CIVIL SERVANTS IN OYO STATE STRUGGLE WITH RISING TRANSPORTATION COSTS

< 1 mn read

Several federal and state civil servants in Oyo State are expressing that the increasing cost of transportation is becoming unbearable. In interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan, many civil servants reported their growing inability to cope with the financial strain.

Mr. Bobola Adegbite, a federal civil servant, stated that his situation has become critical, as he now spends N2,500 daily on transportation. He urged the government to act quickly to alleviate the hardship faced by civil servants, emphasizing that the N70,000 minimum wage does not align with the rising transportation fares.

Mrs. Adejoke Alamu, another federal worker, called on the government to review its petroleum product policies to help reduce prices. She lamented that her daily transportation cost has risen to N3,000, forcing her to stop using her car due to the exorbitant fuel costs, which would range from N8,000 to N10,000 daily.

Mr. Stephen Alade, a state government employee, criticized the hike in transport fares, noting that it has diminished his family’s standard of living as he can no longer save for household expenses. He shared that his previous weekly transport budget is now spent daily.

Alade urged governments at all levels to implement measures that would ease the burden on workers and help alleviate their concerns.
