Customs hands over confiscated fake US dollars, drones to EFCC, Army

The Murtala Muhammed International Airport Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, in Ikeja, Lagos, on Thursday, handed over fake $1.2 million notes and five cryptocurrency machines to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The Command also handed over 148 pieces of Unmanned Area Vehicles also known as drones, 112 military hardwares and accessories, two bullet proof helmets and two Army vests to the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army in Lagos.

It was reported that the counterfeited foreign currencies were handed over to the EFCC’s Assistant Commander, Oguzi Moses, while the UAVs and other military hardwares were handed over to the General Officer Commanding, GOC, 81 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Muhammad Usman.

The Command’s Customs Area Controller, Compt. Charles Orbih, said the handing over of the seized items was in line with the directive of the Comptroller General of NCS, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.

According to him, the importers of the UAVs could not provide End-User Certificate from the Office of the National Security Adviser.

Speaking after receiving the UAVs and other military hardwares, the GOC, 81 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Muhammed Usman, said the gesture has further strengthened inter-agency collaboration between Customs and the Nigerian Army.

“I thank compt. Orbih for his excellent effort and on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, who sent me here to receive these items, I thank the Customs CG.

“By the time we hand over the drones to experts in the Army, we will know more of what damage it can do if they were in the wrong hands.

“If it can be equipped with ammunition and can be in the air for three days, then it was brought in for a mischievous purpose.

“However, this will foster relationship between the two organisations and we are happy these equipment are in the hand of the authorities, not criminals,” he said.

Amaju Pinnick Backs Finidi George To Get Foreign Assistant Coach

2 mn read

Former president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick has backed the new coach of the Super Eagles, Finidi George, to source for his assistant coaches.

Finidi George was named the head coach of the Super Eagles over a week ago but he is yet to get his assistant coaches.

There are reports that the NFF tried to make Finidi accept his former teammates, Emmanuel Amuneke and Daniel Amokachi, as his assistant coaches, but the Port Harcourt-born tactician allegedly rejected the offer.

The 53-year-old Enyimba coach is reportedly making efforts to have foreign assistant coaches but the NFF is reportedly not interested in the idea due to lack of funds to maintain expatriates.

Amaju Pinnick, who is now a member of the FIFA committee, stressed that Finidi George should be given the free will to select his assistant coaches.

Pinnick, however, noted that if the NFF has no money to fund the request of Finidi, the football federation should have a meeting with the coach over a way forward.

“For his assistants, it is very tricky. It is normal for him to demand foreign assistants if he so desires. Bonfrere Jo was a foreign assistant to Westerhof and later took over the job. Oliseh had a foreign assistant, and Siasia had a foreign assistant. It is not new and it is not also bad for him to demand the same,” Pinnick told Arise TV.

“Finidi is well equipped; he played for Ajax and they over there have developmental football mentoring in kicking the ball, trapping and all that. I think he is well-positioned for the job.

“Amuneke, is also technically sound, but I am talking of the seamless transition from Peseiro; it will benefit the team much for Finidi to have the job and thank God he is there.

“Backroom staffing is more scientific right now. If he says he needs three backroom assistants, perhaps one for goalkeeper training, the others are for other positions.

“The assistant coaches are the engine room of the success of any coach because they see what the coach can’t see.

“But then, it depends on funding from the federation, but I think it is not out of place. Finidi should be allowed to do what he wants to do. But if there is a paucity of funds, they can discuss it with him.”

Note that Finidi George and his Super Eagles players will be in action in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa on June 3, and against Benin Republic on June 10.

S/Court Judgment: Nasarawa Authorities Sends 38 Protesters

A former Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Christopher Oluchukwu, has been convicted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for his role in an employment scam.

According to the case brought forth by the ICPC at Katsina State High Court 3, the defendant was alleged to have received amounts totaling N200,000, N300,000, and N400,000 from three individuals, falsely promising to secure NSCDC jobs for their children.

In a statement signed by Demola Bakare, Acting Director of Public Enlightenment and Education, the ICPC disclosed that the victims reported the incident to the commission after the defendant failed to deliver on the promised job and refused to return their money.

In the course of the trial, counsel for the ICPC, Ibrahim Garba, presented a 9-count charge to the court, outlining how the defendant’s actions violated sections 8, 10, and 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000.

One of the counts read, “That you Christopher Oluchukwu Ugwubujo on or about 25th and 28th day of November, 2014 within the jurisdiction of this court while being a public officer with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) conferred corrupt advantage upon yourself by obtaining a total sum of four hundred thousand naira (N400,000. 00) from one…for a job placement for her daughter into the NSCDC and you thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000.”

Justice Abbas Bawale, in his ruling on Tuesday, convicted Oluchukwu on all nine counts and issued a five-year imprisonment sentence, with no opportunity for a fine.

Flood: Red Cross begins sensitization of Anambra riverine communities

Anambra State chapter of Nigerian Red Cross Society said it has commenced sensitization of indigenes of the state residing in riverine areas in a bid to forestall flood disasters.

The state chairman of the society, Professor Charity Ifeyinwa Emelie stated this during a press conference to mark this year’s World Red Cross Day.

Emelie while addressing journalists said: “We have commenced sensitization of people living in riverine areas on impending flood this year.

“We sent our officials to riverine places, and you know that our people don’t like living their homes, but we have been persuading them to move to upland places to avoid any disaster during this year’s flood.

“Our people in those areas are predominantly farmers and it is difficult to convince them to leave. We have however been sensitizing them, we also tell them that they can consider travelling to be with relatives when the flood set in.”

Emelie added that the organisation has achieved a lot in flood prone areas like Ogbaru, Anambra East, Anambra West, Ayamelum, Awka North and other parts of the state.

“We usually assess the situations, danger and level of vulnerability within the flood prone communities.

“Apart from sharing food items, Red Cross also distributed non food items like hygiene kits, farmer’s kits, and shelter kits to thousands of affected people the areas mentioned.

“Distribution of raw cash was also involved in an instance when Red Cross distributed N61,000.00 to 1,500 Households affected by flood.

“Apart from these, such communities benefitted from free first aide training, first aid kits to schools, stakeholders and partners as well as non consumable clinical materials to 11 selected health centres.”

This Is A Disregard For Tinubu’s Call For Peace’ – Pro-Fubara APC Members Counter Call For Impeachment

'I Will Not Bend To Govern Rivers State' - Fubara Declares

Some members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, under the aegis of the Solidarity and Development Forum in Rivers State, have countered calls for Governor Siminalayi Fubara‘s impeachment.

Recall that the APC state chairman, Tony Okocha, directed the Rivers State House of Assembly on Tuesday to immediately commence proceedings to impeach Fubara.

The latest development follows the political crisis rocking the state amidst the face-off between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

Naija News reports that the APC members, who are believed to be Fubara’s loyalists in the state, in a statement signed by its conveners, Kabir Matazu and Igwe Ude-Umanta, described the call for the Governor’s impeachment as “reckless and irresponsible.”

The group noted that the renewed crisis in the state was no longer needed, stressing that President Bola Tinubu had settled the matter.

The APC members frowned at Tony Okocha’s unguided utterance toward Fubara, stating that it showed a disregard for Tinubu’s call for peace and threatened to destabilize the government and create chaos in the state.

The statement added, “The President himself, in his wisdom, has called for all parties involved in the disagreement to maintain the status quo and work towards a peaceful resolution.

“Governor Fubara has heeded this call and has demonstrated his commitment to the vision of inclusivity and good governance that our dear president has upheld since assuming office.

“It will be unfair, and unwise for any party member, or individual not to resonate in the same frequency as our president.

“It is very disheartening to witness Chief Tony Okocha’s unguided utterances, which not only disregard the president’s call for peace but also pose a threat to the stability and progress of our beloved party.”

11 Injured As Boeing Plane Skids Off Runway In Senegal

A Boeing 737/300-passenger aircraft operating under Air Senegal, chartered by the privately-owned Transair, veered off the runway during an early morning takeoff in Senegal, injuring 11 people and leading to the temporary closure of the international airport near Dakar.

Naija News reports that the incident occurred around 1 am (0100 GMT) Thursday, disrupting operations for nearly 12 hours.

The aircraft, destined for Bamako, Mali, was carrying 78 passengers when it failed to successfully take off at Blaise Diagne International Airport, located 50 kilometres from Dakar.

According to airport management group LAS, which includes Turkish firms Limak and Summa and the publicly owned airport operator AIBD, four of the injured passengers sustained serious injuries, while six others required medical check-ups within the airport facilities.

In response to the accident, the airport’s emergency plan was promptly activated, facilitating the evacuation and immediate care of passengers.

“All the airport emergency services have been mobilized for the evacuation of passengers and their care, as per the plan,” stated a representative from LAS.

The aircraft was subsequently immobilized away from the runway, and images circulating online showed significant damage to the left engine and wing, which was covered in firefighting foam.

The airport confirmed that operations resumed normally shortly after midday.

The LAS group announced, “We inform you that Blaise Diagne International Airport has reopened. Airport operations have resumed as normal.”

Authorities have initiated an investigation to ascertain the precise cause of the incident.

Aviation specialists, along with airline representatives, are currently examining the airline log data and interviewing crew members to determine why the aircraft departed from the runway.

This incident adds to a challenging period for Air Senegal, which has faced ongoing criticism over delays affecting both domestic and international flights.

The airline commenced operations in May 2018 following the collapse of Senegal Airlines in 2016 and aims to transform Dakar into a regional air hub, leveraging the newly inaugurated airport facilities.

Established in 2010 and based at Blaise Diagne International Airport, Transair serves several destinations across West Africa and transports approximately 90,000 passengers annually.

This event follows closely on the heels of another incident involving a Boeing aircraft. A FedEx Boeing 767 cargo plane landed at Istanbul airport without its front landing gear, as reported by the US Federal Aviation Administration, although no injuries occurred in that instance.

Minimum Wage: ‘If Subsidy Was Not Removed, We Would Have Suggested ₦80,000 – NLC Boss Ajaero

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) national president, Joe Ajaero, has explained why they proposed ₦615,000 as the minimum wage to the federal government.

According to Ajaero, the union would have probably suggested ₦80,000 if the fuel subsidy was not removed.

Naija News recalls that the NLC President noted that governors can afford to pay the proposed ₦615,000 minimum wage if they get their priorities right.

During a courtesy visit to The Nation headquarters in Lagos on Thursday, May 9, Ajaero emphasized that the proposal to the government was influenced by the economic realities in the country.

He said though there were misconceptions about the proposal, the NLC arrived at the figure to make lives better for the workers.

Ajaero stated: “There are misconceptions about the proposed ₦615, 000, but we don’t have choice and if we are asked to represent it today it will increase. The tarrif was not there when we made the proposal but things are hard now.

“We looked at food, medicals, education, and other utilities. We didn’t make provision for communication, offering and the likes. Those are some of the things we took into cognisance before we arrived at ₦615,000.

“We think it is better for us to explain to Nigerians for them to understand us better. The removal of subsidy also affected everything. Probably, if the subsidy was not removed, we would have suggested ₦80,000.”

NPFL Plans To Enforce New Minimum Wage For Footballers

< 1 mn read

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is planning to increase the minimum wage of players in the league due to economic hardship across the country.

Reports claimed that players in the NPFL earn nothing less than N150,000 and above depending on their status and the nature of the club they play for.

This means that the lowest earner in the professional football league earns about 105.75 dollars per month (based on March 9, 2024 exchange rate) which is not close to what the lowest paid in the English Premier League earns per week.

NPFL Chairman, Gbenga Elegbeleye said in a statement that the said amount which is the league’s minimum wage should be increased to a yet-to-be-disclosed amount.

He said the economic hardship across Nigeria has made such a salary benchmark insufficient for professional footballers in the country.

“The last NPFL players can earn is N150,000, by next season, we will upgrade it because even N150,000, we discovered that some clubs are paying below it. Some players accept it just to join such clubs,” the NPFL chairman said.

“That is why compiling your account now is part of our clubs’ licensing.

“We want to see where and what you are paying each player and it has to be through banks.”

Hardship: Over 31 Million Nigerians Will Face Severe Food Crisis From June – Report

Igboho: Northern Group Threatens To Stop Supplying Food To The South

A troubling report from the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and its partners forecasts that approximately 16 per cent of Nigerians (32 million people) will grapple with severe food insecurity between June and August 2024.

Naija  News reports that the study signals an escalating crisis in hunger and deteriorating living conditions not only in Nigeria but across West and Central Africa.

The report indicates an increase from last year’s figures, with the 2024 projection showing a concerning rise in food insecurity during what is traditionally known as the lean season.

The report read, “Looking ahead, the projected outlook for the period June-August 2024 appears even more severe: nearly 52 million people across the 17 analyzed countries are anticipated to face phases 3 to 5 during the lean season of June-August. This translates to 12% of the analyzed population struggling to meet their basic food and nutrition requirements.

“These countries include Mauritania (656 652, 14%), Burkina Faso (2 734 196, 12%), Niger (3 436,892, 13%), Chad (3,364,453, 20%), Sierra Leone (1,569,895, 20%), and Nigeria (31,758,164, 16%).”

A staggering 52 million people across the region are expected to face acute hunger during this period, constituting about 12% of the population analyzed.

For Nigeria specifically, the figures are even more dire, with an estimated 32 million people facing crisis-level or emergency food insecurity conditions.

The situation is particularly critical in the northern states of Sokoto and Zamfara, where over 15% of children are reported to be suffering from acute malnutrition, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis.

The report also highlights that several other countries within the region are expected to suffer significant food security challenges.

These include Chad, where 20% of the population could face severe food shortages, and Sierra Leone, which shows similar percentages. Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and Niger are also on the list of nations facing daunting food security challenges.

The IRC has attributed the rising severity of food insecurity across the Sahelian belt to a combination of factors, including increased insecurity, adverse effects of climate change, and deteriorating macroeconomic conditions marked by high inflation rates.

In January 2024, the average inflation rate in the region was recorded at 21%, up from 18% in the previous year. Sierra Leone, in particular, has experienced a dramatic increase, with inflation rates soaring to 54%.

Ayra Starr dodges shady question about Cardi B, American rapper responds

Cardi B said that the reporter was trying to be messy.

The Tmz reporter asked if Cardi B was disrespectful for forgetting her designer's name at the Met Gala. Ayra Starr dodged the question

In a new viral video on X, Ayra Starr was stopped by a TMZ reporter who asked her about Cardi B forgetting the name of the designer of her 2024 Met Gala outfit on the red carpet.

“So Cardi B just went after the former Vogue director Gilbert. The dress that she wore to the Met Gala took months to make and she didn’t remember the name of the designers who made the dress,” the reporter said.

Starr immediately interjected, highlighting how nerves could be the reason. “It happens sometimes because of the nerves,” she said.

However, the reporter probed further saying, “She said she was supposed to stand and pose on the podium and that there was a lot going on. But you’ve been on a lot of red carpets, is it disrespectful not to know the designer’s name?”

The singer then laughed, raised her hands in defeat and said, “I don’t know to be honest but I feel like nerves would definitely make you forget. Love to Cardi B though, always. So I don’t know.”

Cardi B responded to the clip on X, supporting Ayra Star and stressing that the media outlet was trying to be shady.

Her reply read, “Ahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa try to be messy and mission failed…also why put a superstar like Ayra in such a weird and uncomfortable position?”

This comes after the rapper was criticised for forgetting the name of the designer who made her dress, Sensen Lii, and calling him “Asian.” During the heat of the backlash, a former director at Vogue called her out for calling her designer Asian, highlighting that Sensen Lii was Chinese.

Cardi B then made a video to explain what happened, stressing that she was not trying to be racist. “I kind of forgot how to pronounce the designer’s name because his name is a little bit complicated…My mind was just racing,” she said.
