NORTH CENTRAL FIRM ON CONSTITUTIONAL CLAIM TO PDP NATIONAL CHAIRMAN POSITION – OLOGBONDIYAN

0
< 1 mn read

Kola Ologbondiyan, the immediate past National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has reiterated the North Central’s firm demand for constitutional adherence in the appointment of the party’s National Chairman. He emphasized that the zone remains resolute in its request to appoint a representative to complete the tenure of Senator Iyorchia Ayu, in accordance with the PDP Constitution.

In a recent meeting with PDP youth from the North Central region, Ologbondiyan urged them to persist in their quest, describing their demand as “constitutional, legitimate, and aligned with the democratic principles of equity, fair play, and justice.” He noted that the North Central’s claim is supported by various party organs and other regions, reinforcing its legitimacy under Section 47 (6) of the PDP Constitution, amended in 2017.

Ologbondiyan clarified that since the National Executive Committee (NEC) has not amended the relevant constitutional provisions, Acting National Chairman Ambassador Illyasu Umar Damagum cannot fully assume Senator Ayu’s role. “If there were any constitutional alteration, Ambassador Damagum would be the substantive National Chairman, not acting in the role,” he said, asserting that the office remains vacant and must be filled by a representative from the North Central.

He called on party leaders to uphold truth and justice, stressing that equity and fairness should take precedence over individual interests. Ologbondiyan also emphasized the PDP’s zoning arrangement, which allocates leadership positions among geopolitical zones, affirming that the North Central is entitled to the National Chairmanship.

In conclusion, Ologbondiyan urged North Central party members not to yield to pressure from “sit-tight politicians” trying to undermine the zone’s rightful claim within the party. He also stressed the importance of holding the NEC meeting scheduled for October 2024, reinforcing the North Central’s commitment to upholding its constitutional rights within the PDP.

The Lagos State Police Command has released protesters arrested during a commemoration at the Lekki Toll Gate in the early hours of Sunday. The protesters had gathered to mark the fourth anniversary of the October 20, 2020, Lekki Toll Gate shooting, where soldiers allegedly fired on peaceful EndSARS demonstrators protesting against police brutality.

The release of the protesters was confirmed by the Command’s spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who announced via his official X page that Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olanrewaju Ishola, personally oversaw the process. Hundeyin stated: “All protesters in our custody have been released. CP Olanrewaju Ishola was on the ground at the SCID to personally ensure this.”

The reason for their initial arrest remains unclear, as Hundeyin did not respond to inquiries, and attempts to reach him went unanswered.

In a video obtained by Vanguard, some of the protesters claimed they were beaten by police officers simply for assembling to honour the victims of the 2020 shooting. Hassan Taiwo Soweto, National Spokesman for the Youth Rights Campaign (YRC), also confirmed the release, noting that the Commissioner of Police facilitated it after visiting Panti Police Station. Soweto added, “We have just been released after the Commissioner of Police came to Panti police station, pleading hypocritically. The whole brutalisation, assault, and arrest occurred in his presence.

In the early hours of Sunday, suspected cultists launched a deadly attack in Edeoha community, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, leaving four people feared dead. The gunmen, believed to be members of the Iceland cult group, reportedly invaded the area around 2 a.m., armed with sophisticated weapons.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers began shooting sporadically and went door-to-door in search of their targets, ultimately killing four individuals. Three of the victims were natives of Edeoha, while the fourth hailed from Ekata, another community within the local government area, though he resided in Edeoha.

Local sources claim that the attackers came from a nearby community to carry out the killings, although the motive remains unclear, as the victims were reportedly not involved in cult activities.

Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, stating: “Yes, I can confirm the incident; it is cult-related. The Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Mustapha, has directed the Ahoada Area Commander and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) to begin an investigation into the attack, with the aim of apprehending the perpetrators and ensuring they face justice.”

NIGERIA POLICE FORCE CONDEMNS RISE IN JUNGLE JUSTICE, CALLS IT DANGEROUS AND ABHORRENT

The Nigeria Police Force has strongly denounced the recent surge in jungle justice incidents across various parts of the country, labeling it a “dangerous and abhorrent trend” that undermines the rule of law and damages Nigeria’s international reputation. The police also warned that such actions threaten the integrity of the nation’s criminal justice system.

This condemnation follows violent events in Agenebode, Edo State, and Agege, Lagos State, where angry mobs stormed police stations, dragged out suspects accused of kidnapping and organ trafficking, and killed them. In Edo State, a mob also killed a police officer, set fire to a station, and destroyed police property.

Force Public Relations Officer ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, in a statement, revealed that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has tasked the Deputy Inspector General of Police, in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), to investigate the incidents and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

“The Nigeria Police Force condemns the dangerous and deplorable trend of jungle justice that has led to the loss of lives and property. This savage behavior is a betrayal of justice and undermines the rule of law and human rights,” the statement read.

In Agenebode, the mob accused the police of shielding suspected kidnappers and armed robbers by taking them into custody. Despite police efforts to investigate, the mob overpowered the station, killed the suspects by setting them on fire, and damaged police property.

In Lagos, a police officer, ASP Augustine Osupayi, was killed by a mob on October 19, 2024, while attempting to rescue a driver accused of hitting a motorcyclist. The mob, dissatisfied with police intervention, attacked the officers and killed the ASP.

The Inspector General of Police expressed sympathy for the victims’ families and reiterated the police force’s commitment to upholding the rule of law. He urged the public to refrain from jungle justice, warning that it destabilizes the legal system and compromises public safety.

“Jungle justice is criminal, illogical, and unjustifiable,” the statement concluded.

Tragedy struck in Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday when masked gunmen launched a deadly assault during the Onwa Asaa festival, a traditional community celebration. The attackers, reportedly driving a black Lexus SUV, stormed an eatery in the area and opened fire indiscriminately, leaving several people dead. At the time of the report, at least 10 lives had been lost in the brutal attack.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with festival-goers scrambling for safety amidst the gunfire. “It felt like a war zone. The gunmen just stormed the place and started shooting everywhere. People were running for their lives, screaming and crying. It was absolute chaos,” one witness recounted.

The motive for the attack remains unclear, but concerned residents are calling on the authorities to take swift action to restore peace and ensure security in the community. “We urge the government to act immediately. We cannot continue to live in fear. We need peace and security in our community. What was supposed to be a joyful celebration has been marred by violence and bloodshed,” a local resident lamented.

When Vanguard visited the scene, a strong security presence, including police officers and other agencies, had been deployed to maintain order. The police command confirmed that investigations into the incident are underway.

The Uprising: Wives on Strike, directed by Omoni Oboli, is a captivating addition to the Wives on Strike franchise that effortlessly combines humor with a strong message of activism. As movie franchises gain momentum in Nollywood, with notable series like Wedding Party and Chief Daddy attracting varied audience interest, this latest installment piques curiosity and delivers on its promise.

The film opens with a gripping scene featuring Ebiere, played by veteran actress Hilda Dokubo, who captures the audience’s attention with her haunting thoughts while working at her meat stall in the women’s market. This initial hook sets the tone for a narrative that explores themes of empowerment and justice. Dokubo’s performance is a highlight, showcasing a compelling character arc as she transitions from a grieving mother to a figure driven by a thirst for justice.

Omoni Oboli, who also stars as Mama Ngozi, portrays a local chairman navigating the complexities of fairness and ethical dilemmas. Her character’s journey intersects with the lives of other key players, including Emeka, played by Tomiwa Wategbe, whose story brings an intriguing layer of suspense that keeps viewers engaged.

While the performances are generally entertaining, the character of Iya Bola may come off as excessive for some. Though her antics are amusing, the film’s serious themes sometimes clash with her over-the-top portrayal, distracting from the core message.

The cinematography of The Uprising is commendable, effectively utilizing color and straightforward camera angles to enhance the storytelling without overwhelming the audience with unnecessary dramatic techniques. This visual approach complements the film’s genre, providing a clean and accessible viewing experience.

Despite some debates regarding the necessity of a sequel or franchise, The Uprising: Wives on Strike stands as a testament to the idea that women can be powerful agents of change in society. The film invites viewers to draw their conclusions, encouraging them to visit cinemas and experience the narrative firsthand.

With the introduction of a voucher system for ticket purchases, audiences can easily avoid long queues, making it even more appealing for groups looking to enjoy a night out.

In conclusion, The Uprising: Wives on Strike is an easily digestible film that combines humor with a potent message, celebrating women’s resilience and their role in advocating for societal change. Don’t miss the opportunity to see this thought-provoking installment in theaters!

The event, organized in collaboration with ConnectAfrobeats, took place at the Kairus Hub in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, putting fans at the forefront of the celebration.

The new album dropped in the early hours of Friday, October 11, 2024, coinciding with the live show. Guests arrived early, eager to secure the best seats, and were issued tags and wristbands for entry. The venue was alive with neon lights, booming music, and complimentary cocktails, immersing guests in rhythmic beats predominantly from Afrobeats and 2010s hip-hop.

Ayola captivated the audience with just three tracks, including standout songs such as ‘Pass Me By,’ ‘Life I Want,’ ‘I Hope To Be Free,’ and ‘Actor n Boss.’ Each performance received enthusiastic cheers, with the crowd growing more engaged with every song.

Discussing the creative process behind the album opener, ‘Bird Sings of Money,’ a hip-hop-inspired mid-tempo track, Ayola shared his inspiration for the album’s title: “It might feel like the life I want is happy all the time, and it might also feel like ‘I don’t know.’ My relationship at the time broke, and I was the best man for my friend on his wedding day, feeling like my life is wasting away while he has his put together.”

Reflecting on the nearly three-year gap since his last project, Ayola explained, “I took a little time off because I felt I needed to discover my artistry. The reason I made this is beyond just my ability to do it. I felt like it should have a purpose, and convincing myself it did was the journey that took three years. Despite this, I was creating all along; I just wasn’t putting it out. I also went through life during those times, and I documented the feelings, which turned into what became The Life I Want album.”

In addition to the new tracks, Ayola also performed songs from his previous projects, including ‘Sare Toban’ from his debut album Conversation till Dawn and ‘Scum’ from his first project, Scum EP.

The event was graced by celebrities, including ace comedian and rapper Basketmouth, and award-winning producer Duktor Sett, among others, making it a memorable night for everyone involved.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF DEBUT ALBUMS FOR FEMALE AFROBEATS ARTISTS

0
2 mn read

Making a debut album is a decisive moment for any artist, but for female artists, the stakes are even higher due to public perception and extensive branding efforts. The challenge of creating a successful debut album can determine the trajectory of an artist’s career, especially when navigating an industry often perceived as favoring male counterparts.

While opinions vary among culture observers and music veterans about the difficulties of launching a debut album, one thing remains clear: a weak debut can hinder an artist’s career significantly. For even established hitmakers with a history of chart-topping singles, the debut album can either propel them to new heights or obstruct their progress.

Prominent figures in the industry, including Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, and Simi, have frequently highlighted the extra effort required for women to achieve the same level of recognition as men. Their experiences shed light on the complexities female artists face in a competitive landscape.

Historically, discussions about debut albums often center around male hip-hop stars and R&B icons. However, it’s crucial to celebrate and document the impactful debut masterpieces of female Afrobeats artists. These albums not only showcase exceptional talent but also leave a lasting legacy, influencing the genre and inspiring future artists.

CRITERIA FOR CELEBRATING DEBUT ALBUMS

To honor these female artists, the following criteria can be used to evaluate their debut albums:

  1. Album Quality: The overall production, songwriting, and musicality of the album.
  2. Impact: The album’s influence on the artist’s career and its effect on the music industry or society at large.
  3. Legacy: The lasting impression the album leaves on fans, critics, and subsequent generations of musicians.
  4. Commercial Success: While not the sole indicator of quality, commercial success serves as an added advantage, reflecting the album’s reception by the public.

The journey to a successful debut album is undeniably challenging for female Afrobeats artists, but those who rise to the occasion contribute significantly to the genre’s richness and diversity. Their albums serve as important milestones not only for their careers but also for the representation of women in the music industry. Celebrating these works acknowledges their artistry and the broader cultural narratives they help shape.

BOVI HAILS WOMEN’S INFLUENCE IN NIGERIAN ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY

Nigerian comedian and actor Bovi has emphasized that women have made significant strides and, in many cases, now control the industry they are fighting to equalize.

During a recent appearance on TVC’s Your View, the panel discussed the entertainment industry in Nigeria, focusing on women’s roles within it. When the topic of women’s opportunities and their fight for equality arose, Bovi asserted that women already dominate the sector.

He explained, “Women need to understand that in areas where they are fighting for equality, sometimes they may have conquered, but because they are used to fighting, they don’t know that they’ve won. You talk about the entertainment industry and how it can help women. But I observed 10 or 15 years ago that women actually control the entertainment industry. So what are we talking about?”

Bovi pointed out the substantial influence women have had in shaping the entertainment landscape over the past decade. He highlighted notable figures such as Funke Akindele, who has amassed great box office numbers every year for the past five years, and Mo Abudu, another leading producer. He noted, “The biggest box office hit is a woman, Funke Akindele. The second biggest box office hit is also a woman, Mo Abudu. They are the biggest producers. Bolanle Austin-Peters is one of the biggest producers. Jade Osibero is one of the biggest directors since Kemi Adetiba. The biggest film festival is by Chioma Ode. So what are you saying?”

Listing more influential women in the industry, including Omoni Oboli, Uche Jombo, and Genevieve Nnaji, Bovi reinforced the idea that women are at the forefront of the entertainment industry. He stated, “So when I see young girls complaining about male producers demanding sex for roles, I’m like, ‘Yes, it’s true. But who have you cried to? Who have you spoken to? You own the industry.’”

Bovi’s comments aim to empower women in the entertainment sector, reminding them of their substantial contributions and influence.

Following the tragic and sudden death of British singer and former One Direction member Liam Payne, his bandmates have begun to express their heartfelt tributes to their friend.

On October 18, 2024, Niall Horan took to Instagram to share his feelings regarding Liam’s passing, stating, “I’m absolutely devastated about the passing of my amazing friend, Liam. It just doesn’t feel real. Liam had an energy for life and a passion for work that was infectious. He was the brightest in every room and always made everyone feel happy and secure. All the laughs we had over the years, sometimes about the simplest of things, keep coming to mind through the sadness.”

Singer Zayn Malik also honored Liam with a touching post, saying, “Liam, I have found myself talking out loud to you, hoping you can hear me. I can’t help but think selfishly that there were so many more conversations for us to have in our lives. I never got to thank you for supporting me through some of the most difficult times in my life.”

He continued, “When I was missing home as a 17-year-old kid, you would always be there with a positive outlook and reassuring smile, letting me know you were my friend and that I was loved. Even though you were younger than me, you were always more sensible than me. You were headstrong, opinionated, and gave no fucks about telling people when they were wrong. Even though we butted heads because of this a few times,” he concluded.

As the tributes continue to flow in from fans and fellow artists alike, Liam’s legacy and the impact he made on those around him remain deeply felt.

NETIZENS RAISE CONCERNS OVER ELBA’S CASTING AS OKONKWO IN ‘THINGS FALL APART’

0
2 mn read

Following the announcement of a TV series adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, netizens have expressed concerns regarding Idris Elba playing the lead role of Okonkwo, emphasizing that a Nigerian actor should have been considered for the part.

In recent discussions, many highlighted the recurring issue of Western media using unoriginal African accents in their productions instead of casting African actors. Notable examples include Will Smith as Dr. Omalu in Concussion, Lashana Lynch in Woman King, and Michael B. Jordan in Black Panther.

Weeks ago, Elba revealed his involvement in the adaptation of Achebe’s acclaimed novel, in which he will portray Okonkwo. This announcement sparked a wave of criticism across social media, with many Nigerians voicing their apprehensions about the authenticity of the film. Critics argue that a foreign actor might not adequately capture the character’s cultural heritage and language.

Nollywood screenwriter Xavier Ighorodje took to Twitter to express his views, suggesting that Nigerian actors like Stan Nze or Uzor Arukwe would have been more suitable for the iconic role. He stated, “I know there’s a need to sell the product to a wider audience, but Idris Elba should not be Okonkwo in Things Fall Apart. Not when at the very least Chiwetel Ejiofor could easily play the role better as an Igbo man.” Although Ejiofor is also a British actor, he has Nigerian roots and is considered a more fitting choice due to his authentic African accent.

While the project is highly anticipated, many feel that the casting of a non-Nigerian actor for such a significant role diminishes the story’s authenticity and cultural representation. With Achebe’s work profoundly influencing the colonial narrative in Nigeria, critics argue that employing an indigenous actor would honor the source material and ensure a more genuine portrayal.

Elba’s ability to embody Okonkwo’s depth remains in question, especially compared to Pete Edochie’s iconic performance in the 1987 adaptation of the same story. Advocates for cultural authenticity stress that Nigerian actors have an innate understanding of the cultural context, which can lead to performances that resonate more deeply with audiences.

We’re 26 now. I know you didn’t even think you’d make it past 15 but you did. I know you’re probably wondering how we made it here and what we’re doing now.”

She acknowledged the ongoing struggles in the world but emphasised her growth and inner strength, “You have built up a strength and a faith that is beyond what you can comprehend. You finally told everyone…I know I know. We swore we wouldn’t. But it wasn’t good for us anymore. Please don’t be angry with me but I had to.”

Celebrating her achievements, Joann highlighted her journey into motherhood, the healing of her family, and her pursuits in music and art.

She wrote, “You’re a mother, a fucking amazing one at that, your son is so handsome and so funny and everything you’ve been daydreaming about and more, your mom is truly healing, your brother and sister are alive and well, you’ve reconnected with blood relatives, you went on to do music and art, and you were on TV.”

Recall that R. Kelly was sentenced to 20 years in prison for child sexual abuse and child pornography in February 2023, and on October 11, 2024, Joann revealed that she was also abused by him but was too scared to come forward.
