Mr. Adeyemi Sky, a 300-level Law student at the University of Abuja, has emerged as the winner of the Amnesty International and French Embassy Debate competition held for students in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This event was organized to commemorate the 2024 International Law Day and advocate for the right to education.
During the competition on Tuesday in Abuja, Ms. Barbara Magaji, Programme Manager at Amnesty International, emphasized that every child has the right to education, regardless of their location or economic circumstances.
“Today is the International Law Day; and in partnership with the French Embassy in Nigeria, we have organized this debate to promote human rights and improve legal knowledge,” Magaji stated. “The debate serves as a platform for students to engage in critical discussions, challenge the status quo, and propose actionable solutions on educational rights.”
She highlighted the importance of the event, noting that it empowers students to understand their rights and how to advocate for them. Magaji stressed that certain rights are inherent to every human being and should not be seen as privileges granted by others.
“Education is one of those fundamental rights that young people must demand,” she added. Magaji further advocated for broader access to education, insisting it should not be limited to urban areas but made available to all, regardless of location or social status.
