Michael Anugwa, the Deputy Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), has denied rumors of his suspension from the service. This follows reports by Vanguard that the officers in charge of the Maximum and Minimum Custodial Centres in Kirikiri, Lagos, were suspended after an audio leak suggested that convicted cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, had been given an apartment outside the custodial center during his six-month jail term.
Ja’afaru Ahmed, Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), issued a statement confirming the suspension of several officers. These include Anugwa, who was reportedly suspended for his role as Deputy Controller of Corrections in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri; Sikiru Adekunle, who managed the Maximum Security Custodial Centre; and others involved in separate alleged infractions.
In response to the rumors while addressing the House of Representatives’ joint committee on financial crimes and reformatory institutions, Anugwa stated, “It was a social media report. I wasn’t served a letter,” clarifying that no official suspension had been communicated to him.
