A Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by Justice Simon Amobeda, has dismissed all 44 chairmanship and councillorship candidates submitted by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the upcoming Kano local government elections. This ruling, given on an originating summons filed on October 8, 2024, directs the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) to recognize only the faction list led by Engr. Muhammad Babayo as the legitimate NNPP candidates.
The case listed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), KANSIEC, the Inspector General of Police, and the Director of the Department of Security Services (DSS) as defendants. The court order specifies that INEC is restrained from releasing the voters’ register for the election scheduled on October 26, 2024, and KANSIEC is instructed to accept the candidate list from Dalhatu Shehu Usman, the party’s recognized state chairman.
Additionally, the IGP and DSS were ordered not to provide security for the election if it proceeds on the originally planned date.
