Veteran Nigerian entertainer Charly Boy has shared insights into how living with gay and transgender individuals shaped his personal style and artistic expression. In a recent appearance on the With Chude podcast hosted by Chude Jideonwo, he reflected on his early looks and the discussions they sparked about his sexuality.

Charly Boy recounted his fashion choices from the 80s and 90s, describing how his effeminate style led to speculation about his sexual orientation. He shared, “I used to have a girly girl look… that’s where the gay speculations started.” He recalled how a friend advised him to adopt a more masculine appearance.

During his time in America, Charly Boy developed close friendships with transvestites, whom he admired for their boldness. “I wasn’t one but I just loved them; I loved how they switched, so I used to study them,” he noted.

He also mentioned his alter ego, Linda, from the Charly Boy Show, stating that his exposure to diverse identities made it easier for him to embody that character. Despite the influence of his friends, Charly Boy emphasized that he has always viewed himself as a trendsetter, preferring to create his own style rather than follow others.

“I love being myself, I love to stand out… wanting to go through another way,” he concluded, underscoring his commitment to authenticity and individuality in his artistic expression.
