In a significant political development, renowned musician David Adeleke, known as Davido, has publicly endorsed Asue Ighodalo, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the upcoming Edo governorship elections. Davido announced his support via Instagram Stories on September 15, 2024, sharing a newspaper cover featuring Ighodalo and declaring him as “The next governor of my mother’s homeland.”

Although Davido hails from Ede in Osun State, his mother is from Edo, adding a personal dimension to his endorsement. This move comes as the election approaches on September 21, 2024, and is expected to influence the younger, often politically disengaged demographic—a group Davido has previously mobilized effectively.

The timing of Davido’s endorsement is notable, following the arrival of his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, in Benin City. Adeleke joined a PDP rally for Ighodalo, highlighting growing support from influential political figures.

The endorsement has sparked significant discussion on social media and among political observers, potentially solidifying Ighodalo’s position as a leading candidate. Recent polls from BusinessDay and the African Polling Institute show Ighodalo ahead of his rivals, and Davido’s backing could further enhance his lead.

Ighodalo has also received endorsements from other celebrities such as Banky W, Adesua Etomi, Etinosa, Charles Inojie, and prominent figures like Dr. Aloy Chife and former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Former Governors Liyel Imoke and Donald Duke have also supported his candidacy.

While the endorsements have bolstered Ighodalo’s campaign, analysts warn that the race will be intensely competitive. The opposition is expected to mount a strong challenge, and with election day nearing, all eyes are on Edo State to see if the surge in support, particularly from youth mobilized by figures like Davido, will secure a decisive victory for the PDP.
