Chief Bode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has advised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step aside for a younger candidate in the 2027 presidential election or wait until 2031 if he wishes to contest again. George emphasized that a Southerner should hold the presidency from 2023 to 2031, in accordance with the PDP’s constitution and the realities of Nigeria’s political landscape.
In a statement on Wednesday, George highlighted that by 2027, Atiku would be 81 years old and should consider following U.S. President Joe Biden’s example by stepping down to allow the younger generation to lead. George, who himself will be in his 80s by then, questioned the wisdom of seeking public office at such an advanced age.
Referencing the recent presidential election in which Atiku lost to President Bola Tinubu, George stressed that power should not return to the North in 2027, as the PDP’s constitution mandates zoning and rotation for justice, fairness, and equity. He urged Atiku to respect these principles and allow a Southern candidate to lead the party in the next election.
George also responded to criticisms from Atiku’s media adviser, Paul Ibe, who accused him of tribalism. George refuted the claim, citing his long-standing relationships with prominent Northern figures and his history of serving the nation without bias. He reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP and its founding principles, insisting that the concept of zoning and rotation must be upheld.
Finally, George called on all PDP members to honor the party’s traditions and ensure that a Southerner leads the charge to wrest power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
