NewGlobe Advocates for Girl Child Education at International Conference

0
2 mn read

As global attention focuses on the critical issue of girl child education, NewGlobe participated in the International Conference on Girl Child Education, organized by the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF). This summit brought together key stakeholders from Nigeria and the international community for two days to discuss the challenges and opportunities surrounding girl child education.

According to data from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), approximately 20 million Nigerians—60% of out-of-school children—are girls, with over 10 million of them coming from the Northern region of the country. UNICEF reports that 7.6 million girls are currently out of school in Nigeria: 3.9 million at the primary level and 3.7 million at the junior secondary level. More than 50% of girls do not attend school at the basic education level, with 48% of out-of-school girls situated in the Northwest and Northeast. Alarmingly, about 1 million girls drop out between the first and last years of primary school, and another 600,000 transition from primary to junior secondary school. Furthermore, at least 1 in 4 girls are forced into early marriage, a statistic that escalates in the Northwest, reaching 39%.

The International Conference on Girl Child Education aimed to spotlight innovative strategies and partnerships to close the gender gap in education. NewGlobe, renowned for its transformative education programs, played a significant role in these discussions.

NewGlobe’s Impact on Education

NewGlobe, a global leader in education, has implemented widely recognized solutions that transform the landscape of basic education worldwide, including in Nigeria. Their holistic methodology incorporates learning technology platforms designed to ensure literacy and numeracy at each child’s individual learning level, rather than merely at grade level. This approach has proven to be a game changer for children of all genders and socio-economic backgrounds, resulting in significant improvements in learning outcomes.

By partnering with visionary government leaders, NewGlobe’s methodologies are currently being utilized in several states, including Lagos (EKOEXCEL), Edo (EdoBEST), Kwara (KwaraLEARN), and Bayelsa (BayelsaPRIME). A comprehensive two-year study conducted by Harvard professor and Nobel Prize winner, Prof. Michael Kremer, found that children in rural communities participating in NewGlobe programs achieve 54% more learning in school. This means that primary students in NewGlobe partner programs are nearly a full year ahead of their peers in schools employing traditional teaching methods, regardless of gender or socio-economic status.

Call to Action

Speaking at the summit, Dr. Soji Akinyele, NewGlobe Nigeria’s Group Managing Director, praised the event organizers and highlighted the pivotal role the conference could play during this watershed moment in Nigeria. He urged education decision-makers to explore scalable and viable models of foundational learning and basic education to ensure every girl child in Nigeria has access to quality education.

Dr. Akinyele stated, “Together, through innovative localized solutions and the determination of leadership, we can unlock the potential of every Nigerian girl, and in doing so, unlock the potential of our dear country, Nigeria.”

NewGlobe’s commitment to advancing girl child education reflects a broader movement toward fostering equality and opportunity in education, which is essential for Nigeria’s future development.

Yusufu Bala Usman’s The Transformation of Katsina, 1400-1883 Returns to Print

After years of being out of print, Yusufu Bala Usman’s historical masterpiece, The Transformation of Katsina, 1400-1883 (TTK), is back on the market, boasting a stunning new cover design and binding. This re-publication marks the 19th memorial anniversary of Usman’s passing on September 24, 2005.

Originally published in 1981 by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Press, the new edition has been republished by the Yusufu Bala Usman Institute (YBUI) in Zaria, 2024, after acquiring the copyright from the original publisher. This initiative aligns with the Institute’s mission to disseminate Bala’s writings to a broader audience, complementing their republishing of other critical works such as The Manipulation of Religion in Nigeria, For the Liberation of Nigeria, and Nigeria Against the IMF.

The YBUI edition features enhanced typography and layout, imagery, and color palettes. Its new front cover showcases a striking image of Kofar Guga, the historic city gate of Katsina, symbolizing centuries of significant encounters in precolonial history. As the oldest city gate and a key tollgate for merchants, Kofar Guga played vital commercial and strategic roles in the region’s history.

Additionally, the back cover design includes a brief biography of the author, a summary of the book, and a decorative image of a Tuareg camel’s hair blanket, enhancing its aesthetic appeal.

A Timeless Classic

The Transformation of Katsina has transcended time and advances in historical writing, establishing itself as a standard text in Katsina history and earning the moniker “the Bible of Katsina history.” Its influence is profound, having set a high benchmark for historiographical excellence that is difficult for subsequent works to surpass.

While numerous authors have explored the history of Katsina over the last six centuries, the groundbreaking findings of TTK have rendered further historiographical advancements relatively marginal. The book is celebrated as one of the finest examples of historical scholarship in Nigeria.

Contextualizing the Work

In this retrospective review, the focus is on the epistemological impact of TTK rather than a detailed content analysis. It is crucial to revisit the historiographical context of the book’s conception and writing. Between the 1960s and 1970s, a group of historians at the Department of History, A.B.U. Zaria, led by the late Professor Abdullahi Smith, initiated a new tradition of historical writing that contested the prevailing historiography of state formation in northern Nigeria.

The Smithian approach exposed the fallacies of a dominant racist anthropological paradigm that portrayed the histories of African precolonial states as mere movements of tribes and races devoid of agency. Colonial historiography had denied the Katsinawa their historical agency and denied them the role of active historical actors.

While Abdullahi Smith pioneered this innovative approach, it was Bala who effectively deepened it. He utilized it to counter the prevailing racist interpretations promoted by Eurocentric historians like Heinrich Barth, H.R. Palmer, R.W. Hull, and M.G. Smith, who analyzed ethnic categories like Hausa, Fulani, Habe, Kanuri, and Tuareg. Bala’s primary intellectual goal in writing TTK was to determine whether the history of Katsina was fundamentally comprised of racial and tribal movements and conflicts.

Conclusion

The return of The Transformation of Katsina to the market not only honors the legacy of Yusufu Bala Usman but also reinforces the importance of understanding and reclaiming the historical narratives of African societies. As this classic work becomes available again, it promises to enlighten a new generation of readers about the rich history and complexities of Katsina and its people.

Plateau State Local Government Elections: Mixed Reactions to Conduct and Results

On October 9th, 2024, Plateau State conducted elections across its 17 local government areas, electing Chairmen and Councillors tasked with governing at the grassroots level. The elections have sparked divided opinions regarding their conduct and results.

Since the conclusion of the elections and the swearing-in of the winners, reactions have varied widely. While some critics point to observed lapses during the process, many citizens have commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang and the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) for a more transparent and fair election compared to previous years. Supporters argue that Plateau State residents have not experienced such a positive electoral process in a long time.

This election was particularly significant, as the previous local government elections in 2021, held under the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration of former Governor Simon Lalong, were marred by controversy. During those elections, results were announced while the process was still ongoing, with the APC winning all 17 Chairmanship and 325 Councillorship seats.

In contrast, the recent elections demonstrated the competitiveness of the political landscape in Plateau State. Results released by PLASIEC indicate that the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) secured all 17 Chairmanship positions and 285 Councillorship seats. The APC, while still a significant force, managed to win only 14 Councillorship seats. Other parties also made their mark, with the Young Progressives Party (YPP) winning four seats, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) securing one, and a rerun scheduled in 21 Wards yet to be determined.

The APC has publicly rejected the results, with Party Chairman Rufus Bature criticizing PLASIEC’s handling of the elections. He expressed intentions to challenge the outcome in court, asserting that the PDP had missed an opportunity to prove its popularity ahead of the upcoming 2027 elections.

Despite the APC’s objections, citizens like John Iliya have expressed appreciation for the electoral process, specifically praising Governor Mutfwang for allowing PLASIEC to operate independently without interference. This sentiment reflects a hope for continued democratic integrity and engagement in Plateau State’s political landscape.

Initially, the all-female dance group faced challenges with the slow rhythm of the music but quickly found their groove when the upbeat K-Pop tunes filled the venue.

The previous year’s guests, the all-boys break-dance crew I O.F from Korea, left a lasting impression with their energetic performances. The Director of the Korean Cultural Centre, Kim Chan-Ki, expressed regret that budget constraints prevented their return this year but emphasized the center’s commitment to promoting Korean culture in Nigeria.

Air Peace has issued a statement assuring the public that the ongoing legal case involving its CEO, Allen Onyema, and Chief of Administration and Finance, Ejiroghene Eghagha, will not interfere with its daily operations. The airline emphasized that both executives maintain their innocence regarding the charges brought against them by the United States Department of Justice, with the case still proceeding in court.

In a statement shared on the airline’s X handle, Air Peace management reaffirmed, “While the charges have been expanded, it is essential to emphasize that both Dr. Onyema and Mrs. Eghagha remain innocent, and these are mere allegations. The case is still in court.”

The airline expressed confidence in its legal team, stating that they are actively managing the situation. “Through due process, the truth will be revealed, and our CEO and co-defendant will be exonerated,” the statement added.

Air Peace further reassured customers and the public that “these legal proceedings will not affect the safety, reliability, or the day-to-day operations of Air Peace.”

The legal troubles stem from a superseding indictment by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, which accuses Onyema and Eghagha of submitting false documents to obstruct a federal investigation. The duo has been under scrutiny since 2019 for alleged money laundering activities.

Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, has expressed grave concerns about Nigeria’s current socio-political situation, describing the nation as on the brink of failure. He urged citizens to pray for the country, noting that the struggles faced by the masses are intensifying. Secondus pointed out that the pump price of petrol has skyrocketed to N1,100, with reports of prices reaching N1,200 in some areas, further exacerbating the hardships endured by many Nigerians.

Addressing the ongoing crisis within the PDP, particularly in Rivers State, Secondus labeled the discord as unnecessary, suggesting that it could have been avoided if party members had fulfilled their roles effectively. He emphasized that there cannot be two leaders within the party, affirming that Governor Siminalaye Fubara is the rightful leader of the PDP in Rivers and deserves the respect of all members. “There are no two captains in a ship. Governor Fubara is our governor and the leader of our state,” he stated, expressing optimism that the internal issues within the party would soon be resolved.

In a veiled reference to dissenting members of the party, particularly those led by Chief Nyesom Wike, Secondus urged them to acknowledge Fubara’s leadership. He called for a reduction in tensions to foster progress in the state, stating, “I feel very pained about the state because business and investors are running away. They should tone it down.”

Secondus also advocated for judicial reforms to safeguard Nigeria’s fragile democracy, underscoring the judiciary’s critical role in government and the necessity for it to function effectively. “We all are looking for improvement and reform in the judiciary,” he concluded, emphasizing the importance of a strong judicial system in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy

The Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Dr. Emomotimi Agama, has emphasized the untapped potential of Nigeria’s capital market in addressing the country’s significant infrastructure deficit. Speaking at the “Financing the Future in Nigeria” event organized by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Milken Institute in Lagos, Dr. Agama highlighted the capital market’s ability to mobilize funds for various sectors of the economy and urged that it could similarly finance Nigeria’s infrastructure needs with increased awareness.

Dr. Agama stressed the necessity for enhanced investor education, pointing out that both regulators and market operators must collaborate to strengthen the capital market as a key platform for raising funds. He called for innovative, market-driven initiatives to encourage participation.

“We have the capacity. The potential for debt financing in Nigeria’s capital market remains largely unexplored because many people are unaware of its benefits. That is why we are making efforts to raise awareness. The capital market is the barometer of any economy,” he stated.

He further noted Nigeria’s extensive infrastructure requirements, which encompass sectors such as transportation, healthcare, education, and agriculture. Addressing these needs across the country’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory will require more than $50 billion, according to Dr. Agama.

In reference to President Bola Tinubu’s ambition for Nigeria to grow its economy to $1 trillion, Dr. Agama affirmed that this goal is attainable through the capital market, as well as sectors like mining, oil and gas, construction, and housing. He emphasized the capital market’s pivotal role in realizing these aspirations and the SEC’s commitment to facilitating this process.

During the same event, Mr. Tom Ceusters, Director of Treasury Capital Markets & Investments at IFC, underscored the importance of educating mid-level regulators and market infrastructure participants. He mentioned that the IFC has successfully trained 224 alumni from 56 countries, including 22 from Nigeria, to enhance capital market development.

Ceusters remarked on the positive impact of the IFC’s partnership with Nigeria over the past eight years, emphasizing the ongoing commitment to supporting capital market growth and development in the country

PDP Leadership Crisis: Acting National Chairman Ahmed Mohammed Accepts Role Amidst Turmoil

The ongoing leadership crisis within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues to evolve as factional Acting National Chairman Ahmed Mohammed has formally accepted his appointment in a letter to party members. Dated October 13, 2024, the letter was made public by the suspended PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba. In his correspondence, Mohammed expressed gratitude for the support received since assuming the role and emphasized the urgent need for introspection regarding the party’s management and its function as an effective opposition.

Mohammed’s letter highlights the current “domestic events” within the party, which he believes necessitate a deep reflection on how the PDP can better fulfill its role as a credible opposition in Nigeria’s political landscape. He noted that internal conflicts have hindered the party’s effectiveness, admitting, “Regrettably, we must admit that we have not satisfactorily carried out the critical role expected of a virile opposition in a democracy.”

In his message, he reaffirmed the importance of returning to the founding principles of the PDP, focusing on equity, fairness, and justice. His immediate objective is to rebuild trust among party members, facilitating the long-awaited National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting set for October 24, 2024. He also called on the North Central Zone to nominate a replacement for former National Chairman Sen. Iyorchia Ayu.

However, the PDP is grappling with additional challenges. A recent court ruling has prevented the Umar Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC) from removing Mohammed as Acting National Chairman, further complicating the party’s leadership struggles.

As the PDP navigates these tumultuous times, the party’s ability to unite and refocus on its core values will be critical for its future effectiveness as a robust opposition party in Nigeria’s democracy.

In a significant crackdown on crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism, Nigerian troops have successfully dismantled over 30 illegal refining sites and recovered more than 20,000 litres of stolen petroleum products. The operation, conducted in collaboration with the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies, is part of ongoing efforts to maintain operational momentum in the Niger Delta Region (NDR).

The troops’ recent activities led to the confiscation of 44 cooking pots and six wooden boats along the Imo River. The statement from Army headquarters detailed the locations of the recovered products, which were found around Assa, Lekuma, Abiama, Okoloma, Oha-Obu, Ikwuriator East, Southern Ukanafun 1, Oyigbo, and Obuzor Creeks. Notably, one inactive refining site was destroyed near the Bolo Onne creeks, which included an oven, two receivers, a coolant, and a long hose.

The recent operation follows a previous week where 37 illegal refining sites were dismantled, along with the interception of 12 boats, 9 vehicles, and 4 motorcycles carrying stolen products. In total, 8 suspects were apprehended, and over 230,000 litres of stolen products were recovered.

In Rivers State, troops destroyed an illegal refining site in the Abesa area of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area (LGA), recovering 9,000 litres of stolen Automotive Gas Oil (AGO). Further combing of the waterways led to the interception of a large wooden boat containing over 120,000 litres of stolen crude oil.

During an operation at the ETEO SETRACO junction in Eleme LGA, troops discovered an illegal connection point associated with a high-fenced facility identified as a criminal loading point. In this operation, two tanker trucks were intercepted while loading stolen crude, resulting in the recovery of over 40,000 litres of stolen products and the arrest of five guards.

These efforts underscore the military’s commitment to combating oil theft and ensuring the security of Nigeria’s vital oil infrastructure.

Edo State Accord Party Candidate Challenges Election Results Amid Allegations of Fraud

Dr. Bright Enabulele, the governorship candidate of the Accord Party (AP) in the recent Edo State governorship election, has announced his intention to challenge the outcome in the Election Tribunal. He alleges that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) engaged in fraudulent practices to favor the All Progressive Congress (APC) and its candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, who was declared the winner.

Enabulele claims that the election results were manipulated, citing his own experience at Ward 5, St. Saviour Ivbiyeneva Primary School unit 1 in the Ikpoba/Okha local government area, where he voted live on television but received zero votes according to the official announcement.

Speaking to journalists in Benin City after his legal team submitted a petition to the tribunal, Enabulele called for the tribunal to either declare him the winner or annul the election and conduct a fresh one, citing “fraud, intimidation, and the deliberate announcement of wrong results by INEC.”

He stated, “The case is against two parties: the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which conducted the election, and the APC candidate declared the winner. The reason for the challenge is due to non-compliance with the electoral process. My mandate was stolen, there was fraud, intimidation, and a deliberate announcement of wrong results.”

Enabulele also expressed concern over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) obtaining a court order to inspect the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BIVAS), stating that it should serve as evidence in court rather than being tampered with. He emphasized, “You cannot go to court without evidence. It is not about winning or losing; it’s about ensuring the will of the people stands. Democracy is about the will of the people.”

Phrank Shaibu, Special Assistant on Public Communication to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has criticized the Federal Government’s response to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent vacation, asserting that the government is not a travel agency. This statement comes in light of Tinubu’s announcement of a two-week vacation during his trip to France, which has sparked controversy regarding his absence amidst ongoing economic turmoil in Nigeria.

Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, defended the President’s right to enjoy his “private time,” emphasizing that Tinubu is not confined to the UK and can choose his destination during his leave. Onanuga stated, “President Tinubu is on leave for two weeks. He is not restricted to the UK. It is his private time. He can go anywhere he so desires. He is still observing his leave.”

In response, Shaibu took to his X handle to express his disapproval of Onanuga’s remarks, labeling them as insensitive given the country’s current economic challenges. He mockingly compared leadership to a Netflix subscription, suggesting it can be paused at will.

He wrote: “.@officialABAT is on vacation and can jet off to wherever his heart desires, because apparently, leadership is like a Netflix subscription – you can pause it whenever you please. While Nigerians grapple with fuel price hikes, inflation, insecurity, and a crumbling economy, we’re told not to worry because, well, it’s his private time… this Onanuga of a ‘boy’ needs help.”

Shaibu further criticized the government for demanding sacrifices from citizens while appearing to indulge in personal pleasures at the top, highlighting the disconnect between the leadership and the struggles faced by ordinary Nigerians.

The Edo Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has instructed prospective 2025 Hajj pilgrims to make an initial deposit of N8.4 million each, pending the final announcement from the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

Sheikh Ibrahim Oyarekhua, the board’s chairman, conveyed this directive during a press conference in Benin on Sunday. He explained that the early deposits are essential due to Saudi Arabia’s new policy, which mandates that payments must be completed two months prior to Arafat Day.

Oyarekhua noted that the final Hajj fare is typically announced two to three weeks before the payment period closes, emphasizing that making a deposit will help facilitate the payment process.

“The board is actively sensitizing Muslim communities about the importance of making these deposits, even if they can’t pay the full N8.4 million at once,” he said. He added that last year, all pilgrims received their visas before their departure for Saudi Arabia, thanks to the new policy.

Intending pilgrims are encouraged to deposit any amount into the board’s account to secure their spot for the pilgrimage

The leadership of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), National Assembly Chapter, has categorically denied allegations of misappropriating N3 billion in union funds.

In a statement issued over the weekend in Abuja, PASAN Chairman Comrade Sunday Sabiyyi and Secretary Comrade David Ann Ebizimoh dismissed the claims as frivolous, baseless, and defamatory. The allegations were initially made by PASAN member Yusuf Abiola, who called for audited financial statements and operational reports from the union’s executive from 2019 to the present during a press conference.

Comrade Sabiyyi assured the public that the NASS PASAN Executive Council has consistently adhered to constitutional procedures, emphasizing transparency and accountability in managing the association’s finances. He stated that all funds have been appropriately utilized for the benefit of members, with accurate records maintained.

Highlighting the implausibility of the alleged N3 billion being generated by the union, which includes contributions from its 36 State Chapters and the FCT Zone, Sabiyyi urged both PASAN members and the public to dismiss the claims as a form of blackmail aimed at distracting the union from its mandate.

He attributed the allegations to disgruntled members who lost in the previous union elections and reaffirmed the executive’s commitment to addressing members’ concerns and implementing reforms for the betterment of the association.

According to a statement from Air Commodore Olusola Akinboyewa, Director of NAF Public Relations, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is set to acquire 24 M-346 Fighter Ground Attack (FGA) jets and 10 AW-109 Trekker helicopters, adding to the two already procured.

During his visit, Air Marshal Abubakar made a strategic stop at Leonardo’s headquarters in Rome, where he engaged with top executives to enhance long-term cooperation between NAF and the company. He also inspected the first batch of six M-346 jets, noting that three were nearing completion, and reviewed key support systems to boost NAF’s operational readiness.

The meeting provided updates on delivery schedules, with the first three M-346 units expected by early 2025 and subsequent deliveries continuing until mid-2026. The additional 10 Trekker helicopters are scheduled for delivery by early 2026.

The CAS recommended the establishment of a Programme Management Office to oversee the collaboration and ensure smooth project execution, and he also called for a maintenance hub in Nigeria to support the M-346 fleet in the long term.

Leonardo showcased the M-346’s capabilities through an aerial display, highlighting its versatility in both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. The AW109 Trekker is expected to enhance combat support roles, including Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR), tactical airlift, and Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC).

These acquisitions represent a significant step in NAF’s fleet renewal efforts, aligning with Air Marshal Abubakar’s vision of transforming the force for greater agility, resilience, and operational effectiveness.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasized the importance of core family values in promoting national development, describing them as the foundation for building a strong society. He made this statement during the Muslim Family Summit held in Abuja over the weekend.

Shettima highlighted essential values such as love and mercy between spouses, harmony within the household, and the view of marriage as both a spiritual commitment and an act of worship. He also underscored the importance of kindness, the pursuit of knowledge, and the family’s pivotal role in shaping individuals and society.

Represented by Aliyu Modibbo Umar, Special Adviser to the President on General Duties, Shettima delivered a speech titled “In Defence of the Family Order.” He advocated for marriage counseling to equip couples with the necessary tools to create stable homes.

In a statement from his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima explained that marriage is more than a worldly institution; it is an act of worship. He drew from Islamic teachings, emphasizing the Quranic perspective of marriage as a source of tranquility.

“The family is not just a social unit; it is the pillar of moral and social order in society,” Shettima noted, stressing that families significantly influence the moral fabric of communities. He asserted that strengthening traditional family structures is a grassroots solution to Nigeria’s social and economic challenges.

Shettima urged adherence to Islamic principles in family life, suggesting that such teachings could effectively address many social issues facing Nigeria. “When we build the family on the wrong foundation, we risk losing everything. But when we raise it upon sound Islamic principles, it becomes a fortress that preserves the values we hold dear,” he stated.

He concluded by calling on the Muslim community to guide the current generation of couples and expressed hope for the collective wisdom shared by scholars and experts during the summit, all rooted in the Qur’an and Hadith.

The Muslim Family Summit, attended by scholars, experts, and members of the public, provided a platform for discussing best practices in family life based on Islamic teachings.

The United States and India have topped the list of countries submitting films for the upcoming Rivers International Film Festival (RIFF), which will take place in October in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Mrs. Kate Ezeigbo, the Director of RIFF, made this announcement during a press briefing, revealing that out of 2,230 films submitted from 172 countries, the U.S. and India had the most entries.

Launched in October 2023, RIFF is Rivers State’s first indigenous film festival, aiming to boost local tourism and empower filmmakers. Ezeigbo highlighted that the festival has grown significantly, with the maiden edition receiving 582 films from 82 countries, compared to this year’s 2,230 entries.

“The festival is designed to educate and empower the next generation of filmmakers,” Ezeigbo stated, pointing out that the increase in submissions shows the potential for strengthening socio-cultural relationships between Rivers State, Nigeria, and the participating countries.

RIFF has a strong focus on films addressing important social issues like gender inequality, sexuality, power dynamics, security, and racism. It encourages films that promote social justice, highlight marginalized communities, and explore diverse topics such as technology, medicine, and spirituality.

In addition to promoting creativity, RIFF is committed to the well-being of filmmakers. Ezeigbo explained that the festival has launched the RIFF Free Medicals initiative to support film practitioners, who often face health challenges due to the demanding nature of their work. The initiative provides free surgeries, routine health checks, and medication for filmmakers and critics.

Other impactful programs tied to the festival include RIFF Empowers, Pitch Your Project, Tour Rivers, and Rivers Film Projects, all aimed at enhancing the creative industry in the region.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged Nigerian leaders to effectively manage the nation’s abundant resources for sustainable development. Speaking at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Methodist Archdiocese of Abuja, Obasanjo stressed that Nigeria is richly endowed with assets such as the Rivers Niger and Benue, crude oil, and fertile land, but poor management has hindered progress.

During the event, Obasanjo echoed the message of Methodist Prelate Dr. Oliver Aba, highlighting the importance of recognizing God’s provisions. He emphasized that Nigeria, like other resource-rich nations, has been blessed with everything necessary for growth and prosperity. “Nigeria was not created to struggle,” he said, urging leaders to utilize the country’s blessings wisely.

Obasanjo also called for prayers for national healing, acknowledging that Nigeria’s challenges are not due to a lack of resources but to mismanagement. He expressed hope that with humility and divine guidance, the nation could overcome its struggles.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, commended the Methodist Church’s contributions to education, social justice, and national unity. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government and faith-based organizations to address Nigeria’s issues. Tinubu praised the Church’s role in empowering the youth and fostering dialogue among diverse communities, urging it to continue providing moral leadership.

Dr. Oliver Ali Aba, the Methodist Prelate, encouraged Nigerians to remain united in the face of challenges, noting that the country’s large population and significant global position require collective effort for progress.
