTTAL:
- Denial of Allegations: The NDDC, represented by its Director of Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thompson-Wakama, has denied the claims. The commission asserted that it does not sponsor political parties or candidates. Thompson-Wakama reiterated that the NDDC’s primary mandate is to advance the development of the Niger Delta region.
As the election nears, these allegations are expected to intensify discussions on transparency and accountability in the use of public funds, adding to the pre-election tensions in Edo State.
