Nollywood actor, Femi Adebayo, has expressed worry over increasing cases of film piracy in the country.

Adebayo took to his instagram page, @femiadebayosalami, on Tuesday, to narrate his ordeal and how he recently came out victorious in his fight against piracy on one of his movies.

He noted that the dividend of the business of filmmaking had not been maximised due to the illegal activities of movie pirates.

Adebayo said: “The Nigerian film industry has experienced exponential growth over the years, but we haven’t been able to maximise the true dividends of this business because of dare devil pirates who benefit where they didn’t sow.

“This is a major reason why investors find it hard to commit their funds to filmmakers. However, through persistence and the use of the legal framework covering intellectual property, we can bring their activities to a gradual halt.

“Several times, I have been a victim of movie pirates and I never spared them. I recently concluded a legal battle with a notable media company that owns a big radio station and also engages in Youtube content distribution.

“During the cinema run of “Survival of Jelili” in 2019, my movie was gathering good numbers at that time. They decided to use my movie poster and title to promote a movie on their platform, thereby deceiving fans and diverting revenue accrued to me.

“It took 3 years, but my trust in the legal and justice system remained unwavering. With the dedication of our legal team, Bola Adebowale & Co Legal Practitioners, who are seasoned professionals with wealth of experience in handling such cases.

“They presented undeniable evidence, put up a strong argument, and took the case to trial. Their promptness, efficiency, and attention to detail played a huge part in the direction of the case. We won and were awarded a total of twenty-five five million Naira.

“This isn’t just my win as a filmmaker and content producer, but a win for all of Nollywood.”

According to him, filmmakers must be ready to fight intellectual property theft and piracy at all levels.

“Every win brings us closer to protecting and getting the true economic value of our works,” he said

The actor disclosed this during a recent interview with Pulse Nigeria while talking about his current relationship status, stating that he has been a single man since his previous relationship ended.

“I’m single. I’m waiting for Cupid to hit me. My last relationship ended because we got separated by distance but it was a peaceful breakup and we’re still friends to to this day. She left Nigeria,” he said.

When asked if he would date an older woman with a 20-year age gap he responded negatively, stressing that he wouldn’t even if she had money.

He said, “No I won’t date someone 20 years older than me because I’m a real lover. Money isn’t everything because I have money too.”

During this interview he also revealed that even though he is a film lover, becoming an actor was never in his plans and then detailed how he ended up on the big screen.

He said, “There wasn’t a definitive reason to become an actor. I never wanted to become an actor. It just happened over time. It wasn’t like my childhood dream or a teenage dream. It just happened. I always loved movies and watched a lot of films so over time my love for films just grew.”

“I did a modelling contest and I was the first runner up, so I had the option of either going to a fashion class or a film school, and as a lover of film I decided to go to a film school. Seeing what filmmaking was like, I fell totally in love,” he concluded.

Uzor Arukwe hates Nollywood filmmakers casting actors based on Instagram followers

Uzor Arukwe hates Nollywood filmmakers casting actors based on Instagram followers

The actor who plays lead in Criminal says that casting should be based on talent and not followers.

Uzor Arukwe [Instagram/Uzor.Arukwe]

Now he would spend the rest of his day doing promotional work – videos for social media, interviews with the press – for Criminal. He wore striking pink Valentino slides

In Criminal, Arukwe played an ex-convict, who leads a gang of criminals, played by Chuks Joseph, Bryan Okoye and Austin Onuoha, to hold a hospital hostage. It’s the kind of film that gets his blood pumping. He loved the character so much that during a heated debate with the cast, he insisted there was no bullying within their ranks. “Maybe I’m still thinking as the character,” he later said.

<img class="image lazyloaded imgWithMetaData aligncenter" title="Uzor Arukwe [Instagram/Uzor.Arukwe]" src="data:;base64,” alt=”Uzor Arukwe [Instagram/Uzor.Arukwe]” width=”790″ height=”987″ data-original=”https://ocdn.eu/pulscms-transforms/1/sEAktkpTURBXy9lMDdlYWM0Zjc3NDY3YjRhNjMyMzdiY2RkYTNkOTA5YS5qcGeRlQLNAxbNA9vCww” />

As a theatre-trained actor, he is one of the few A-list male performers who didn’t transition to cinema and TV from a career as a model. All he had was his talent at a time when the industry desperately needed numbers. People had begun to invest more in Nollywood and producers wanted to prove to investors they could get returns on their investments.

I remember all so clearly when I started. It was a big problem for me,” he said.

There was a time in this industry when it was mostly about Instagram and Twitter followers, and stuff like that. I didn’t understand it but knew it was something I had to be at peace with, because a production house wants to hire you and they’re looking at your numbers. ‘But can he act?’ That is the question I always ask. But there are some people who are blessed who are fantastic actors who have numbers and they’ve been doing well.

After he played Toke Makinwa’s husband in Sugar Rush (2019), the doors to the big league opened. He featured in Prophetess (2021), The Set Up 2 (2022), and A Tribe Called Judah (2023), Nollywood’s highest-grossing film of all time. “It’s been really tough. But I love the job too much,” he said.

In an industry where actors can become obscure just as quickly as they become famous, Arukwe doesn’t worry about relevance. “I don’t, to be fair. I only care about performance. I feel like if I can give value, if I can give a really good performance, people will always come to me, regardless of whatever is happening. I might not be buzzing at the time, but my time will always come. That’s how I see it,” he said.

<img class="image lazyloaded imgWithMetaData aligncenter" title="Uzor Arukwe [Instagram/Uzor.Arukwe]" src="data:;base64,” alt=”Uzor Arukwe [Instagram/Uzor.Arukwe]” width=”790″ height=”987″ data-original=”https://ocdn.eu/pulscms-transforms/1/mHMktkpTURBXy9iZDFjNGIwMTJhODdjYWQ1Yjg4ZDkxZTc0YjFjOGFlNi5qcGeRlQLNAxbNA9vCww” />

Arukwe is now 40, but he has been able to stay in the industry without any scandals, not even a social media drag, a public misstep, call out from a co-star or an ex-girlfriend.

I’m sure I’ve made some bad choices that are just not out there. I’m a very reserved guy. I try to just live my life. But if it happens tomorrow, it wouldn’t stop me,” he said.

Over the years Nollywood has grown from a tiny market churning out hundreds of low-budget content weekly, to a beast netting millions of dollars in cinema ticket sales yearly, and submitting work for the Oscars.

It’s still not there yet, but the attention on the industry from the global north has forced actors to abandon old tropes of archetypal performances and embody their characters more. Arukwe is excited about this, but he doesn’t want the industry to become infested by method acting.

I always tell people that it’s not every film that you have to use method. I don’t even think that method is a good technique for acting. But depending on the scene I might use method and use mostly listening and responding in the other scene,” he said.

It can be a narcissistic style of performance. The thing about method actors is they are not the nicest of colleagues on set. Imagine if I’m playing a brute and I come on set, it’s a very unrealistic form. Method acting takes a lot of homework. You’re absorbing this person for months.

But away from method acting, the industry, and its obsession with numbers, Criminal, and even this interview, Arukwe has bigger fish to fry. He wants to do a Hollywood film.

<img class="image lazyloaded imgWithMetaData aligncenter" title="Uzor Arukwe [Instagram/Uzor.Arukwe]" src="data:;base64,” alt=”Uzor Arukwe [Instagram/Uzor.Arukwe]” width=”790″ height=”987″ data-original=”https://ocdn.eu/pulscms-transforms/1/sEAktkpTURBXy9lMDdlYWM0Zjc3NDY3YjRhNjMyMzdiY2RkYTNkOTA5YS5qcGeRlQLNAxbNA9vCww” />

I think everybody has a dream to do something in Hollywood. That’s one of the reasons I started doing this in the first place. The next phase for me will be to do some big collaborations with Hollywood. Even if it’s not Hollywood, South Africa, or England. You know some major films, classics that will transcend time,” he said.

7 things you can do if your partner starts getting too close to their ex

When your partner starts getting too close to their ex, it can stir up a mix of emotions and concerns. Here’s an engaging approach to handling this delicate situation:

9. You disrespect yourself.

Before addressing the situation with your partner, take some time to understand your own feelings. Are you feeling jealous, insecure, or perhaps threatened? Acknowledging these emotions can help clarify what you need to discuss with your partner

Open communication is key in any relationship. Approach your partner in a non-confrontational way.

Express your feelings calmly and clearly without making accusations. For instance, you might say, “I’ve noticed you’ve been spending a lot of time with your ex recently, and it makes me feel a bit uneasy.”

Discuss what both of you consider acceptable behavior regarding ex-partners. Setting clear boundaries can prevent misunderstandings and ensure that both partners feel comfortable and respected. Remember, boundaries are not demands but agreements that respect both partners’ feelings.

Building and maintaining trust is crucial. Encourage an environment where both of you can share your feelings without fear of judgment. Trust is not just about being faithful, but also about being open and honest.

Try to understand why your partner wants to maintain a friendship with their ex. Sometimes, these relationships can be purely platonic and based on mutual respect without romantic feelings. Understanding the nature of their relationship can alleviate concerns.

Use this situation as an opportunity to assess and strengthen your relationship. Are there areas where you could improve communication or intimacy? Often, insecurities can be mitigated by reinforcing the connection between you and your partner.

If the situation is causing significant distress and you’re unable to resolve it together, it might be helpful to seek guidance from a relationship counselor. They can provide neutral advice and help you navigate complex emotions and situations.

Navigating the waters when your partner is close to their ex can be challenging, but with open communication, mutual respect, and clear boundaries, it’s possible to maintain a healthy relationship.

Remember, it’s okay to seek help if you find it overwhelming. Your feelings are valid, and addressing them directly and respectfully can lead to a stronger partnership.

DIY Recipes: How to make grilled croaker fish at home

This recipe promises delicious results.

Grilled croaker fish [BellaNaija]

Grilled croaker fish is known for its flavorful, firm flesh and its versatility in recipes. Whether enjoyed in a simple family dinner or as part of a festive gathering, this dish brings a taste of the sea right to your plate.

Here’s a detailed guide on how to make grilled Croaker fish at home, complete with tasty marinade and serving suggestions.

To serve four people, you will need:

<img class="image lazyloaded imgWithMetaData aligncenter" title="Fresh croaker fish [wwwrandatn]" src="data:;base64,” alt=”Fresh croaker fish [wwwrandatn]” width=”790″ height=”790″ data-original=”https://ocdn.eu/pulscms-transforms/1/-qMktkpTURBXy8zODRjYmMzOWIzYmI1OGNiMWUyZjBmNDNhZjJiMWIyZC5qcGeRlQLNAxbNAxbCww” />

  • 4 whole Croaker fish, cleaned and scaled
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil or vegetable oil
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon of ground pepper (black or white)
  • 1 teaspoon of paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon of thyme
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
  • Lemon wedges (for serving)
  • Grill (charcoal or electric)
  • Brush for oiling
  • Fish grilling basket (optional, but helpful)
  • Aluminium foil
  • Mixing bowl

1. Prepare the marinade: In a mixing bowl, combine olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, ground pepper, paprika, ground ginger, thyme, and salt. Mix well to create a vibrant marinade.

2. Marinate the Fish: Make shallow diagonal cuts on both sides of each fish to allow the marinade to penetrate deeply.

<img class="image lazyloaded imgWithMetaData aligncenter" title="Marinating croaker fish [Dobby'sSignature]" src="data:;base64,” alt=”Marinating croaker fish [Dobby’sSignature]” width=”790″ height=”593″ data-original=”https://ocdn.eu/pulscms-transforms/1/v05ktkpTURBXy84NTAzMWI0ZTkxMTc3NzFkMmY1ZTVjNmZjMWY2YTk5MS5qcGeRlQLNAxbNAlHCww” />

Rub the marinade generously over the fish, making sure some gets into the cuts and cavity. Cover and let marinate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours in the refrigerator for enhanced flavor.

1. Preheat the grill: If using a charcoal grill, allow it to reach a medium-high heat (about 350°F). For electric grills, preheat to the same temperature.

2. Prepare the fish for grilling: If using a fish basket, lightly oil it and place your marinated fish inside. If not using a basket, you can place the fish directly on the grill but ensure the grill is well oiled to prevent sticking.

3. Grill the fish: Place the fish on the hot grill. Grill each side for about 5-7 minutes, depending on the size of the fish.

<img class="image lazyloaded imgWithMetaData aligncenter" title="Grilling the croaker fish [Pinterest]" src="data:;base64,” alt=”Grilling the croaker fish [Pinterest]” width=”465″ height=”448″ data-original=”https://ocdn.eu/pulscms-transforms/1/7L4ktkpTURBXy85Yjc3OGNkZDUzNjdlZjEwNGUxY2I2MWIzNDc3ODZmMi5qcGeRlQLNAdHNAcDCww” />

The fish should be turned once halfway through to ensure even cooking. The fish is done when its skin is nicely charred and the flesh flakes easily with a fork.

1. Rest the fish: Let the fish rest for a few minutes after grilling. This helps the juices redistribute, keeping the fish moist.

2. Garnish and serve: Sprinkle chopped fresh parsley over the grilled fish for a fresh, herby flavour. Serve hot with lemon wedges.

<img class="image lazyloaded imgWithMetaData aligncenter" title="Croaker fish is versatile [YouTube]" src="data:;base64,” alt=”Croaker fish is versatile [YouTube]” width=”790″ height=”445″ data-original=”https://ocdn.eu/pulscms-transforms/1/RFIktkpTURBXy8yMmJkYTUxZmM1ZWM0ZmI0YzA5OTQ3M2NjNDdiOTEyOS5qcGeRlQLNAxbNAb3Cww” />

Grilled Croaker fish is versatile and pairs well with a variety of sides. You can serve with jollof rice, fried plantain, potato chips, salad or veggies.

Deafness: Causes, treatment, and management

Deafness, a condition affecting millions worldwide, can significantly impact one’s quality of life and communication abilities.

Deafness: Causes, treatment, and management [UF Health]

From congenital causes to acquired conditions, understanding the underlying factors, available treatments, and effective management strategies is crucial for individuals living with deafness and their caregivers.

Let’s delve into the multifaceted world of deafness to shed light on its causes, treatment options, and practical management approaches.

Deafness can arise from various factors, both congenital and acquired. Congenital deafness may be due to genetic abnormalities, maternal infections during pregnancy, or complications during childbirth.

Acquired deafness can result from exposure to loud noises, aging (presbycusis), infections (such as meningitis or otitis media), traumatic injuries, or certain medications (ototoxic drugs).

Understanding the specific cause of deafness is essential for determining appropriate treatment and management strategies.

Treatment options: The treatment of deafness depends on its underlying cause and severity. For individuals with conductive hearing loss caused by problems in the outer or middle ear, treatment options may include medication, surgical procedures (such as tympanoplasty or stapedectomy), or the use of hearing aids to amplify sound.

Sensorineural hearing loss, affecting the inner ear or auditory nerve, may require cochlear implants, which bypass damaged parts of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve to provide sound perception.

In cases of profound deafness or when traditional treatments are ineffective, sign language and communication therapies can help individuals adapt to their hearing loss and enhance their communication skills.

Effective management of deafness involves a comprehensive approach that addresses the physical, emotional, and social aspects of living with hearing loss.

Communication strategies, such as lip-reading, sign language, and assistive listening devices, can facilitate effective communication and social interaction.

Educating family members, friends, and caregivers about deafness and communication techniques can foster understanding and support for individuals with hearing loss.

Access to educational resources, vocational training, and support services, including counseling and advocacy groups, can empower individuals with deafness to lead fulfilling and independent lives.

Additionally, incorporating environmental modifications, such as installing visual alarms and captioning services, can enhance accessibility and safety for individuals with hearing loss in various settings.

Deafness is a complex and diverse condition that requires tailored approaches to treatment and management.

By understanding the underlying causes of deafness, exploring available treatment options, and implementing practical management strategies, individuals with hearing loss can overcome challenges and thrive in their personal and professional lives.

Embracing inclusive practices, promoting awareness and education, and fostering supportive communities are essential steps towards creating a more accessible and inclusive society for individuals with deafness.

“My idea of Christ in today’s world and how we should embrace him is probably not very traditional. But I think the Lord says ‘That’s why I brought you here.’ so I stir quite a bit of controversy everywhere I speak. I think that I am appointed for a time like this, to do it unconventionally,” he said.

“Someone was telling me about someone doing a podcast about faith and stardom and I said I’d love to do that. Why? Because of the way Christians are wired. We were wired to think that the spirit of excellence should not be in you being a distiller. They thing that a distiller of whiskey shouldn’t be called a Christian. Why? It’s a craft,” he said.

RMD emphasised that the essence of Christianity is for Christians to be able to come just as they are to the church.

He said, “People built boats in the period that Christ lived. People owned vineyards and produced all the best wines in the area at the time. If they wanted to be followers of Christ, they could. That’s the whole essence of following Christ. Come as you are.”

“People are meant to come as they are. You can’t stop people from coming to Christ the way that they are. it’s when they come that their renewal starts. So let them come and then function in the societies where they find themselves in a way that can bring people to Christ without being hypocritical. I think that’s one of the biggest problems of today’s church. It’s hypocrisy,” he concluded.

I can marry someone my parents don’t accept – Singer Nasboi

He states that his parents can only advise him, but his happiness comes first.

Nigerian skit maker and singer Nasboi

In a recent interview with Tacha on Cool FM, the singer explained why he would go ahead and marry someone even if his mother does not accept her. Starting from his family history, he stated that because of his parents’ inter-tribal marriage, they can only advise him.

Tacha probed, “Would you marry who your parents do not accept?”

“Yes, I would,” he said. “I think I’ve had this conversation before and they wanted to kill me. My mum is not a Yoruba woman. She’s from Warri and she’s a Christian. Meanwhile my dad is Yoruba and Muslim. You see it looks like something impossible right? Yet it happened.”

He continued, “So I always tell my mum that if she feels like she has trained me well enough she doesn’t have to worry about my decisions. She can only advice because at the end of the day, it is I who would live with the person I marry, not her. So if she’s giving me happiness allow me marry her. That’s how I think about it.”

He emphasised the need for open communication between parents and their children in the scenario where the parents don’t like their partners.

“I don’t think parents should be selective. They can advise, yes, they can see something they don’t like and tell me then I can find a way to straighten it out. Not that they’d say I should not marry her, because if I marry someone else who looks perfect to them, she may not be perfect for me,” said the singer.

“I’m sorry to say, but our parents would die at one point so I’m the one who’s going to continue with my happiness or sadness. So I’m of the opinion that if parents see what they don’t like in our partner, they should tell us. But selecting partners for us won’t go well,” he concluded.
