Dr. Zacch Adedeji, who took office as the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in September 2023, has made significant strides during his first year. His leadership has driven substantial advancements in Nigeria’s tax administration.

Under Adedeji’s direction, FIRS surpassed its 2023 revenue target, collecting ₦12.36 trillion, marking a considerable increase from the previous year. The agency continued this upward trend into 2024, with a 56% increase in revenue for the first quarter, reaching ₦3.94 trillion.

Adedeji has introduced a technology-driven approach to modernize FIRS. This includes a comprehensive restructuring of the agency and the integration of new modules into the TaxProMax system, which has automated much of the previous manual processes. His emphasis on improving employee welfare has also contributed to enhanced agency efficiency.

Additionally, Adedeji has taken steps to combat corruption within the tax system by establishing the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) in partnership with the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC). He has also led the National Single Window Project (NSWP), a digital initiative designed to streamline import and export activities.

Adedeji’s guiding principle of “We Tax Prosperity, Not Poverty” underscores his commitment to a fair and people-centric tax administration. As he moves into his second year, his reforms and leadership suggest a promising future for Nigeria’s tax system.
