The Chancellor of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun, Dr. David Oyedepo, has called on the Federal Government to revamp the nation’s education system to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Ota, Ogun, Oyedepo stressed the need to develop new education modules that are solution-oriented.
Oyedepo highlighted the importance of restructuring educational institutions to become centers of solutions, likening universities to engineering workshops where young people’s intellectual capacities are refined for productivity and value creation. He questioned the relevance of formal education that fails to address the country’s numerous problems, urging a shift towards more practical, problem-solving educational approaches.
He emphasized the creation of “solution centers” within universities to tackle issues such as unemployment and insecurity. These centers, Oyedepo said, should be aligned with the needs of the government, industry, and commerce.
“No nation solves its problems by running away from them; confronting them head-on is the way forward,” Oyedepo stated, encouraging the Federal Government to review and update university course content to make it more relevant to the demands of the job market and industries.
Oyedepo also advocated for a shift from a certificate-driven economy to one that prioritizes contributions, urging the government to focus on fostering indigenous solutions for sustainable growth.
