In a heartwarming display of support for education, the Class of 2000 from Obafemi Awolowo University’s Department of Management and Accounting made a remarkable contribution to their alma mater on October 29, 2024. The alumni group donated 50 new computer systems and fully refurbished the departmental library, which now features new chairs and tables, significantly enhancing the university’s digital and academic resources.

The handover ceremony took place in the department’s ICT room and was attended by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A.S. Banire, who officially commissioned the upgraded facilities. In his address, Prof. Banire commended the alumni’s generosity, stating that the improvements would benefit the entire university community. “This is a gift to the whole school,” he remarked. “It’s a resource that will broaden learning opportunities and enhance digital access for students and faculty alike.”

Representing the Class of 2000 were Mr. David Fagbowore, Class Financial Secretary, and Mr. Akintunde Akinmade, Class PRO, among other alumni members. Although Mr. Oluyemi Abaolu-Johnson, Class President, was unable to attend, he conveyed his congratulations and gratitude, expressing pride in giving back to the institution that laid the foundation for their careers.

Faculty Dean Prof. F.O. Fagbohun praised the donation as a “one-of-a-kind gift” and urged other alumni groups to consider similar contributions to address the university’s infrastructure needs. Head of Department Prof. G.O. Akinola echoed this sentiment, expressing immense gratitude to the Class of 2000. “Today is a proud day for the department,” she said, highlighting how the upgraded facilities would greatly enhance students’ digital learning and research capabilities.

The new ICT lab and e-library will provide students with access to essential digital tools, creating a more conducive learning environment that aligns with modern academic standards. The generous contribution from the Class of 2000 is expected to inspire similar efforts from other alumni, setting a high standard and leaving a lasting legacy for future students at OAU.
