Kaduna fire service records two deaths, 81 incidents

The Kaduna State Fire Service said it recorded two deaths from 81 fire outbreaks across the state between March and April 2024.

Paul Aboi, the service’s director, made this known in an interview with NAN in Kaduna on Thursday.

According to him, two persons died while three persons sustained various degrees of injuries in the outbreaks.

Aboi said the fire service received reports of fire outbreaks in Kaduna, Zaria, and Kafanchan during the period under review.

He said that the fire service was doing its best to reduce the incidences of fire outbreaks in the state by sensitising residents on fire safety measures.

“Property worth N10 billion was saved from destruction within the period while property worth N2 billion was destroyed,’’ he said.

The director commended hospitals nationwide for their prompt attendance to the victims.

I’m still alive – Man says after burying self in coffin for 23 hrs

A Nigerian man, identified as Young C, who picked the challenge of spending 24 hours buried alive in a coffin, says in a viral video that he is still alive.

The skitmaker commenced the challenge on Wednesday and spent the whole day entombed in a wooden coffin equipped with a pillow, a hand fan, bedsheets, a power bank camera, and two light bulbs.

Young C live-streamed his stay underground via his YouTube channel.

In an update on his Instagram account on Thursday, the skitmaker said while panting that he is still alive, “I am still fine, I am okay. A lot of you might think something has happened, but nothing has happened, I am fine.

“My problem is just that I have run out of water, I might be forced to drink this (my urine). Guys, I am fine”.

In an earlier update, Young C revealed that he had been buried for over 8 hours and was experiencing physical discomfort, including excessive sweating. He shared a video from the coffin, showing his camera and light still functioning, and expressed his determination to complete the challenge.

Police investigate illegal embalming of Mohbad’s body

The Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police Force is currently escalating its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the passing of the renowned singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, famously known as Mohbad.

mohbad

The inquiry was initiated after Mohbad’s family and those involved in the ongoing investigation regarding the unauthorized embalming of the deceased’s body were summoned.

Boluwatife Adeyemo, also known as Darosha, who served as Mohbad’s Personal Assistant, was previously questioned at the Zone 2 Police Headquarters alongside the deceased’s parents, Joseph and Abosede.

Following Darosha’s interrogation, law enforcement officials have called for the appearance of all individuals mentioned in his statement for further questioning.

Monisola Odumosu, who heads the family’s legal team, confirmed that the subsequent round of questioning took place on Tuesday at the Zone 2 Police Headquarters in Lagos State. Odumosu also mentioned that the police are actively working to uncover the identity of the “illegal mortician.”

He added: “The police will reveal to the public soon, who illegally embalmed the body of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely known as Mohbad.

“The police stated they would work on their report and continue investigations which will be directed to the Legal Department of the force for a recommendation.

“The meeting was held at Zone 2 and present at the meeting were Mr. Joseph Aloba (Mohbad’s father), Boluwatife Adeyemi (aka Darosha), Adura Aloba (Mohbad’s younger brother), Mrs. Abosede Olumuyi (Mohbad’s mother) and Cynthia Omowunmi Aloba (Mohbad’s wife). Others include Iya Lolade and Samuel (Mr. Joseph Aloba’s witnesses) and lawyers to the parties”

The family’s legal representatives had formally lodged a petition with the police, as directed by their clients, asserting that Boluwatife Adeyemo, the personal assistant to the late Mohbad, had engaged in the unlawful embalming of the singer’s body.

Questlove is very disappointed in Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and rap in general: ‘Hip hop is truly dead’

The Roots drummer and hip hop elder statesman weighed in on the war of words between the two biggest rappers in the game.

With a security guard hospitalized, their children dragged into the fray, and rap fans foaming at the mouth, the Drake and Kendrick Lamar beef has perhaps gotten a bit out of hand.

At least that’s how Roots drummer, Oscar-winner, and noted hip hop shaman Questlove sees it.

Questlove took to Instagram to vent his disappointment at the ongoing feud, which produced a series of withering, downright volatile diss tracks over the last few days.

Drake, Questlove, Kendrick

“Nobody won the war,” Questlove wrote. “This wasn’t about skill. This was a wrestling match level mudslinging and takedown by any means necessary — women & children (& actual facts) be damned.”

The rap battle started with each emcee going after each other’s skills, careers, alleged ghostwriters, typical rap battle stuff. But Lamar got very personal with the April 30 track “Euphoria,” dissing Drake‘s parenting skills and leveling accusations of cultural appropriation, followed on May 3 by “6:16 in LA,” in which Lamar claims he has moles within Drake’s inner circle.

Later that day, Drake quickly responded with “Family Matters,” taking shots at Lamar’s relationship with his fiancé Whitney Alford, claiming the Compton native is a domestic abuser and that one of his kids isn’t his.

Lamar then hit back, even quicker (some 20 minutes later) with “Meet the Grahams,” dragging the Toronto rapper’s son, mother, and even an alleged secret 11-year-old daughter into the mix, while claiming the Degrassi alum is also running a sex trafficking ring out of his mansion.

The Pulitzer Prize winner then followed that up with “Not Like Us,” accusing Drake of being a pedophile. Drake responded to these allegations with “The Heart Part 6,” denying any sexual wrongdoing and revealing that he planted the secret daughter story in order to goad Lamar into rhyming about it.

While many fans have been eating up the drama, Questlove is dismayed by the collateral damage to the rappers’ innocent bystanders.

White hairdressers saw Whoopi Goldberg’s dreads and asked ‘What are we supposed to do with this s—?’

White hairdressers saw Whoopi Goldberg’s dreads and asked ‘What are we supposed to do with this s—?’

“As soon as they started to spray your hair with water, you knew it was game over and that you would have to make a stink. And I did.

Whoopi Goldberg is sharing her experience with racism in the hair and makeup departments on film sets.

In her new book Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me, the Ghost star discusses the prejudice she faced on predominantly white productions. “The producers or stylists would look at my hair, which I had been wearing in dreads since the late ‘70s, and say, ‘What are we supposed to do with this s—?’” Goldberg recalls. ”I guess that every Black actress they had worked with before me had either straightened her hair or worn it very short or worn a wig because that’s what made the film people comfortable. I wasn’t about to change my hair.”

“People would continue to say things to me like, ‘Oh, you’re so articulate,’ as if that was a pleasant surprise,” she remembers.

Goldberg also explains how her friend and hair stylist, Julia Walker, offered sound advice after the actress expressed her frustration. “Julia said, ‘They don’t know any better. They don’t know anyone like you,’” Goldberg writes. “‘So to them, you are this kind of unicorn, somebody they’ve never come across. You don’t quiet your mouth when you have something to say. I think you are very hard for them to understand. They thought you should be a lot easier to deal with than you are.’”

“I came to understand that Julia was also a first for many people because she was a Black woman who could do any actor’s hair,” Goldberg continues. “Rarely did they ever let her, though. The stylist was usually someone white who was limited in what they could do because they couldn’t do Black hair. Often folks would say they could, but as soon as they started to spray your hair with water, you knew it was game over and that you would have to make a stink. And I did.”

Goldberg writes about how her hair and makeup team helped Hollywood improve its treatment of Black talent.  “My makeup man, who comes from makeup royalty, was Mike Germain, and he agreed with Julia,” she says. “We spent many great years together, and I watched the two of them teach an industry that really didn’t have much of a clue about black skin or hair to help move the needle forward. This was in the 1980s and 1990s, a long time ago, it seems, but Julia was right about a few things in all of this.”

Rivers: APC lawmakers cannot impeach Fubara – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, says the All Progressives Congress, APC, lawmakers at the Rivers House of Assembly cannot impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara, because they are no longer members of the House.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said this at a news conference on Wednesday in Abuja.

Ologunagba said the directive by the state APC chapter for the lawmakers to commence impeachment proceedings against the governor was in vain.

He said the APC lawmakers had since vacated their seats at the House, by virtue of Section 109 (1) (g) of the 1999 Constitution.

“The lawmakers claiming to be APC members lost their seats after their defection from the PDP, the political party platform on which they were elected into the House.

“For emphasis, Section 109 (1) (g) of the 1999 Constitution provides that: a member of a House of Assembly shall vacate his seat in the House if … (g) being a person whose election to the House of Assembly was sponsored by a political Party, he becomes a member of another political party before the expiration of the period for which that House was elected.

“It should be noted that Section 109 (1) (g) of the Constitution is self-executory. The import of this provision is that the members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, who defected, have vacated their seat by reason of that defection.”

Gov Kefas decries blackout in Taraba, condemns delay in power restoration

Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas has expressed concern over the disruption in electricity supply caused by the alleged vandalization of four transmission line towers along the Jos-Gombe 330kV line.

The disruption which occurred on 22 April 2024, has left the state in total blackout for almost three weeks.

The governor, in a press briefing held in Jalingo, on Thursday through his Commissioner of Energy and Economic Development, Naomi Tanko Agbu, described the act as senseless, saying, “These senseless acts of sabotage have not only jeopardized the reliability of electrical infrastructure in the North-East region but have also resulted in widespread inconvenience and hardship for our community, plunging millions into blackout.”

The governor also condemned the lengthy time it was taking to resolve the matter, saying it shows complete neglect by the federal government to Taraba State and the region.

“If there is one thing, we have all learnt in the past few days from the response time to faults and the priority of the heads in the sector, is that the network to the North-East region is vulnerable.

”The outcry for a robust plan such as the North-East ring circuit as contained in the proposal of TCN expansion plan to connect the North–East to the South of Nigeria should be implemented by the federal government immediately”.

He urged the people of the state to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or individuals observed near transmission line towers or electrical facilities attempting to vandalise any infrastructure.

Stating that YEDC has made available phone numbers and contact information that whistleblowers can use in contacting them.

The Ministry of Energy and Economic Development, according to him, can also be reached with information on vandalism and unsanctioned activities of sabotage to the network.

He also called on all federal representatives from the state and the northeast region at large to be proactive in probing the lengthy disregard for power restoration to the northeast region of Nigeria.

The state government, he said, is committed to doing everything in its power to ensure that normalcy of electrical supply is restored and that good measures are put in place to prevent future incidents of vandalism.

The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has assured the family of slain Customs Assistant, Auwal Haruna that the Service is doing everything possible to apprehend the perpetrators.

Haruna was killed during a brutal attack by suspected smugglers on Customs operatives at Gamjin Makaho checkpoint along the Katsina-Dankama road on April 17, 2024.

Adeniyi said the NCS has commenced investigations and will find those responsible. He vowed the killers would not go unpunished, demonstrating the importance of every NCS personnel.

Referring to the incident as “painful and unforgettable,” CG Adeniyi stressed that NCS will ensure the suspects are arrested and punished.

The Customs CG described the killing as unprovoked and expressed grief over the death of Haruna. He commiserated with the family and the entire Kayawa community.

Adeniyi highlighted the dangers faced by NCS officers and saluted their heroism, courage, determination, and patriotism.

“NCS, in collaboration with other security agencies, are tirelessly working to apprehend the perpetrators to face the full wrath of the law,” he said.

While praying for Haruna’s soul, Adeniyi assured his family that the NCS will continue to support them during and after the grieving period. He added that the slain officer joins the ranks of those who served their nation with honour.

While addressing the delegation at the Government House in Katsina, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, charged security agencies in the state to arrest the killers of the customs officer to face the law.

He said: “It is very important that the security agencies in charge of investigation to ensure that the culprits are brought to book and justice is done.

“On behalf of myself and the good people of Katsina State, I condole the Comptroller General of Customs and the entire personnel of the Service over the irreplaceable loss.”

He, however, said the engagements between the Nigeria Customs Service and border communities in the state were cordial and yielding positive results, hence the need for its sustainability.

Dig out sponsors, perpetrators of insecurity in Nigeria – Gov Yusuf to security agencies

The Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has appealed to the Security Agencies to dig out the roots of those behind serious problems of insecurity in Nigeria, to mitigate its impact and bring total peace to citizens.

He said proactive strategies are required to tackle the huge challenges of insecurities, noting that sitting to discuss the issues will only allow idea sharing while information gathering goes with real actions from the stakeholders.

The Governor said this during the Directorate of State Security Services, DSS, Northwestern High-Security zonal conference in Kano.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, said, “I challenge you to use intelligence data gathering to locate the whereabouts of those perpetrating the crimes, are they Politicians, Traditional Leaders, Religious or Business Community, do more to unravel those sponsoring and conducting attacks on innocent lives for the Country to be peaceful”.

The convener of the program, and who is the State DSS Director in Kano, Alhassan Muhammad, said the 14h Quarterly Conference of the State Directors of Security (SDSes), Northwest Geopolitical Zone, was an initiative of the Director General State Services, DGSS, Yusuf Magaji BICHI.

He said the conference is intended to, among other things, facilitate operational and intelligence-sharing synergy among State SSS Directors across the geo-political zones in the Country.

“It therefore serves as a platform for them to come together to exchange knowledge, share insights, and explore innovative solutions to address the myriad of security challenges prevalent in the zone.

Alhassan Muhammad noted that in today’s rapidly evolving world, security concerns have become increasingly complex and multifaceted, from cybersecurity threats to physical security challenges, from terrorism to armed banditry, from farmers/herders’ clashes to youth restiveness, environmental tensions, intra/inter political party disputes.

“The security landscape is constantly evolving, presenting new and unprecedented challenges to security agencies, the executive, legislators, judiciary and societies across the country. Thus, this conference has curated a comprehensive program that features thought-provoking keynote presentations, interactive discussions, and networking opportunities designed to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among SDSes from various States.”

Divorced Men Reveal The Final Straw In Their Marriages

When you know it’s over, you know.

marriage usually deteriorates slowly, after months or years of simmering tension and poor communication.

But as most divorced people will tell you, if your outlook on the relationship is already bleak, sometimes there’s a moment ― a big argument or shocking revelation ― that signals to you that the marriage is beyond saving.

Recently we asked divorced men to share what the final straw was in their marriages. See what they had to say below.

The affair

“For me, it was learning that my infant daughter had met my wife’s affair partner. I could have probably worked through anything, but that just left me repulsed by the marriage at that point. The best thing now is being able to see how much better off I am as not just a person but as a father. I’ve always been a good dad, but after my divorce, I became a better father than I thought I could be.” ― Daniel D.

The co-dependent family

“For me, it was the co-dependence she displayed amongst her family members. Her mother would come and stay for weeks or months, obsessively cleaning our home and doing the family laundry. My ex-wife was unable to care for our children without her mother’s constant help. Meanwhile, my family had to schedule and plan any visit whatsoever. I separated from my ex-wife after her brother lived with us without contributing for over 16 months. We were never able to connect as a couple because she put her family first, her kids second and I was a distant third.” ― Drew L.

The smoothie

“The last straw in my marriage wasn’t a fight or an argument. It wasn’t even a misunderstanding or miscommunication. The morning routine in our house was hectic and hurried. My wife usually tried to fix the kids and me a little something to eat while I loaded the car or gave the dog a quick walk before we all left the house together. Most mornings, my wife made me a fruit smoothie, which I always appreciated. I’d slam it down in mere seconds so I wouldn’t have to take it with me in the car. One day, as I was chugging my breakfast, I coughed up a huge wooden shard that went from my smoothie cup to the back of my throat. I gagged as I removed it from my mouth. At first, I had no idea what it was… until I saw a wooden spoon sitting on the counter, its end having been shredded by the blades of the blender. I held it up and showed my wife. She just shrugged. The car ride to work was quiet and I mostly thought about how little my wife cared about me.” ― Bill F.

The divorce attorney letters

“My wife asked me to recycle some papers of hers, and as I was going through them, removing our names and addresses, I came across correspondence between her and a divorce attorney, which had been going on since the start of our marriage. In the letters, she was formulating the best plan to get the most money she could from me in support, and one of the letters mentioned a secret brokerage account she had. In that letter, she had asked her attorney when she should transfer stocks from our joint account to her personal account. After the shock wore off and I wiped away my tears, I went out into the very cold night for a long walk, realizing that I had been completely duped and blindsided and the chances of moving forward with our marriage from here were very small.” ― Matt S.

The open-marriage dealbreaker

“The thing that put an end to my marriage was when my then-wife was texting with a female love interest on our couch while completely ignoring me. I had asked her several questions and tried to make conversation, and she simply failed to respond. We had decided to open up our relationship as she was becoming more curious about women, which was fine. But I wanted it to be hierarchical nonmonogamy. Clearly, I wasn’t her main preoccupation anymore. We had a lot of other issues to work out. If we weren’t going to cherish one another, it seemed to me we wouldn’t do the hard work necessary to get us back on track.” ― Philip T.

The yearlong doghouse

“The last straw for me came after sleeping on the couch for a full year. I began having panic attacks, waking up in the middle of the night with my heart pounding, in a cold sweat, and thinking I was going to have a stress-induced heart attack. I knew then that I had to make a change or I might end up dropping dead.” ― Steve R.

The phone call

“My ex-wife and I both had our share of fooling around during our eight years of marriage. But we reached a point where we agreed that if one of us stepped out again, the marriage would be over. Shortly after this agreement, I received a call from my wife’s lover’s girlfriend. She gave me her boyfriend’s pager number. She told me that my wife and her boyfriend were together, and that if I called right then, I would receive a call back from my wife within the next two minutes. When I received that call, our marriage was officially over.” ― David A.

The bank account

“I was exhausted, anxiously trying to return home after an intense travel week for my sales job, when I got the call that made it clear the previous 17 years of marriage counseling was not enough to accomplish the goal of till death do us part. It was the bank, verifying that I had moved $50,000 into my wife’s name and changed the passwords and secret questions to our joint account. It soon became clear that my wife instructed another man to impersonate me and take for herself what was ours. My bank was astute enough to call and ask if I was having marital problems. The level of fear and anger after having been deceived so viciously, when my heart’s desire was to keep my family of six together, was one the most devastating blows. She also shut down our joint checking account. My direct deposit paycheck actually bounced a few days later back to my employer. Her selfishness was no longer something only I could see.” ― Bryan C.

The gift basket

“The last straw came when things were on the rocks and she told her friends. Not too long after, we were at home with our two kids and there was a ring at the door. There was a big basket left at the doorstep. There was a note with some beers and some gifts. My daughter, who was 8 at the time, picked up the note and started reading it. I looked over her shoulder and saw the note was signed by “The Bitches.” It was from her friends, I don’t remember exactly what the note said. It had some words of encouragement to her and a dig at me. They knew I was home with her and our kids. It was right at dinner time. It was totally calculated. They wanted me to see it. At a time when our family was teetering, it could not have come at a worse time. Plus, my kids were unaware of the real situation going on with their parents.

What got me the most was her reaction to the fact that our daughter just read this note. My ex-said, ‘Well, now our daughter now knows what it’s like to have good friends’ and smiled. She loved it. That is when I knew for sure she was done with our marriage.” ― Mark P.

7 Things Therapists Always Do During A Bad Mental Health Day

On a bad mental health day, you shouldn't hold yourself to the same level you do on a good day.

On a bad mental health day, you shouldn’t hold yourself to the same level you do on a good day.

If you’re human, it’s simply impossible to go through life with no bad mental health days. Whether coping with a negative experience, dealing with a life change or just waking up in a low mood, not feeling 100% mentally or emotionally is just a part of life.

Exactly what a bad mental health day looks like will vary from person to person — some folks may feel scattered or stressed while others feel low energy and tired. No matter what one of those rough days feels like for you, it’s safe to say it’s unpleasant. And you certainly don’t want to do anything to make your hard day any worse.

Even therapists have these days ― and there are certain things they personally do to care for themselves when they happen. Read on for their advice:

1. They make sure their physical needs are met.

“I generally start by taking an inventory of where my physical needs are and if they’ve been met or not that day,” said Em Evans, a therapist and co-founder of The Understory Group in Pennsylvania.

This can mean making a literal list of physical needs, Evans said — “Did I take my medication? Am I drinking enough water? Have I gotten enough sleep? Have I eaten an appropriate amount of food for that point in the day? Have I moved my body in a way that makes me feel good?”

Evans added that a lot of times when she’s dealing with a bad mental health day, “I don’t notice that my physical needs have fallen behind and that can really perpetuate the cycle.” Meaning, if you’re not fueling your body with food, water and other necessities, you won’t be doing any favors for your mental (or physical) health.

2. They reschedule the things they don’t need to get done.

When you’re having a tough day, it’s a good idea not to put any additional pressure on yourself — who wants to be met with a lengthy to-do list when it’s tough to even get out of bed?

Nat Adey, a therapist and the other co-founder of The Understory Group in Pennsylvania, said on bad mental health days it can be helpful to assess what needs to get done today and what can be pushed to later in the week.

“Because, sometimes, being productive is just a layer of stress that we don’t need,” Adey said.

“I also remind myself to give myself grace,” said Payal Patel, a licensed marriage and family therapist who works with clients in North Carolina and New Jersey. “And that things will get done when I’m feeling better.”

So, yes, the vacuuming can happen tomorrow. That pesky errand can wait until the weekend. That ongoing work project likely isn’t going to collapse if you hold out a few more days until you’re in a better headspace.

3. They avoid making big decisions.

“I personally try to avoid making any big decision, whether it’s planning a trip with somebody or making a big medical decision,” Adey said. “If I’m not in the right headspace, I’m not going to be making any decision that could impact my life for the permanent future or just foreseeable future.”

Think about it: If you’re not in a good headspace you may end up agreeing to something you don’t really want to do or making a decision out of anxiety and not careful thought.

4. They get outside.

Nature is known to be good for your mental health. Studies show that being in nature can boost happiness and going for a stroll in nature compared to a busy environment can reduce stress.

If possible, Patel said she gets herself outside when she’s feeling down — “a quick walk or even to sit outside for a little bit of time,” she said.

5. They prioritize movement.

It’s well-established that exercise can help you feel less stressed and can help you feel better emotionally, so when you’re not in a great head space getting in some movement could be a good idea.

“I’m a big proponent … of moving my body, and whether that’s just going for a walk or doing some yoga or going for a run and doing something a little bit more intense, I find that movement usually really helps [to set] my day in a different direction,” said Adey.

Even if you can’t motivate yourself to do your regular HIIT class or long run, try a short walk or a gentle stretching class instead. Any kind of movement can help.

6. They connect with other people — and not on social media.

Evans said she tends to isolate when not feeling like her best self, which only makes her feel worse. “And kind of hand in hand in that I try to limit my social media usage as well,” Evans said. “I can get caught up in an endless cycle of scrolling, which just makes me feel kind of zapped and drained.”

“But, in addition to that, when you’re isolating yourself in the real world, and yet, staying on social media for hours … it can give you the illusion that you’re connecting with other people,” Evans added.

Liking someone’s Facebook post isn’t the same as actually sitting down to talk with them about their update. “So I try to make a conscious and intentional effort to go and connect with friends, loved ones,” Evans noted, adding that it’s also helpful for her to be in a physical space with other people, like a park or coffee shop.

“I feel like your bad mental health days really invite you to turn inwards, and for me, at least, it takes conscious and intentional effort to turn and allow myself to connect with other people and maintain the connections that foster my best mental health space. So that’s, that’s kind of where all of my strategies start,” said Evans.

7. They rest.

“During bad mental health days, I focus more on resting as much as I can,” Patel said. This can mean anything from napping to simply lying on the couch to rest her body, she added.

“I won’t force my body to do more than it’s capable of,” stated Patel. And, a hard day, simply moving from your bed to the couch may be all you can handle — and that’s OK.

When you aren’t feeling your best, you shouldn’t expect yourself to be as active as normal. Instead, you should lean into the stillness that can eventually help you build up more energy and do the things that you like to do.

Seth Meyers Sums Up Kristi Noem’s ‘Humiliation Tour’ With Excruciating Supercut

The South Dakota governor “nailed it,” the “Late Night” comedian sarcastically joke.

Seth Meyers on Wednesday summed up South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem’s (R) disastrous promotion of her upcoming memoir as a “humiliation tour.”

Noem’s story about killing her puppy and her disputed claim to have stared down North Korean despot Kim Jong Un have drawn criticism from even conservative quarters.

“Late Night” comedian Meyers aired a montage of Noem swerving around questions from one interviewer after another about whether she actually met Kim. And even though the claim has now been removed from her book, Noem has continued to dodge giving a straight answer.

Noem is now believed to be well and truly out of the race to become Donald Trump’s running mate. But she totally “nailed it” and “put the controversy to bed,” Meyers sarcastically snarked.

She’s “digging a hole so deep she could bury a dog in it,” he added.

BREAKING: Reps halt implementation of cybersecurity levy

The House of Representatives on Thursday directed the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN to halt the implementation of the cybercrime levy in compliance with the provisions of the cybercrime Act.

This followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved by Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, PDP Rivers.

Chinda said section 44 (2a) of the Cybercrime Act listed those to pay the stipulated fees as GSM and telecom companies, Internet providers, Banks and other financial institutions, insurance companies and stock exchange.

The lawmaker explained that the circular from the CBN has raised apprehension across Nigeria, stressing that it has given the impression that the levy is to be paid by Nigerians in an era when they are still battling with an increase in the price of petroleum products, among others.

The House subsequently asked the apex bank to withdraw its earlier circular on implementing the levy immediately and issue another circular in line with the provisions of the Act.

How should the church deal with gossip?

QUESTION

How should the church deal with gossip?

gossip in the church
ANSWER

Gossip is repeating information that should not be repeated, even if it is true. Often, the person who repeats gossip that turns out to be true does it before the truth is substantiated or permission is given to share. What makes news gossip, even if true, is its repetition by or to someone who does not need to know. Gossip might be shared information that was gained in confidence, but it might be information that one has simply “heard” or “overheard.”

The appeal of gossip is that people like to find out secrets and people like to share secrets, especially if the secret is only shared with people who can be “trusted” to keep it. Additionally, when a secret is shared, it may make another person look bad and thus improve the self-image of the gossiper and his audience.

In addition to the many passages in Scripture that warn about the misuse of words and the tongue are passages that warn against gossip specifically:

Proverbs 11:13, “A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.”

Proverbs 20:19, “A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid anyone who talks too much.”

Proverbs 26:20, “Without wood a fire goes out; without a gossip a quarrel dies down.”

In the New Testament, the condemnation of gossip is harsh. In Romans 1:28–30, gossip is one of the sins that signifies mankind’s deepest depravity: “Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents” (emphasis added).

Paul lists gossip as one of the sins he fears that he will find in the church in Corinth: “I fear that there may be discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder” (2 Corinthians 12:20, emphasis added).

Gossip causes division within the church, and it should be addressed.

In Matthew 18:15–17, Jesus explains how sin should be dealt with in the church: “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.”

When a person gossips, he or she needs to be confronted according to the pattern Jesus laid down.

Sometimes it may be difficult to recognize gossip, or it may be couched in such a way as to hide its true nature. It may appear to be motivated by genuine concern: “I heard that Frank and his wife are about to split up. I am really concerned. Have you heard anything about that?” It could be couched as a prayer request: “Please pray for Frank and his wife. I hear they are really having problems.” In these cases, the gossip is spreading information that he or she does not have Frank’s permission to share, even if it is true.

In these cases, the one who hears the gossip must respond properly. It would be helpful if the church had specific teaching from the pulpit on these scenarios.

When a church member hears something like the above illustration, he or she should first refuse to listen and direct the gossip back to the source. For instance, when the gossip says, “Have you heard that Frank and his wife having trouble?” the other party might respond, “No, I haven’t, and I don’t want to hear it. You should not be repeating things about Frank that may or may not be true. If you have genuine concern about Frank’s marriage, you need to go talk to him and see if he needs help.” If there really is concern for Frank and his wife, then the “concerned person” will follow up with Frank, and if the only motivation was gossip, perhaps this response will nip it. If the person persists in gossip, the steps in Matthew 18:15–17 should be followed.

When we hear a potentially gossipy prayer request, it would be appropriate to ask some questions: “Did Frank tell you this?” “No—then how do know it is true?” “Yes—then did he tell you to let other people know and ask them to pray for him?”

The point is to challenge the gossip, refuse to engage the story, and to redirect the gossip’s concern into more productive activity. Before anyone talks about Frank, he or she should speak with him directly to determine the facts, what assistance he might need, and whether it is appropriate to tell others.

The person who hears the gossip cannot—must not—repeat it. That person has only two options in response to the information that was communicated. The first is to simply let it go, and the second is to go to the source (Frank in this case) and try to ascertain the facts (assuming that this person has a relationship with Frank and that such an approach would be warranted.)

There may be occasions when a person is genuinely concerned and goes to a pastor or mature Christian to get help in formulating a proper response to something he or she has seen or heard. In this case, it might not be gossip, but it could easily turn into it. “Pastor, I am concerned about Frank’s marriage. I have heard some things, and I fear they may be true. What should I do?” Here the pastor or mature believer should certainly caution against gossip, impress the fact that this information should not be repeated again, and then encourage the “concerned” party to talk to Frank. If there is not an adequate relationship with Frank, then perhaps it would be appropriate for the pastor or mature Christian to “take over” and go to Frank himself.

When it comes to gossip (or potential gossip), the appropriate response is to confront the one repeating gossip, refuse to listen, and, if it is too late for that, refuse to repeat it. If some action seems to be warranted, then the information must be confirmed with a person in a position to know and give permission to share it. If these steps were followed in every case, much that should not be repeated would be kept quiet, and a person who really does need help would likely receive it.
