The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has expressed grave concern over the ongoing threat posed by armed herdsmen in Nigeria, particularly following the recent killings of Ebonyi State indigenes. The organization has condemned the failure of both federal and state governments to address the escalating violence, which it describes as a manifestation of herdsmen banditry. RULAAC is particularly alarmed by the massacre, which seems to be a revenge for the killing of cows, highlighting an alarming rise in violent acts in local communities.

The civil rights group pointed out that despite ongoing peace efforts, the failure to tackle the root causes of these conflicts and bring perpetrators to justice continues to instill fear and insecurity. RULAAC also acknowledged the compassionate response of Ebonyi’s Deputy Governor, Princess Patricia Obila, who condemned the killings and called for quick action from the security agencies.

The group emphasized the importance of swift and decisive government action in addressing the threats posed by these armed groups. While it appreciated the Deputy Governor’s efforts, RULAAC reminded that prayers and fasting alone cannot replace the urgent need for a tangible security response. It called for the apprehension of the murderers within 24 hours and stressed the need for the government to prioritize the protection of its citizens, preventing future violence, and providing support and rehabilitation for the victims’ families.

The statement concluded with a call for more robust, sustained dialogue and community engagement to resolve the underlying issues fueling these conflicts, urging the government to take a stronger stance on ensuring the safety of all citizens.
