The Borno Government announced on Monday that it currently has only ₦4.4 billion of the ₦13.1 billion raised for victims of the Maiduguri flood. This update was provided by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, during a briefing at the Borno State Government Flood Disaster Situation Room.
Tar indicated that the available funds have been allocated to the newly inaugurated Disaster Relief Disbursement Committee, which comprises members from various sectors, including federal and state agencies, technocrats, traditional and religious leaders, and representatives from the military, police, NSCDC, DSS, EFCC, and ICPC.
“The governor launched cash support for the first batch of households to commence rebuilding their homes,” Tar stated. He added that victims who had received food items and cash support to last for two weeks should expect another round of assistance.
Contrary to claims that victims were forced to leave camps, Tar noted that many had chosen to return home as floodwaters receded in most areas. He mentioned plans to merge some camps, as approximately 40% of them are situated in schools. This move aims to facilitate the resumption of classes for students.
Tar also addressed the situation of victims who opted not to go to camps, stating that many were sleeping in the streets, filling stations, and private properties. The government has begun registering these individuals to provide them with support and encourage them to relocate to the camps.
He urged patience and support for the government and its partners who are working on various interventions to alleviate the suffering of the victims. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported ongoing donations from organizations, groups, and individuals to assist the one million victims affected by the September 10 flood that devastated thousands of buildings in Maiduguri.
