In a bid to harness the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) while safeguarding democracy, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, announced that Nigeria is implementing measures for the responsible use of this technology. He stated that the country is moving towards adopting a National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy Framework under the current administration.

Kalu emphasized that the forthcoming policy will promote the ethical use of AI to tackle significant challenges, including automating agricultural processes and enhancing healthcare delivery. He made these remarks while addressing global delegates at the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Debate, held in Geneva, Switzerland. The theme of the debate was “Harnessing Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) for a More Peaceful and Sustainable Future,” which aligns with Nigeria’s vision for an equitable and prosperous society.

“Our legislative and executive actions clearly reflect Nigeria’s commitment to harnessing STI,” Kalu stated. He highlighted the passage of the Nigeria Startup Act in 2022, which aims to create a conducive environment for technology and innovation startups. This landmark legislation establishes a legal framework that supports innovation, entrepreneurship, and digital transformation in Nigeria, emphasizing public-private partnerships, knowledge transfer, and investment incentives in emerging technologies.

Kalu continued, “Building on this momentum, under the leadership of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria is now working towards the adoption of a National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy Framework. Led by our Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, this policy will pave the way for the ethical use of AI in addressing key challenges.”

He added, “We envision a future where AI optimizes wage employment, rather than undermining it, ensuring that automation leads to job creation instead of destruction.” As digital transformation accelerates, Kalu noted that the rise of AI presents both opportunities and challenges, with AI emerging as a significant tool in various sectors across Nigeria.

DELE MOMODU: ATIKU’S 2027 PRESIDENTIAL AMBITION WILL BE DECIDED BY GOD AND DESTINY

Dele Momodu, the publisher of Ovation magazine and a key member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has stated that whether Atiku Abubakar becomes Nigeria’s president in 2027 will be determined by God and destiny. Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Momodu addressed criticisms of Abubakar’s continued political ambitions, notably from former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, who recently urged the 77-year-old to step aside due to his age.

Abubakar, who will be 81 by the next election, has run for the presidency six times, leading to speculation that he may seek the PDP ticket once again in 2027. In response to Fayose’s remarks, Momodu emphasized that no one can dictate Abubakar’s political future and questioned the apparent fear critics have of him.

Momodu dismissed concerns about age, citing examples of older leaders like U.S. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, and argued that leadership should be evaluated based on performance rather than age. He defended Abubakar’s right to run if he chooses and highlighted that a strong political coalition could make him a formidable contender in the 2027 election.

Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president and long-time politician, has been a key figure in Nigeria’s political arena for decades, consistently seeking the presidency and remaining a significant force in the PDP despite not yet securing the nation’s top office.

OBIMO COMMUNITY TAKES STEPS TO ELECT NEW IGWE AFTER 43 YEARS

After 43 years of the death of His Royal Highness Igwe Spencer Ugwuoke, the Enyiduru 1 of Obimo, the community in Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State, has resolved to elect a new Igwe. The decision was made during a town hall meeting organized by the Obimo Town Union, where representatives from the community’s four quarters—Agbor, Akutara, Akpotoro, and Ikwoka—gathered to discuss the way forward.

The President General of the Obimo Town Union, Mr. Sunday Ezike, stressed the urgency of electing a new traditional ruler, highlighting that the responsibilities of the union leader differ from those of the Igwe. He pointed out that the absence of an Igwe puts the community at a disadvantage, as chieftaincy matters and town union affairs are handled by separate government departments.

Various opinions were shared regarding the election process. Comrade Samson Ugwuoke of Agbor Quarter proposed formally notifying the Ministry of Chieftaincy Matters about the vacancy, a suggestion that received support from Hon. Malachy Onyechi, a representative in the Enugu State Assembly, and Professor Osodu Eze from Akutara Quarter.

Chief Patrick Ugwu of Akpotoro Quarter, however, cautioned against using zoning or rotational formulas for electing the new Igwe, arguing that the process should be open to all qualified candidates. He also suggested that the newly elected Igwe should draft a constitution within three months to reflect the interests of all quarters. High Chief Titus Dike from Ikwoka Quarter supported this view.

In honor of the late Igwe Spencer Ugwuoke, a moment of silence was led by Prof. Ogbonna Sam Onyeisi, a senior Enugu Government official and member of the late Igwe’s cabinet. He called for divine guidance as the community moves forward in the election process.

The meeting concluded with a resolution to officially notify the Ministry of Chieftaincy Matters about the vacant Igwe position and seek guidance on the next steps. Community members were praised for their unity and commitment to the process.

The Executive Chairman of Agatu Local Government Council in Benue State, Hon. Melvin Ejeh, has vowed to take decisive action against the perpetrators of recent attacks in parts of the local government area. Expressing his sadness over the repeated assaults by suspected herdsmen, Ejeh emphasized that those responsible would not escape justice.

In a statement he personally signed, Ejeh stated that every necessary measure would be implemented to track down the arsonists and their sponsors, ensuring they face the full consequences of the law. He warned individuals inciting crises in the region to either relocate or surrender to the authorities, asserting that a new sheriff is in town and that it would no longer be business as usual.

Ejeh extended his gratitude to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, and the Service Chiefs for their prompt response and intervention through Operation Whirl Stroke and the Nigeria Police, which helped repel the bandits and restore peace to the community.

As the Vice Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Benue State chapter, Ejeh urged the residents of Agatu to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, despite the unprovoked attacks. He assured them that security agencies would pursue the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

He revealed that clearance operations have already begun throughout the Agatu area and will be sustained to prevent the influx of bandits and herdsmen into the land. Ejeh vowed that his administration would not rest until every inch of Agatu land is recovered for the people, assuring that “no part of Agatu will be lost to the bandits.”

WORLD BANK URGES NIGERIA TO SUSTAIN REFORMS AMIDST HARDSHIP

The World Bank Vice President and Chief Economist, Mr. Indermit Gill, stated yesterday that the Federal Government should maintain ongoing reforms despite the current hardships faced by Nigerians. Speaking at the opening session of the 30th Nigeria Economic Summit (#NES30#) in Abuja, Gill commended the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the unification of exchange rates but emphasized the need for cost-effective safety nets to protect the most vulnerable populations from the harsh impacts of the reforms.

Gill acknowledged that the current administration’s reforms have resulted in significant challenges for Nigerians, particularly for the economically vulnerable. However, he asserted that these reforms are essential for steering the nation’s economy toward sustainable growth. He remarked, “If allowed, these reforms would transform the Nigerian economy and that of the entire Sub-Saharan Africa.”

He further stated, “It is very difficult to do these things, but the rewards are massive. This is the lesson from the last 40 years, as well as from countries such as Norway, Poland, and Korea.”

Gill pointed out that Nigeria’s previous reforms from 2003 to 2007 were crucial but were not sustained. He acknowledged that the current fiscal and monetary reforms are adversely affecting ordinary Nigerians, who are struggling with rising prices for food and transport.

“The government must do everything in its power to protect the most vulnerable citizens against hardships because their lives and the lives of 110 million children depend on it,” he concluded.

The Vice President, Kashim Shettima, stated yesterday that he and President Bola Tinubu empathize with Nigerians over the current hardships resulting from ongoing economic reforms. While declaring open the 30th Nigeria Economic Summit in Abuja, the VP emphasized that there is no alternative to these reforms if the economy is to return to sustainable growth.

Shettima expressed, “My heart and the heart of President Tinubu go out to most of the Nigerian people; we empathize with what the poor and the young are going through in Nigeria. But we have no option, as he (Tinubu) rightly said.”

He highlighted the volatility of Nigeria’s economy, which has been heavily reliant on oil revenues and has struggled to create enough jobs to meet the demands of the rapidly growing population. Shettima stressed the need for economic diversification, stating, “As a nation, we must prioritize sectors that can offer inclusive and sustainable growth, such as agriculture, manufacturing, and the digital economy.”

The VP pointed out the promising prospects of the digital economy, referencing insights from Pond Theory, a global finance conglomerate. He noted that while India is anticipated to have only one million supporters by 2035, Nigeria boasts a larger population of English speakers, which could be a significant advantage. He said, “We need to harness our potential so that we can transform our anticipated demographic bulge into demographic dividends, not a demographic disaster that will consume all of us.”

Shettima acknowledged the difficulty of some policy options, describing them as “inevitable” despite their unpopularity. He remarked, “Yes, some of these decisions are unpopular, but they must be taken to set the economy on the trajectory of growth.”

SME EMPOWERMENT INITIATIVES

On the empowerment of small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs), the Vice President affirmed that the government has prioritized investments in critical infrastructure, social safety nets, and innovation across various sectors. He shared, “We are making significant strides in addressing several key issues, including regulatory bottlenecks and ease of doing business challenges.”

Shettima expressed optimism about the government’s initiatives, stating, “Our objective is to ensure that the Nigerian economy is inclusive, where small and medium-sized enterprises can thrive alongside large corporations, and where every citizen, regardless of location or background, can benefit from the country.” He highlighted various programs designed to support entrepreneurs, including MSME hubs and single-digit loans for manufacturers, aimed at providing the necessary support for their success.

Kwenu 93.9FM, Lagos’s first hybrid radio station, celebrated its one-year anniversary on Saturday, highlighting its commitment to cultural integration and development across Nigeria. The station, known for its unique blend of Igbo and Pidgin content across digital and traditional platforms, has cultivated a diverse and loyal audience.

During the anniversary event at the station’s Lagos office, Managing Director and CEO Lekan Ogunbanwo shared the inspiration behind the station, emphasizing its role in promoting unity and giving the Igbo community a voice in Lagos. He pointed out that prior to Kwenu 93.9FM, there were no radio stations dedicating significant airtime to Igbo culture and business in the city.

Ogunbanwo noted, “Research shows that Igbos control about 60% of distributive trade in Nigeria, with 70% of this trade centered in Lagos. Today, there are between four and six million Igbos living in the state.” The station dedicates its morning segment from 6 am to 1 pm to the Igbo community, while broadcasting in Pidgin from 1 pm to 10 pm, promoting integration.

Emphasizing unity, Ogunbanwo stated, “This is our country, and we must focus on what unites us rather than what divides us. Promoting oneness is crucial for our progress.” The anniversary festivities included engaging meet-and-greet sessions with on-air personalities, as well as traditional prayers and the breaking of kola nuts, led by Mazi Uche Amaechi, to wish for the station’s continued success.

BALONI URGES SUCCESSOR TO PRIORITIZE INTERNALLY GENERATED REVENUE FOR SUCCESSFUL TENURE IN KADUNA NORTH

The outgoing Chairman of Kaduna North Local Government Area, Mukhtar Baloni, has emphasized the importance of improving Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for the success of his successor in office. Speaking at an end-of-tenure presentation titled “Achievements, Challenges, and Recommendations” held at the council secretariat, Baloni pointed out that IGR is critical in supplementing the shortfalls that often arise when the Federal Allocation Committee (FAC) does not provide sufficient funds for local government projects.

He expressed concern over the current revenue administration framework in Kaduna State, criticizing the dominance of the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS) in local government tax matters. According to him, the tax law allowing KADIRS to appoint both the chairperson and secretary of a local government revenue committee needs to be reviewed to give local councils more control over their tax administration.

Baloni pointed out that the arbitrary suspension of Kaduna North’s Revenue Committee earlier in the year contributed to a significant drop in revenue performance. He stressed the need for his successor to prioritize revenue generation, as it is essential for providing community services such as repairing transformers and other basic needs.

To improve efficiency, Baloni recommended holding an annual revenue summit to evaluate and make necessary changes to the local government revenue system. Reflecting on his three-year tenure, he noted that his administration managed to increase IGR, which helped support other government funds and allowed the council to carry out meaningful projects without incurring liabilities.

He also mentioned that the sale and lease of assets during his tenure were conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the Kaduna State Public Procurement Authority (KADPPA) to fund capital projects and settle contractual obligations. He advised the Ministry of Local Government to create a strong framework for leasing local government assets to ensure clear regulations moving forward.

Over 50 clerics from the Ijaw nation and beyond gathered in Oporoza town, Gbaramatu Kingdom, in Delta State’s Warri South-West Local Government Area, for a 3-day revival program aimed at breaking the stronghold of darkness and underdevelopment in the region. The revival, named the 6th Edition of Gbaramatu 2024 Prayer Day, focused on igniting the gospel of Jesus Christ across Gbaramatu’s towns and villages.

Pastor Samuel Ukuli of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, who also chairs the Gbaramatu Interdenominational Christian Fellowship, emphasized that the prayer campaign is already yielding results, stating, “The wind of the Holy Ghost is blowing already.” He noted that a spiritual transformation was underway, and the revival aimed to liberate the Gbaramatu Kingdom from ungodly practices and stagnation, thereby attracting divine blessings.

The event was supported by the local clergy and the Royal Father of Gbaramatu Kingdom, HRM Oboro Gbaraun II, Aketekpe Agadagba, who endorsed the vision and has actively participated in the planning of the annual prayer program since its inception in 2017. Pastor Felix Famutua, Publicity Secretary of the Gbaramatu Interdenominational Christian Fellowship, recounted how the prayer initiative was inspired by a similar program held in Egbema Kingdom and was embraced by the clerics of Gbaramatu.

Guest speaker, Bishop Godswyn Soroaye of Covenant Ark of Safety Inc, urged the congregation to seek true repentance and abandon ungodly practices, emphasizing that spiritual revival and fervent prayers would bring blessings and development to Gbaramatu land. He proclaimed that only the gospel of Christ could lead to internal freedom, breaking the chains of satanic influence over people’s lives.

This prayer initiative is seen as a powerful spiritual movement aimed at uplifting the kingdom and attracting progress to the community. The event, held annually on October 13, is now a significant part of Gbaramatu’s spiritual and cultural calendar.
