DISCUSSION ON WEIGHT GAIN AND ABORTION

A conversation recently emerged on X (formerly Twitter) regarding the potential link between sudden unexplained weight gain in women and the occurrence of abortions. This discussion raises important questions, especially considering the legal context in Nigeria, where abortion is criminalized except in cases where the mother’s life is at risk. This legal stance has led to an underground market for illegal abortions, particularly given the prevalence of premarital sex.

To explore the medical perspective on whether abortions can contribute to weight gain, we consulted Dr. Lolu, a physician with over seven years of experience currently practicing in the United States. He shared valuable insights:

“From a medical standpoint, it’s illogical to suggest that a woman would become pregnant solely for the purpose of gaining weight. Abortions are typically safer in the first trimester, a period when many women actually experience weight loss due to severe morning sickness, food aversions, and potential anemia. Women undergoing abortions in this early phase may not see any significant changes in weight, and they could even appear worse due to these symptoms.

Additionally, the stress associated with an abortion, whether it be from medication or a surgical procedure, often leads to blood loss, pain, and psychological stress, which could further contribute to weight loss rather than gain. The significant weight gain associated with pregnancy typically occurs in the late second and third trimesters, which is not relevant for women seeking to terminate early pregnancies.”

An article from Healthline supports this view, stating, “Weight gain after an abortion should not occur due to a physiological response from your body.” However, the article notes that hormonal fluctuations following an abortion can increase appetite, potentially leading some women to consume more food.

Ultimately, weight gain is often attributed to unhealthy dietary choices rather than the act of abortion itself. It is crucial to avoid stigmatizing women who experience natural weight gain due to unfounded and unscientific beliefs regarding the effects of abortion on body weight.
