In Kaduna on Tuesday, a sense of calm prevailed as youth groups chose to forgo earlier plans to protest against hardship and alleged bad governance. Instead, people were seen attending to their daily activities without fear, while youth associations and students gathered at the stadium to celebrate Independence Day.

Despite the deployment of police and other security agents to strategic locations throughout the state capital, there were no reports of unrest or disturbances during this period. The security forces primarily monitored people’s movements and vehicular traffic.

Earlier, the Coalition of Civil Society Groups, which represents both indigenes and non-indigenes in Kaduna State, publicly opposed the planned nationwide protests scheduled for October 1, 2024. Their spokesman, Comrade Yusuf Lawal, emphasized their commitment to constructive engagement rather than disruption.

Lawal stated, “October 1 should serve as a day of celebration, honoring the sacrifices and contributions of past heroes—a day to reflect on our collective journey as a State and a Nation, not one marked by the destruction of government and private property or civil unrest.” He underscored the importance of unity and respect for shared history.

Additionally, Lawal acknowledged the government’s efforts to improve the quality of life for citizens, particularly through the establishment of skill acquisition centers set to begin in December. He urged the government to ensure a transparent and equitable selection process for these programs, reflecting the community’s diverse needs and being free from nepotism or favoritism.

Overall, the day unfolded peacefully in Kaduna, with the focus shifting towards celebration and community engagement rather than protests.
