< 1 mn read

The crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has deepened, with the National Working Committee (NWC) suspending the party’s Acting National Chairman, Amb. Umar Damagum, and Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, for alleged anti-party activities.

Sources indicate that the decision was made during an emergency meeting held by the majority of NWC members, concluding in the early hours of Friday. The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, confirmed the suspensions in a statement issued at 3:18 a.m.

The statement outlined the NWC’s concerns, particularly regarding a letter sent by Damagum and Anyanwu to the Court of Appeal concerning the party’s stance in a case involving 27 former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who vacated their seats after defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The NWC condemned this action as a violation of the PDP Constitution and their Oath of Office.

As a result, the NWC has suspended both officials from all meetings, activities, and programs pending further investigation by the National Disciplinary Committee. The NWC cited sections 57, 58, and 59 of the PDP Constitution as the basis for the suspensions.

Additionally, the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) has urged all members to appear before the disciplinary committee if summoned. BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara called on the NWC to expedite the disciplinary process and ensure that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meets as scheduled on October 24.
