As many countries face a low birth rate and an ageing population, some offer financial incentives to encourage marriage. Here are three countries that provide monetary benefits for getting married:
- JAPAN In Japan, newlywed couples can receive up to 600,000 yen (approximately $5,700) to help cover rent and living expenses if they live in a municipality participating in the country’s newlywed support program.
- HUNGARY Hungary offers subsidized loans of up to 10 million forints (about $33,000) to couples who marry before the bride’s 41st birthday. These loans are forgiven if the couple has three children.
- SOUTH KOREA South Korea, facing a declining marriage rate, provides financial incentives between $64,000 and $85,000 to couples who marry. If a pilot program proves successful, there are plans to extend these benefits to international residents in 2025.
