Catholic Bishop wants youth to make church activities go viral on social media

The cleric stated that the prevailing delinquencies and societal ills could be attributed to ignorance and the lack of knowledge.

A Catholic bishop [Daily Post Nigeria]

Ukpong gave the charge on Wednesday, when a group, known as the Catholic Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (CAMPAN), paid him a courtesy visit in his office at the Mater Dei Cathedral, Umuahia.

He described the knowledge deficit among the Catholic faithful as worrisome, saying that the phenomenon was more prevalent among the younger generation. The cleric said that the prevailing delinquencies and societal ills could be attributed to ignorance and the lack of knowledge.

“All these challenges that we are witnessing are as a result of ignorance and the lack of knowledge,” he said.

Ukpong further appealed to the CAMPAN members to enhance their activities, in order that the church would feel their impact more.

The association can do better to make greater impact in the church.

“You can also help to ensure that the activities of the church go viral in the social media because that is now the global trend,” the clergyman stated.

He advised the National President of the group, Chimdi Oluoha, to ensure that he excelled in his assignment in order to bring honour rather than shame to his home diocese. He promised that the church would do the best within the available resources to support him to succeed.

Earlier, the Abia Chairman of CAMPAN, Hyacinth Okoli, said the visit was to invite the bishop to the 2024 World Communications Day celebration, scheduled for Sunday. Okoli, represented by his vice, Chikezie Onyeabor, also formally presented the new National President to the bishop during the visit.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oluoha, who was the immediate past Abia Chairman of the group, was elected at the association’s 2024 Convention held in Isele-Ukwu, Delta State, last week.

In a brief remark, Oluoha promised to discharge the duties of his office diligently and efficiently to take the association and the Church to higher height.

Nigerian Government Denies Binance Bribery Allegations

The Nigerian government has rejected claims of attempted bribery made by Binance CEO Richard Teng, accusing the company of trying to divert attention from a criminal investigation with baseless accusations of bribery.

In a press statement by Rabiu Ibrahim, Special Assistant to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, the Nigerian government dismissed Teng’s allegations as lacking credibility, labelling them as a tactic to distract from serious legal challenges the company faces in the country.

This claim by the CEO lacks any iota of substance. It is nothing but a diversionary tactic and an attempted act of blackmail by a company desperate to obfuscate the grievous criminal charges it is facing in Nigeria,” the government stated.

Nigerian Government Denies Binance Bribery Allegations

The government denied any solicitation of bribes and reiterated that Binance is being investigated for alleged involvement in money laundering, terrorism financing, and foreign exchange manipulation.

The statement highlighted the escape of a Binance executive from court-ordered custody, who is now considered a fugitive.

“While this lawful investigation was going on, an executive of Binance, who was in court-sanctioned protective custody, escaped from Nigeria, and he is now a fugitive from the law. Working with the security agencies in Nigeria, Interpol is currently executing an international arrest warrant on the said fugitive,”  the statement noted.

It also underscored Binance’s legal troubles in the United States, where the company faces similar charges, mentioning the recent imprisonment and fines imposed on Binance’s founder.

“The phantom bribe claim is part of an orchestrated international campaign by this company that is facing criminal prosecution in many countries, including the United States, to undermine the Nigerian government.

“Just a week ago, the founder and former CEO of Binance, Changpeng Zhao, was sentenced to prison in the United States, after pleading guilty to charges very similar to what Binance is being investigated for in Nigeria. In addition, Zhao agreed to pay a fine of $50 million, while Binance is liable for $4.3 billion in fines and forfeitures to the US government,” the statement added.

The statement concluded by reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to the rule of law and international standards, firmly rejecting any attempts at coercion or blackmail, whether domestic or foreign.

The governor said the measure became necessary as the 2024 rainy season is fast approaching. Hajiya Zainab Rabo, the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Media Affairs, made the position of Namadi known in a statement in Dutse on Thursday.

Rabo said the governor has directed the state Commissioner for Environment, Dr Nura Ibrahim and other officials of the ministry to kick-start the project on Wednesday. The governor’s aide said that Namadi equally approved the ministry of Environment to adopt other immediate measures to ensure better flood control in the year.

She said that the measures which include distilling of water drainage systems as well as prevention of throwing solid waste in the water channels, were imperative to curtail the menace of flooding in the state.

According to her, the proactive measure will lead to protecting the lives and property of people in the state. Rabo said that a nine-member committee has been set up by the state to go around and mobilise community support on the successful implementation of the directive.

The Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) has announced Bayelsa State as the host of the 2023–2024 NWFL Premiership Super Six.

The highly-anticipated NWFL Premiership title championship is scheduled to run from May 18th to May 26th, 2024, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

Bayelsa was confirmed as the host by the NWFL following a review of bid interests from various states to stage the playoff competition.

Bayelsa to Host 2024 NWFL Premiership Super Six Playoffs

“On behalf of the board and management of the NWFL, let me congratulate Bayelsa State for being selected as the hosts for the NWFL Premiership Super Six,” NWFL chairman Nkechi Obi said. She added, “We hope this opportunity to host a great Super Six will further boost women’s football in Bayelsa and raise the profile of the sport in Nigeria.”

This will be the first time that the NWFL Premiership playoff tournament will be hosted by Bayelsa State. Yenagoa is also the home ground of Bayelsa Queens, who had a memorable 2022 NWFL Premiership campaign. They famously won the domestic title, the WAFU-B playoff, and finished third at the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League held in Morocco.

Regarding the tournament’s schedule, Modupe Shabi, the NWFL’s Chief Operating Officer, said the Super Six playoff will be played in a round-robin format, with each participating team playing five matches in the race for the coveted title.

Shabi mentioned that the participating clubs are expected to arrive in Yenagoa on Thursday, May 16, 2024, followed by the draw and pre-match meeting to be held on Friday, May 17, at 10 am.

The playoff tournament would begin on Saturday, May 18, with Matchday 1 and end with Matchday 5 on Sunday, May 26. Three matches will be played on each Match Day, with breaks in between match days.

With holders Delta Queens missing out, six giants will battle for the coveted Nigerian league crown, having qualified as the top three finishers from two groups during the regular season of 14 matches. The six teams include the host team Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Confluence Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and Heartland Queens.

In Group A, Nasarawa Amazons finished as group winners with 27 points from 14 matches, followed by Confluence Queens in second with 25 points and Heartland Queens in third with 24 points.

Sitting atop Group B was Rivers Angels with 27 points, four ahead of the Edo Queens in second and Bayelsa Queens in third with 22 points from 14 games.

The winner of this year’s Super Six tournament will represent the country in the WAFU-B qualifiers to qualify for the 4th CAF Women’s Champions League.

Food critic Opeyemi Famakin says Nigerian women only love men conditionally

He acknowledged that there are some exceptions to the rule.

Food critic Opeyemi Famakin says that men are not loved unconditionally

He said, “I can speak in the Nigerian context and I can say that men are loved but it is very conditional. Women would say this and that but in my own opinion I think the love for men is purely conditional. There are exceptions, yes. But generally speaking, it is very conditional, we are loved on conditions.”

One of the conditions the critic stated was “potential,” asserting that Nigerian women would love and stay with a man who is still discovering himself if they see potential in him.

“When Nigerian girls see potential they can invest in potential. If a man is growing slowly one year is fine but if there’s no progress for five years, I’ll say she should leave the man. But if she loves him and wants to stay, I won’t encourage her to be with the man,” he stated.

Famakin emphasised that he wouldn’t suggest that a woman stay with a man who is still “finding himself” after five years.

“Imagine if your sister is dating a guy that is finding his footing for five years, he’s slowly growing. Would you encourage her to stay? Cho Cho Cho, no workings,” he said to Jermaine in between fits of laughter.

South Africa Signs New Law Recognising Muslim Marriages

0

South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Divorce Amendment Bill into law on Thursday, May 9, 2024, the Presidency confirmed.

The bill modifies the Divorce Act of 1979 to officially recognise Muslim marriages and ensure the protection of the rights of Muslim women and children in case of divorce.

This legal update follows a Constitutional Court ruling that highlighted the importance of safeguarding the interests of Muslim women and children within the context of dissolved Muslim marriages.

The amendments to the legislation address previous gaps in the Divorce Act of 1979, which treated Muslim marriages differently from those conducted under the Marriage Act, particularly in terms of the rights of women.

The lack of recognition of Muslim marriages in civil law meant that individuals, particularly women, married under Islamic law had no legal recourse to seek a divorce through the court system.

As a result, the rights and interests of Muslim women and minor children or dependents in Muslim marriages were not adequately protected compared to those in other types of marriages.

Presently, Muslim couples who opt for Islamic marriages can access legal protections similar to civil spouses under South African law only if they also register a civil marriage in addition to their Islamic union.

The newly enacted amendments outline a clear definition of a Muslim marriage within the Divorce Act by ensuring protection for dependent children and minors of Muslim marriages.

It also establishes guidelines for asset redistribution after divorce, and specifies the forfeiture of marital benefits in cases of dissolved Muslim marriages.

Burna Boy‘s effect on ‘Yaba Buluku’ remix is evident in the Spotify streaming numbers where the song has garnered over 10 million streams which is nearly 10 times more streams than the original.

Joselu Leads Real Madrid Past Bayern Munich to Champions League Final

Substitute Joselu emerged as the hero for Real Madrid, propelling them to a dramatic 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu and securing their spot in the 2024 UEFA Champions League final.

With Bayern substitute Alphonso Davies initially putting the visitors in the lead, the stage seemed set for a Bayern triumph. However, Joselu had other plans, coming off the bench to snatch two close-range goals in the dying moments of the match, clinching a remarkable 4-3 aggregate victory for the La Liga champions.

Despite Real’s dominance for much of the game, it was Bayern’s Manuel Neuer who initially stole the spotlight with a series of impressive saves, denying Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior’s efforts.

As the match progressed, Neuer’s heroics seemed to pave the way for Bayern to capitalise on the counter, with Davies seizing the opportunity to score his first goal in the competition, breaking the deadlock in the 68th minute.

Yet, as history often dictates, Real Madrid refused to concede defeat easily. Joselu capitalised on a mistake from Neuer, levelling the score in the 88th minute, before sealing the deal with a tap-in during stoppage time, leaving German fans heartbroken.

With this victory, Real Madrid now sets its sights on the final showdown against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley on June 1st.
