Budget Travel Tips: How to Explore the World Without Breaking the Bank

Budget Travel Tips - How to Explore the World Without Breaking the Bank
Every Nigerian state has breathtaking sights such as Yankari Games Reserve, Obudu Mountain Resort, Ibom Icon Golf Resort, and so much more. But like Oliver Twist, we always want to see more. Though the world is blessed with many beautiful locations for exploration, traveling to countries that have those localities can be very expensive.

However, whether you’re a Nigerian who earns about a medium or high thousand naira per month, it doesn’t matter. You don’t have to plan the Central Bank heist to take a vacation to those dream destinations on your travel wish list. There are tips to help you mark them off.

Continue reading to discover 10 great budget tips for traveling the world seamlessly on a budget without breaking the bank.

We are your guide. Catch up with these ten tips!

1. Draft a flexible travel itinerary and its realistic funding

You can always go right with proper planning and preparation. Before setting off on your world tour, draft a flexible travel itinerary that discloses the time you intend to spend in a particular destination. Knowing this time frame activates budget-consciousness. This is also crucial since realistic funding ensures your financial security.

2. Research your dream destinations

Conduct this considering factors such as natural beauty locations, high-security statistics, cultural significance, and most importantly, AFFORDABILITY. While the possibility of traveling the world is likely, some countries cost more than others.

3. Book economical transportation

Many first-time travelers have revealed that their first trip was made with cars, buses, and trains. Currently, a travel sensation, Pelumi Nubi, went on a solo road trip from London to Lagos by car. You can use these means if you wish, but a plane is an alternative. Book flight tickets months before your departure time to get discount prices that save you money.

4. Hack your accommodation

Determining where and an amount to find a comfortable short-lease accommodation has been made easier with the Internet. Look up an affordable but secure guest hotel if you love a private space and a hostel if you are keen on sharing spaces.

5. Pack for ease

One sure way to avoid being heavily charged at the airport luggage claim is to pack for ease. To do this, pack clothes and fabrics conducive to the weather of your visiting destination. Another bonus to packing easily is that you will feel more motivated to explore shopping in this new locality.

6. Follow travel content creators online

The Nigerian content-making stage had tremendous talents and has shone a spotlight on these Creators who educate and update Nigerians with their insightful travel tours and tips. Alma Asinobi has gained recognition on social media for her travel videos, budget tips, and awe-inspiring partnerships with travel brands. Keep up with her on X and Instagram.

Travelletters, a Substack newsletter with 9,000 subscribers, was launched by its owner, Munachisomsoo, in September 2022 to share tips on visas, destinations, flights, and everything travel. She tweets here. On YouTube, Taylor Aina’s channel enjoys a solid media presence for its travel content, featuring interviews and showcasing diverse cultural history and significance.

7. Go with friends

“All hands on deck” is an effective technique to cut costs when planning your next destination. Going with trusted friends also offers emotional support if you dread navigating new destinations alone. It’s even become a common hack to tell strangers you meet in new localities that you’re in the company of friends and never by yourself. And if you have trouble making friends, traveling with friends keeps the boredom away.

8. Embrace the newness

Knowing and accepting the entirety of your new destination can be a lot to take in at first. Try to bond with locals by visiting major marketplaces, buying from their sellers, and engaging in chit-chat with them. Also, attending festivals held during the time you visit works too, as this immerses you in their culture and history.

9. Put your cooking skills to personal use

Fine dining is tempting but luxurious. To save a useful percentage of money when in your new destination, cook familiar meals that your taste buds will thank you for. Trying new cuisines peculiar to the location is commendable. You can find guide manuals for this by searching for cookbooks online or asking local chefs for traditional recipes.

10. Be open to public transportation

Everyone knows public transportation offers cheap prices, but sometimes it is uncomfortable and slow. Think less of its disadvantages and be open to various means of public transportation. A research study revealed that students of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, reduce their carbon footprint when they take buses and trains more because it decreases the daily number of cars on roads, harming the green environment with black smoke.

How To Get Travel Visas As A Nigerian

As a Nigerian, obtaining a travel visa requires meticulous preparation and adherence to certain regulations. Find the embassy or consulate of the intended country in Nigeria and familiarize yourself with their visa application procedure before proceeding. Assemble the required paperwork, including financial statements, a valid passport, an application for a visa, a travel schedule, and evidence of lodging. Additional documents, such as an invitation letter or evidence of family ties to Nigeria, can be needed by other nations. Make sure that every document is current and accurate. If necessary, make an appointment and show up for any interviews. Anticipate possible delays and inquire about the progress of your application.

The Bottom Line

Exploring the world on a budget is not only doable but amazing. By drafting a flexible travel itinerary and realistically funding it, researching dream destinations, booking economical transportation, sorting your accommodation, following travel creators online, and going with friends, you will create memorable experiences without breaking the bank.

How to Travel on a Budget

How to Travel on a Budget
Traveling happens to be one of life’s most admirable adventures. It comes with so much expectation, spiritedness, and a sense of exploration. All these factors spin the wheel of expenses for the traveler into a pricey or budget-friendly trip.

Definitely, you would wish for a budget-friendly trip. No one wants to return from the ultimate adventure without a penny left in his pocket, so here are reliable ways to travel while saving your finances from crumbling.

Reliable Insights on How to Travel on a Budget

1. Get Your Destination Right

Moving into a new apartment requires lots of information, but traveling on a budget does the same. You don’t want to go to a city you know nothing about, no matter how popular.

By getting your destination right, you know exactly where you’re headed and the purpose of your chosen location, and you will begin to determine the most suitable ways to spend the trip.

2. Start Making Travel Plans Early

Don’t wait until a month or a few weeks before your travel date to make plans. You should be aware of important features of your travel, like hotel reservations, tour guides, plane tickets, the cost of cuisine, and fun activities, amongst others.

Also, aim to book ahead, especially for your plane tickets and hotel reservations. Companies can hike their prices due to the change in seasons. You should also get your documents ready during this period.

Planning ahead doesn’t require thorough strictness. You don’t want to see a strange, outrageous price that can alter your travel ego. To avoid such dampening, keep planning ahead as a crux of how to travel on a budget.

3. Lookout for Special Offers and Discounts

Some flight companies offer a cheaper price rate to customers who book months or weeks before their travel dates. Students and senior citizens can also get special offers at restaurants, movie theaters, bars, malls, and other regular places.

These statuses are highly advantageous to serious business lines as they help improve the ratings of such brands on social media and in the general market.

In turn, if you fall into the category of studentship or being a senior, there’s some cash staying back in your pocket. Special Offers and discounts are great insights on how to travel on a budget.

4. Make a Luggage List

To embark on a budget-friendly trip, make a luggage list for yourself and show it to a friend or relative who is honest. This will help you remove any unimportant items and include the vital ones.

Spending extra costs on toothbrushes and hand cream may seem small, but these little holes can sink the ship. Stay organized. This is often overlooked, but it’s a criterion for traveling on a budget.

Also, considering the cost of extra luggage on the plane and the choice of transportation through the city, you may want to take this point more seriously.

5. Choose Public Transport Networks

Most developed cities have transport networks that are available at the subway, train station, bus stops, and even on apps. The main deal is visiting as many places as you would like. Since you’re thinking about how to travel on a budget, think “public” to get you that freedom.

Another beautiful thing about public transportation is that you could have a conversation with someone who may be willing to show you around the city, get you the best meals, and give you a creative tour without a penny. Jackpot!

6. Make Conversions to Transact Easily

You most likely turned into a mathematician while preparing for your trip. Bravo! Those skills will pay off now. Get to a bank and make your conversions. You can now see what planning ahead does for you.

Transactions happen daily, and there shouldn’t be any stumbling block to that. You need to buy food and newspapers and move around like a curious rabbit. Those extra conversion fees could add up!

7. Prefer Local Cuisines

Dining like a royal in a foreign land may look really pretty. Know how to travel on a budget by trying the local foods when you travel. Local foods are more cost-effective than anything else.

While at your meals, you could even learn about the procedures for making the food and other ways to eat it. This could definitely be one of the highlights of your trip.

8. Purchase a Local SIM Card

Staying in touch with your new friends and family back home should be the least of your worries. Ask for a reliable network provider and buy a local SIM card from them.

Don’t crash your budget on overpriced foreign services when there’s how to travel on a budget with seamless communication. Using cheaply offered data and voice packages in the local networks should be cherished.

9. Think Travel Insurance

If you desire to travel regularly, you may need travel insurance. It assures you of coverage for unforeseen emergencies during your trip.

Travel Insurance is an investment in the future of your travel that helps cover the extra cost of unplanned damages. It covers medical emergencies, lost baggage, canceled flights, evacuations, etc.

It is prudent to consider travel insurance while finding out how to travel on a budget because of its redeeming features. You may not see a danger coming, but travel insurance handles the cost of such before it arrives.

The Bottom Line

Maybe you’ve made several travel plans in the past and canceled them because of your finances. You may be looking for the courage to start up a new plan for traveling on a budget.

This article proffers reliable solutions that could make your dream trip a reality. Remember the popular saying, “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”.

How to Plan the Ultimate Road Trip Adventure

How to Plan the Ultimate Road Trip Adventure
You need to be all set because it might just be time to plan your exceptional road trip adventure! Road trips make it much easier to discover new destinations, bond differently with friends and family, and imprint memories that can’t be forgotten in the sand of time.

Whether as a regular road traveler or a first-timer, successfully planning a road trip adventure can be exciting and overwhelming. But hey, you don’t have to get worried—I’ve got all it takes to make this easier for you! I’m going to walk you through the process of planning the ultimate road trip adventure.

Road trips can be so much fun and entertaining, but they require a lot of strategic planning to make them memorable and without regrets.

Continue reading to find the best way to plan your ultimate road trip with a step-by-step guide. I’ll cover everything from choosing the route to follow and the destinations you can take to preparing for emergencies on the road. I’ll also share the best tips for keeping the kids entertained, eating well, and staying safe.

1. Determine the Duration of Your Trip

One of the first things that’s necessary to know when planning is how long you’ll be on the trip. Being sure of the duration, whether for days or months, is crucial in your planning to avoid being stranded on a road trip that was initially meant to be an adventure.

2. Prep Your Car

On your road trip, you’ll want to create amazing memories and have zero car troubles. Then, to achieve that, you have to make sure your car is up and ready for the task ahead. You might not be able to figure this out by just looking at the car alone.

You need to be observant, and if your vehicle has been showing you any signs of a problem, be sure that you have plenty of time left before your date of departure for due repairs. After all, what’s an ultimate road trip without a vehicle in good condition?

Even though no issues have been noticed with your vehicle yet, it still needs to be inspected. You have to get your tires checked to be sure they can cover the distance you’re going for, top off your fluids, change the oil in your car if it’s due for a change, check your lights, wiper blades, and brakes, and then finally have your car inspected by a professional and appropriately repaired.

3. Plan Your Budget

You can’t go on a road trip without planning your budget. That’ll be too risky, except you have some money to fall back on. But then, no matter how terrible you are at budgeting or mapping out the cost of a trip, you really have to try.

The truth might be difficult to tell, but most people need to work on budgeting road trips in a very detailed way. With costs skyrocketing, planning your budget can never go out of style. Planning is a necessity that can’t be overlooked.

4. Choose the Right Destination

This is an important step in planning an amazing road trip. When making the decision of the right destination, you have to take into serious consideration your interests, preferences, and the available time you have for the road trip adventure.

You can’t make a choice when you don’t have different destinations in mind, right? This is where browsing travel guides or even consulting your friends or family will be of much help.

Once you’ve figured out the destination, you can run a quick search on the destination(s) of your choice. Maps can also help you check out the different routes to get there and back.

Depending on preference, local attractions or hidden gems could also be part of the places you might love to visit.

If you’ll be traveling with your pet, you might have to consider your pet by going to places you can spend time outdoors together, such as parks, beaches, etc.

5. Choose Overnight Stops

As unimportant as this might seem, it’s very important, except you plan to be on the road round the clock. You need to choose these stops ahead of time, where you can easily camp or even stay in a hotel.

I guess you wouldn’t love to be in a situation where you hit a deserted area and need to get off the road with no anchor point in mind. The anchor stops might be benchmarks that could serve as lodging options, restaurants, or a place for any recreational activity of our choice.

6. Fuel Stops and Vehicle checks

This is really important when planning your ultimate road trip adventure. Running out of gas or fuel is a common road trip issue that most travelers face. Before leaving home, you must list the areas along your travel route that have gas or fuel stations.

Not all gas stations offer other kinds of fuel. If you’re coming up on a stretch without having to stop at fuel stations, you must fill up your tank even if it’s nearly full.

7. Search for Accommodations Ahead of Time

Traveling during a festive season will require you to book your accommodations ahead of time to avoid last-minute disappointments. Booking your resorts or hotels early will help you get your bookings early enough and probably even get a discount as well.

Nevertheless, make the bookings only when you’re sure, just in case you have a change of mind.

The Bottom Line

Now that you’ve planned your trip adventure with all the tips for an ultimate one, it’s time to hit the open road and create some amazing memories.

Planning a road adventure is necessary, but you should also prioritize having fun on the trip, whether it’s with friends, family, or even solo. So pack those bags, get enough snacks, and be ready for the ultimate road trip that’ll definitely be adventurous!

9 African Countries with the Highest Cost of Living in 2024

10 African Countries with the Highest Cost of Living in 2024
In simple terms, cost of living refers to the amount of money you need to cover basic expenses to maintain a certain standard of living in a particular place and period. Top data and research platform, Numbeo determines a city or country’s cost of living index by focusing on the relative cost of consumer goods prices. However, rent or mortgage payments are not factored in to allow for a more standardized comparison across locations with different housing markets.

When a country’s cost of living is high, basic needs like housing, healthcare, education, and food become expensive burdens on families. This is because it reduces their disposable income and limits their ability to save or enjoy other aspects of life. This widens the inequality gap within a society. Inherently, a high cost of living can discourage economic growth in Africa.

Typically, Africans should not have to worry about a high cost of living. Africa has a large population with low average salaries. To ensure a decent standard of living for most families, the cost of living ought to be affordable. However, factors such as high inflation rates and poverty cause many African countries to battle a high cost of living. According to the UN, approximately 490 million individuals live below the $1.90 PPP per day poverty line. Egypt, Nigeria, and Ethiopia, three of the largest African economies, have inflation rates above 20 percent. That said, here are the African countries with the highest cost of living.

10 African Countries with the Highest Cost of Living
This chart shows the cost of living index for the 9 African countries, ordered from highest to lowest.

1. Mozambique

Mozambique takes the top spot with a cost of living index of 45.2. A family of four is estimated to spend $2,344.5 (149,814.9MT) monthly, excluding rent. This southern African nation faces economic instability resulting from high inflation and the aftermath of natural disasters. According to the World Bank, Mozambique is one of the world’s most vulnerable countries to climate-related shocks like cyclones and floods. These disasters typically affect basic things such as transport infrastructure, energy, water supply, and sanitation services.

2. Senegal

Senegal is one African country that has made significant strides in economic development. The country has an African transformation index score of 31.6, above the African average of 30.3.  However, the country grapples with a high cost of living index of 45.1. A family of four spends approximately $2,638.1 (1,608,086.1 CFA), excluding rent.  Meanwhile, a single person spends about $745.1 (454,212.4CFA). According to a report from Bloomberg, In February 2024, consumer prices in Senegal rose for the second consecutive month to 2.3%

3. Ivory Coast

With a cost of living index of 44.7, Ivory Coast ranks third as the African country with the highest cost of living.  Two people eating a three-course meal at a mid-range restaurant would typically spend an average of 25,000 CFA. While the country offers cheaper options compared to Mozambique and Senegal, factors like urbanization and increasing inflation contribute to a higher cost of living. The inflation rate in the Ivory Coast increased to 3.80 percent in March, and it increased from 3.60 percent in February of 2024.

4. Ethiopia

Ethiopia has a cost of living index of 43.1 and ranks the 72nd country with the highest cost of living globally. Ethiopia is the second most populous country in Africa and one of the fastest-growing economies. However, according to the country’s central bank, the National Bank of Ethiopia, inflation is currently at 28.7%. Ethiopia is a low-wage economy and currently does not provide national minimum wages. This makes it difficult for workers to afford food and other basic needs. The ongoing conflict in the Tigray region adds further strain on the economy. The conflict has caused infrastructural damages worth $22.7 billion and $6 billion in productivity losses.

5. Mauritius

When one thinks of Mauritius, it is easily associated with tourism. The sector contributes 8% of its GDP. Mauritius has also successfully transitioned from an agriculture-based economy to a diversified one with a GDP per capita of $31.16 thousand. This ought to translate to an affordable cost of living for the people. However, Mauritius has a cost of living index of 41.1 and ranks the 79th country with the highest cost of living. The cost of living is, on average, 23.3% higher than in Nigeria. Prices for gas, petrol, food, and public transportation make up the highest expenses.

6. Zambia

Zambia’s economy relies heavily on its copper exports. This means that any price swings can impact government revenue and directly lead to inflation. This also means Zambia is consistently treading on a high inflation rate. Last month, its inflation rate increased to 13.80% from 13.70% in March. To worsen the situation, droughts can disrupt agricultural production and food security, pushing up food prices. The inflation in March is Zambia’s two-year high due to the country experiencing its most devastating drought yet. Zambia currently has a cost of living index of 39.8. A family of four spends an estimated $2,320.4 monthly, excluding rent.

7. Cameroon

Cameroon has a cost of living index of 39.6, making it the 8th most expensive African country to live in in 2024z. The country faces challenges with a heavy dependence on imported goods. This makes them vulnerable to global fluctuations. Also, the devaluation of the Central African CFA franc makes these imports more expensive. A family of four spends about $2,390.3 (1,457,044.1CFA) monthly, excluding rent. Meanwhile, a single person spends about $705.3.

8. Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is the 93rd country with the highest cost of living globally, with a cost of living index of 36.8. The country’s economic history, with hyperinflation, continues to impact the cost of living for its citizens. Its hyperinflationary crisis is reflected in an alarming consumer price index of 561.02%. Zimbabwe currently also has the second highest fuel prices in Africa and occupies the 40th position globally. Zimbabwe’s annual inflation in March reached 55%, a seven-month high, making it the African country with the highest inflation rate in 2024. Last month, the country launched a new currency to help its failing economy gain some stability. However, the impact of this strategy will likely take some time to materialize.

9. South Africa

With a cost of living index of 33.4, South Africa ranks 10th on this list and 104th globally. Since last year, South Africans have faced an intense cost of living crisis, marked by soaring food prices, rising housing costs, and an energy crisis. According to a report from Business Tech, middle-class South Africans need an extra R9,000 every month. However, the cost of living varies significantly within the country. Major cities like Johannesburg and Cape Town tend to be more expensive. For example, the overall cost of living index in Johannesburg is 37.1, while in Durban it is 32.4. The cost of living in South Africa is, on average, 10.6% higher than in Nigeria.

The Bottom Line

Exploring the economic landscape of African countries reveals the complexities and challenges of managing the cost of living. From Mozambique’s struggles with natural disasters to South Africa’s urban pricing disparities, the variance in living expenses across the continent highlights the need for targeted economic policies and interventions.

These ten African countries, each battling with high living costs due to factors like inflation, poverty, and global economic dependencies, offer a compelling snapshot of the broader economic issues facing the continent. For policymakers and economic analysts, these insights serve as a crucial tool in addressing the needs of millions striving for stability and prosperity in Africa’s diverse nations.

This analysis shows the economic pressures and underscores the urgency of sustainable development and inclusive economic planning to ensure that all Africans can achieve a decent standard of living amidst these financial challenges

Top 7 African Countries with the Highest Schengen Visa Rejection Rates in 2024

Top 7 African Countries with the Highest Schengen Visa Rejection Rates
About three in every ten African Schengen visa applicants get rejected. This statistic starkly contrasts the global average rejection rate of 1. This disparity is buttressed in a recent Henley & Partners report. The report reveals that African nations are 70% of the top 10 countries with the highest rejection rates. Globally, the total rejection rate surged from 5% to 17.5% in 2022, marking an increase of 12.5%. In Africa, the rejection rate reached 30% over the same period, a 12% increase from the 18% rejection rate in 2014 and nearly twice the global average. For many Africans, obtaining a visa to travel to the Schengen zone feels like an insurmountable hurdle. The Schengen zone comprises 26 European nations that have agreed to abolish internal border controls. This means that once you have a valid Schengen visa, you can travel freely within the Schengen zone without undergoing border checks. Citizens of countries outside the Schengen zone typically require a Schengen visa to enter the area. This visa allows you to stay for a short-term visit, usually up to 90 days within 180 days. Usually, the average rejection rate for Schengen visas typically falls around 15%.

The consequences of a Schengen rejection extend far beyond travel limitations. It disproportionately impacts African citizens, hindering not only tourism and educational opportunities but also business growth. Due to their nationality, entrepreneurs can be unfairly restricted from expanding their businesses internationally. Visa applications, ideally a gateway to new experiences, become the first obstacle encountered. This can lead to a sense of isolation and a feeling of being excluded from the global community.

Officially, visa rejections are often attributed to doubts about applicants’ intention to leave the destination country before the visa expires. However, some African countries have it worse than others. While the reasons may differ slightly between nations, some common factors could be at play. Here are the top 10 African Countries with the highest Schengen visa rejection rates.

This chart illustrates the Schengen visa rejection rates for the top seven African countries. Algeria, Guinea-Bissau, and Nigeria have particularly high rejection rates, each above 45%, highlighting the challenges faced by applicants from these countries.

1. Algeria

Among African countries, Algeria faces the highest hurdle when it comes to obtaining Schengen visas. Since 2022, Algerians have submitted a recorded total of 392,053 applications. Despite the high application volume, a staggering 179,409 applications were rejected. This translates to a rejection rate of 45.8%. With a rejection rate close to 46%, nearly one out of every two applications is unsuccessful. This can be a significant barrier for Algerians seeking to travel to Europe for work, education, tourism, or family visits.

2. Guinea-Bissau

Compared to Algeria, Guinea-Bissau has a much smaller applicant pool, with only 7,990 Schengen visa applications submitted in 2022. Despite a relatively low application volume, Guinea-Bissau faces a concerning high rejection rate of 45.2%, nearly mirroring Algeria’s high rate. This translates to 3,611 visa applications being rejected.

3. Nigeria

Nigeria falls in the middle ground between Algeria and Guinea-Bissau in terms of application volume. The number of Schengen Visa Applications from Nigeria in 2022 totaled 86,815. However, Nigeria still faces a very high rejection rate of 45.1%. This means that 39,189 Nigerian visa applications were unsuccessful.

4. Ghana

According to the report, Ghana saw a substantial number of Schengen visa applications in 2022. The total number of applications summed up to 42,124. However, a concerningly high number of 18,363 were rejected. This translates to a rejection rate of 43.6%.

5. Senegal

While not the country with the highest rejection rate, Senegal still faces a significant challenge in obtaining Schengen visas for travel within the Schengen zone. In 2024, Senegalese citizens submitted a substantial number of Schengen visa applications – 56,866. However, a concerning number were rejected – 23,683. This translates to a rejection rate of 41.6%.

6. Guinea

In 2022, 11,806 Guineans submitted Schengen visa applications. However, a concerning number of 4,791 were rejected. This translates to a rejection rate of 40.6%, highlighting Guineans’ difficulty securing these visas. Data from the World indicate that Guinea’s GDP per capita potentially supports this concerning rate.

7. Mali

Mali witnessed a moderate number of Schengen visa applications, with a total of 23,117. However, 9,291 were rejected, translating to a rejection rate of 39.9%. This is a substantial barrier for the Malian population of approximately 23 million people. Mali’s ongoing political situation could be a factor influencing embassy decisions. Mali has a history of political instability, having witnessed several coups d’état in recent decades. The most recent coup occurred in August 2020, overthrowing the democratically elected government.

The Bottom Line

According to the data, many African individuals face challenges when trying to obtain a Schengen visa, as the rejection rates are double the global average. These high rejection rates hinder travel and cultural interactions and limit educational and business opportunities for Africans wanting to connect with the Schengen region. In countries like Algeria, Guinea-Bissau, and Nigeria, where almost half of the visa applications are rejected, the impact is profound, affecting both professional plans and contributing to a sense of being excluded from traveling to the Schengen area. Moving forward, it’s important for all involved parties to tackle these disparities and strive towards a visa system that promotes understanding and collaboration across continents.

Ghana among top African countries with highest Schengen Visa rejection rates

Ghana is among the leading African countries with the highest Schengen Visa rejection rates.

According to a new report by migration consultancy firm Henley & Partners, out of a total of 42,124 Ghanaians who applied for a Schengen Visa in 2022, 18,363 (43.6 per cent) were rejected.

Ranked 5th, Ghana comes after Algeria, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka.

The number of applications for Europe’s Schengen Area visas has been declining over the years as rejection rates have surged.

While restrictive for all applications, the European visa regime is notably more stringent towards African visa applicants than those from other regions.

Addressing these issues would signal Europe’s commitment to actively engage in business and strengthen trade relations between Africa and Europe.

African visa applicants face more severe restrictions compared to applicants from other regions, resulting in a disproportionately high rejection rate.

In 2022, Africa topped the list of rejections with 30% or one in three of all processed applications being turned down, even though it had the lowest number of visa applications per capita.

This was 12.5% higher than the global average.

The rejection rates for African applicants for Schengen visas are generally 10% higher than the global average, three times higher than the highest rejection rate, and ten times higher than for Americans.

Visa rejection data and trends

Globally, the absolute number of Schengen visa applications decreased from 16.7 million in 2014 to 7.6 million in 2022, representing a decline of almost 9 million applications.

In other words, the global number of Schengen visa applications declined by nearly 54.7%. During the same period, the absolute number of Schengen visa applications in Africa decreased from 2.22 million in 2014 to 2.05 million in 2022, a decrease of almost 171,000 applications or 7.7%.

Africa accounted for seven of the top 10 countries with the highest Schengen visa rejection rates in 2022: Algeria (45.8%), Guinea-Bissau (45.2%), Nigeria (45.1%), Ghana (43.6%), Senegal (41.6%), Guinea (40.6%), and Mali (39.9%).

By contrast, only one in 25 applicants residing in the US, Canada, or the UK were rejected, and one in 10 from Russia.

As per illustration, Algerians face a rejection rate that is ten times greater than that of those applying in Canada, while Ghanaians are four times more likely to be rejected than Russians.

Nigerians face almost three times the rejection rate of applicants in Turkey (15.5) and twice that of Iranians (23.7)

Apple iPhone sales fall in nearly all countries

Apple iPhone sales fall in nearly all countries

Sales of  iPhones have fallen in almost every market across the globe, according to the latest results from

 Apple.

The technology giant said overall demand for its smartphones dropped by more than 10% in the first three months of this year, with sales falling in every geographic region except for Europe.

Apple said that overall, revenues across the company declined by 4% to $90.8bn (£72.5bn), which was the biggest drop for more than a year.

Nevertheless, the results were not as bad as expected and Apple’s share price rose in after-hours trading in New York.

The company said the figures were distorted by Covid-related supply disruptions, which led to unusually strong sales during the same period last year.

It pledged that sales would return to growth in the months ahead, noting upcoming product launches and investments in artificial intelligence (AI).

For the

iPhone, sales in the critical greater China market dropped by 8%. Mr Cook attempted to reassure investors about the state of the business in the world’s second largest economy, noting that

iPhone sales were actually up in “mainland” China.

“I maintain a great view of China in the long term,” he said.

Competition in that market has been intensifying from local rivals such Huawei.

Gil Luria, senior software analyst at DA Davidson, said companies such as Huawei do well in China because “it is the homegrown brand”.

“But in terms of features, functionality and prestige, iPhone still has an advantage over any other handset,” he told the BBC’s Today programme.

“So any time consumers get the choice and have the resources they’re going to buy an

iPhone – that’s not any different in China.”

Struggles at the company – which has endured a streak of sales declines for five of the last six quarters – marked a contrast with the wider market.

Globally, smartphone shipments rose 10% in the first three months of the year, expanding after a long lacklustre period, according to research firm Canalys.

Mr Luria said that for

Apple, there hasn’t been “significant improvements to the handset” since the  iPhone 12 was launched almost four years ago “when

Apple introduced 5G connectivity which compelled a lot of consumers to upgrade the phone”.

He added: “What they’re hoping for now is that they can introduce enough new AI features into the

iPhone 16 which will come out later this year in order to finally drive a big

 iPhone upgrade cycle.”

Apple is also facing legal battles with regulators in the US and Europe over its app store fees.

A separate anti-monopoly lawsuit in the US against Google threatens the lucrative payments

Apple receives from the search giant in exchange for making Google the default search engine on Safari, Apple’s internet browser.

According to court filings, those payments amounted to about $20bn in 2022, a sum that helped lift

 Apple profits.

Pre-tax profit for the three months was flat at $28bn and the company announced that it was setting aside $110bn to buy back shares.

Finance chief Luca Maestri said Apple sales were expected to rise in the “low single digits” in the three months to June.

He added that the firm expected double digit growth in its services business, offering more guidance than the company typically provides.

Looking ahead, Angelo Zino, senior equity analyst at CFRA Research, said: “China is holding up better than expected and there are a host of upcoming events/catalysts on the horizon that could improve investor sentiment.”

Five crucial steps for brides beginning their wedding planning journey

Five crucial steps for brides beginning their wedding planning journey

Weddings have always played an important role in marriage and society, but they seem to have become more opulent and flamboyant over the past few years.

The average cost of a wedding is enough to give any bride and groom hot flashes, and there are hours and hours of planning that go into making the details work.

The key to figuring out how to plan a wedding is knowing the responsibilities associated with planning a huge event.

Perhaps, you’ve always operated under the assumption that a wedding planner would help you figure out all the details of your wedding, but the reality is that most brides and grooms plan their big day without professional help.

If you don’t have the luxury of having a wedding planner on your team, it’s easy to get overwhelmed — which is why you need a plan and a wedding planning checklist.

Here are the first 5 steps all brides who are planning their wedding should take:

1. Start with the guests

The very first step is to start building and trimming your guest list. There are multiple ways you can do this, but here’s one technique:

  • Begin by adding every name you and your groom would possibly inviteThis may include immediate family, friends, second cousins, college roommates, etc. It’s a liberal list that helps you get something down on paper.
  • Once you have this big list, start to trim it down. Remove the people you haven’t seen in a while and don’t keep in touch with them. Erase names of individuals who recently got married and didn’t invite you to their wedding (not out of spite, but practicality. If they didn’t invite you, they shouldn’t be offended when you don’t invite them). It should be easy to remove 15-20 percent of the original names on your list.

Here’s where things get tricky. Since you haven’t decided on a budget or wedding venue yet, you need a couple of different guest lists. One is your strict, low-budget guest list that contains the absolute bare minimum. Think of immediate family and closest friends. The second list is a much looser one, which includes additional guests whose invitations are contingent on cost-related factors.

2. Identify a budget

Step two sort of happens in tandem with step one. Think about financials and how much money you have to spend on the wedding. Will you be paying for it yourself? Are your parents helping out? Is your groom’s family going to pitch in? Figure out the absolute maximum you have to spend, as well as a lower number that you’re more comfortable with.

3. Find the location

With your budget in tow, start your search for a venue. Popular venues will often fill up a year or two in advance, so make sure you start looking as soon as possible. You’ll want to zero in on a couple of different options, just so you can see the cost differences, as well as potential limitations on the number of guests.

4. Research vendors

Once you have your guest list, budget, and location, you’ll have a much clearer picture of what sort of money you have left for things like flowers, food, drink, entertainment, cake, etc. Spend time researching vendors and looking for trustworthy ones. It’s better to spend a little more on a reliable vendor than it is to save money and get a vendor you feel uneasy about.

5. Understand what’s important

Finally, make sure you understand what’s important. Having beautiful floral centrepieces and perfectly cooked appetizers is great, but these elements won’t make or break your wedding. Focus on your groom and enjoy the evening.

Your wedding is all about you and your groom. Once the big day arrives, it’s time to relax and enjoy the moment. While you may find it difficult to step back, you need to switch roles. You’re no longer the wedding planner — you’re the bride.

Pass off those planning responsibilities to someone you can trust — such as your mother or maid of honour — and soak up every last second of what will be one of the best days of your life

Nigerian Lady Set To Become First African Rider To Ride Bike From Kenya To Naija

A Nigerian lady, Ebaide Joy, is set to become the first person to ride on a motorbike from Mombasa, Kenya, to Lagos, Nigeria.

Ebaide began the journey on March 10, 2024, and she is expected to arrive in Lagos, Nigeria, by the end of this month.

The trip will take her through African countries such as Kenya and East Africa, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congo Brazaville, Cameroon, and finally Nigeria.

The Edo State-born music artist, while stating what prompted her move to embark on the journey, noted, “When I was 23 years old, I was involved in a car accident that put me in a wheelchair for several months, and I had to undergo surgery to fix my spinal cord.

“That second chance at life gave me the inspiration to live life to the fullest and to explore the world. I had in the past converted an old van into a camper van to travel; at some point, I spent some months travelling in a tricycle.

“I decided to buy my by motorbike in July last year, I will be using the trans-African highway. Every day is an opportunity to remind myself that limitations only exist in my head. Living with titanium screws and rods and holding my spinal cord in place has never stopped me from experiencing life to the fullest.

“I chose a motorcycle no vehicle makes me feel nearly as alive as my motorcycle does. I will be riding against the wind, knowing that the course of my existence lies in my hands. I hope this motivates more people to kick fear in the face and live their lives on their own terms.”

Ebaide is currently in Tanzania and she is expected to be in Zambia this week.

Reasons Why Davido Cuts Ties with Mercy Johnson and Husband Reveals as Throwback Post Surfaces

A throwback post has resurfaced showing Nigerian singer Davido embroiled in a bitter exchange with Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson Okojie and her husband, Prince Odi Okojie.

The post, originating from a comment thread on Eniola Badmus’s post, exposes Davido’s disdain for the couple, accusing them of harboring “evil” traits.

The drama unfolded when Eniola Badmus shared a congratulatory message to Mercy Johnson on the supposed arrival of her fourth child years ago.

Davido seized the opportunity to unleash his grievances, branding the couple as “wicked people” while begrudgingly extending his congratulations.

When probed by a concerned fan about the reason behind his spiteful comment, Davido bluntly replied, “Just evil set of People,” leaving many puzzled and curious about the underlying feud.

The genesis of this animosity traces back to Davido’s alleged failure to honor an agreement to attend the grand opening of the Okojies’ luxury hotel venture, Henod Luxury Hotels in Abulegba, Lagos.

Despite announcing his presence at the event on his Instagram page, Davido, who was on tour in America at the time, failed to show up, leaving attendees and organizers disappointed.

It is reported that Mercy Johnson and Prince Odi subsequently took legal action against Davido for his no-show, alleging breach of agreement.

Efforts to reach Davido’s management team proved futile as they reportedly stopped taking calls, exacerbating the situation.

Netizens Reactions…

PinkDuchess reacted: “Lol that’s such a derogatory remark to make.”

Khojo Ghost said: “Na waa o.”

Swudy6e70 added: “Smile. Series of attitudes from this so called artistist. Everyone one of them would be alright las las.”
